Hey, I'm Eddie! I'm a Software Engineer, I specialise in Build Engineering. I've worked in games for 5+ years. Originally in QA (Early 2017), before switching to Code in Late 2020. This feed is mostly Games, Music, Photography and F1. I ramble a lot so you've been warned 😅
I get the point of this tweet, I really do.
But oh boy does it remind me how little people know about game dev.
As a starting point, having 300 creators play a week before and then expect everything to be fixed, QA'd and certified by first party in 5 working days is mental.
Dear
@CallofDuty
,
You seemingly don't understand how to make your Warzone fanbase happy. Here's a thread to help:
📉 Fix Your Awful Servers:
Fortnite rarely has any sort of problems with their servers, even though they constantly have more players online. "Desync" shouldn't be
Games industry friends. I've got a couple of questions.
How long have you been in the industry?
How long did It take for you to get into the industry?
Do you have a degree?
I'll start:
Been in the industry 3 years (From March)
2 Years to join (Without a degree)
#gamedev
I'd say >95% of issues have been discussed or raised internally.
A crash fix can take weeks.
Optimisation can take months.
Balance changes have an impact on more than the thing you're tweaking.
Level design changes require design, art, testing etc...
@O2
The number of people asking for compensation for this outage is fucking stupid. Yes, phone contacts are expensive. Yes outages are a pain. But my god O2 isn't to blame if it's a 3rd party supplier. Also, it's once in how long? I've not had problems with o2 for years.
Even if every issue raised by content creators was fixed, verified and certified in 5 days.
I can guarantee at least 5 new issues will have been introduced.
Maybe a fix for a crash impacted the save game logic and now you're saves are corrupt because it was rushed out.
I have not reached the end of the game, but saw this in a video on YouTube.
I was lucky enough to work with Matt White at both Criterion and for a brief amount of time at Rocksteady.
He is greatly missed by many and was fantastic at his work.
I guess I should share what I'm doing next.....
Excited to be joining the Splash Damage team tomorrow. I've dreamt of being a programmer for a while but thought it wouldn't be possible as I didn't have a degree.... Dreams can become a reality.
For those that are annoyed about cosmetics in Battlefield.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THEM. Sure you might unlock it, or purchase them (Assuming MTX Skins arrive at some point) but really... what's wrong with having cosmetics, you don't need to use them.
They look dope.
Today is an incredibly rough day for the video games industry.
Embracer invested heavily in a lot of studios which otherwise would not be around today, leading them to what is perceived as safety.
The impact this has is potentially going to be huge.
we are learning that Halo devs tried to pitch a variety of fun Halo games including a Helldivers-like concept and it’s painful.
speaking from personal experience, nothing is more frustrating to see someone else succeed on your very good idea your company rejected
Props to
@RocksteadyGames
for including folk who have left the studio but keeping them in the credits for
@suicidesquadRS
<3
The proper way of doing things, that not every studio does.
Okay, now BF 2042 is out for everyone, what Top 5 maps do you want next in
#BF2042
#Portal
?
Personally, I'd love to see:
Flood Zone - BF4
Operation Metro - BF4 Version
Nebandan Flats - BF3
Damavand Peak - BF3
Lost Islands - BF4
This thread has done exactly what I wanted to do.
Nobody has the same route.
The industry doesn't require a degree, even though it sometimes feels like it.
It can take days to years to get in. It's all about time, place and in most cases luck.
I recently announced to the team at Rocksteady that I'm going to be leaving. I've loved my time at the studio, however, I've decided that I want a new challenge. Outside of QA. I'll be starting at a different studio in a new role for me in mid November....
Guess I should share what I'm doing next...
I am levelling up from Associate Automation Engineer at Splash Damage to a fully-fledged Build Engineer at Sharkmob.
I'll be rejoining a few folks from EA, Rocksteady and Splash Damage so it'll be good to work with new and old faces
@bacca805897251
1000%, sadly, I don't see constructive feedback being provided on Twitter because it's not the best place for it - And most people struggle with making things constructive when they're upset or angry, I know I'm guilty of that myself. I do see why content creators do it too
100% This.
If you think a "New Engine" is a NEW Engine. You have been fooled.
Most of the time it's an evolved version of the old Engines.
UE5 has UE3 Code (At least!) floating about in it.
Time to burst some of y’alls bubbles.
Destiny 2’s technical issues won’t magically disappear or be solved when they make a Destiny 3.
A new Engine won’t magically solve all the “issues”.
Destiny is an incredibly complex game and with that comes the risk of bugs-
So after 4.5 Years in QA (In both Games and Software) and 18 months at Rocksteady (An awesome team BTW) today is my last day. In just over a week I'll be starting a completely brand new adventure outside of QA. I wish everyone in the Rocksteady family the best ❤️
My fitness journey begins today. I want to loose 5 stone. There is a gym in my block and a course led place opposite. Trying boxing tonight. I'm excited.
@MitchyD
We just need to push a button and it does things for us instantly. Don't worry about the lead time for booking audio booths, mocap and actors schedules etc. Just do it in the morning at 10am.
Hey
@geoffkeighley
we can all see you are clearly online enough this week to understand memes because you liked a tweet about the Willy Wonka Experience.
Sooooooooooooo are you going to comment on the layoffs that you supposedly care about so much????
#BoycottTheGameAwards
I can not overstate how expensive and risky creating a new IP in AA/AAA is, it's why we get so many sequels and variations of things.
Most get cancelled before they release, even new franchises based on 3rd party IP are risky.
It's also why a lot of new IP's look at GamePass
Gave Hazard Zone a shot again today, not played since launch.
It's a real shame that DICE bailed on the mode. It *could* be rather interesting... It just... needs a bit of work.
Incredibly frustrating after the same fate with Firestorm, both would have benefited from F2P IMHO
There appears to be two companies with the same name... Not confusing at all for
@TheHIVE_Social
(Note, difference vs @/hivesocialapp)
One is considered good - The other bad.
Hey. I'm Eddie. I work as a Quality Analyst (DevQA) at Criterion Games (EA). I've worked in game development since March 2017. I shipped Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Burnout Paradise Remastered. Now I'm working on secret stuff. I love automation and tooling.
#MeetTheDev
#GameDev
@gamespot
Who the fuck comes up with these titles? "There's actually an update for Star Wars Battlefront II" you know the game that's been updated regularly since launch.... Talk about clickbait.
To put something into perspective RE Testing & Bugs in games.
If 20 people tested a game for 4 years. And an additional 300 people tested the game for 1 year. You are looking at 684,000 hours of testing. That's without a single meeting, day off or anything.....
The fact that matchmaking for Firestorm, Solo mode takes 5 minutes and you don't get a server is so sad :(
We poured so much love into that!
I'd love to have had one last hoora. Miss that team quite a lot!
Soo....
A bit of personal news.
I'm leaving the amazing team at
@CriterionGames
on Friday. I've loved every second with them. But I decided I wanted a new challenge.
I'll have news about where I'm going once I know I can talk about it.
(1/2)
Okay, impressions of COD: MW Open Beta.
- Visuals look like older COD's even with engine upgrade IMHO.
- Reminds me of BF3 (Ground War/UI esp when downed)
- BFV weapons feel sooo much better than COD: MW.
- BFV Core gameplay, esp movement is much better.
- Tanks feel cheap.
@kfcgaming
Brands really need to stop trying to be "Edgy", at least be educated on the topic before doing shit like this. You are gonna cause more problems than good, just for "the numbers".
Westie hits the nail on the head. I've played more of the 2042 BETA than I have any previous BETA (I think) and while I said I'd just play a couple of hours, to get a general feel for the game, I keep on going back. I can't stop. I've not felt that in a game for a LONG time....
Battlefield 2042 is DICE's answer to Battlefield 4: a game that people play for 6 years after the last content update.
Battlefield 1 didn't have staying power even though it was a atmospheric trip. Battlefield V... let's not go there.
Battlefield 2042 is the next Battlefield 4.
@GoneEFK
And... that's a recruiter + company I will not be working with... Ever. Thanks for the vis - I've removed them from my network and reported the comment.
Sorry to see you experienced this :(
Gotta feel sorry for CDPR Devs. They worked tirelessly on CP77 and because of *waves hands* reasons *waves hands* it couldn't get the time it needed in the oven. Now the devs are going to be left with a mark against there name for something they had no control over.
Just watched
@MrProWestie
's video about Firestorm. Criterion poured a lot of love into the mode. It's a real shame to see it not supported much anymore. But glad to see some people can play still.....
@tomwarren
Windows Phone is honestly, the best mobile OS I've used. Just wish 3rd party support was decent. I'd still be using it if it was still supported.
Sadly, today I said goodbye to my grandad. I'm remembering the memories of going to model railway exhibitions many years ago with both of my grandads & my dad, the visits to Stratford, Didcot, Oxford and Windsor. You'll be missed <3
I'm intrigued by this because of the recent survey results from GDC (IIRC) about the status of the industry. Obviously that's a select collection of people. Twitter seemed like a way to get another set of results.
Can we take a second to appreciate how
@SimonWhistler
runs 10 YouTube channels + a beard grooming website. All of which are doing very well. I couldn't even handle two YouTube channels with regular uploads, let alone 10...
Hey! I'm Eddie, joining in on the
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
trend.
Been working in games for 5 years now, at Criterion & Rocksteady in QA. Now at Splash Damage as a Build/Tools Software Engineer.
I'm Bi, Autistic and based in Southern England. Didn't do well at GCSE's or do uni.
