It’s my birthday! 50!!! I thought it was a number that was so far away but as we say, the young shall grow! This young one has grown and I’m eternally grateful to God for my journey. The ups, the downs and the uncertainties 😉
I just want to thank everyone who’s been part of it.

This is how to self regulate and just do the good thing.
You don’t have to be a racist to be racist. Let that sink in.
While our actions & ideas can be racist, racism is a system. It operates because we’ve set up structures, laws and policies that covertly promotes one group & their ways as superior over others.

This was the final straw for me. I felt so helpless as I saw the people we rely on to serve & protect, stand by & allow vandalism in the name of eviction. The tenant knew his rights; he asked to see the notice of eviction, it made no difference. Experience reconstructs identities
"I've told you already, it's not my responsibility if you're homeless" says the Garda to one of the 9 tenants illegally evicted last night in Phibsboro.
It is, however, their responsibility to oversee the eviction apparently. (No, it's not)
Black Studies & CRT perspectives in education. UCD undergrad offering. Excited to be the module coordinator for the first ever Black Studies focused module in Ireland. Just 5 credits but it’s a start. Come on Ireland, let’s catch up with what’s happening in academia in the world
I taught a Black History session to primary aged girls, one asked about my goals as a child. I stated my truth; as a young Black girl, I always wanted to write a book. Yay, It’s done! It's important for younger women to see someone who represents them & b encouraged to think big
Changing the reference from slaves to enslaved; from explorers to exploiters; from slave trade to human trafficking and genocide of African people will begin to decolonise the narrative. These are some basic changes I teach in Black Studies.
Slaves did not come from Africa. People were captured in Africa and enslaved. Don't let other people frame your historical reference for you. Especially the descendants of the people who enslaved you.

I can understand Noel Grealish being a bigot! What I don’t get is how a room full of “welcoming” “non-racist” Irish audience listened to that racist race baiting rant and burst into rapturous applause. Is that an indication of the ‘hidden’ numbers who think like him in that room?

Don’t ask Blacks to teach you about how your knee feels on Black necks. You do the work. Inform yourself. Examine your practices & institutions. Don’t hide behind “unconscious bias”. Stay with that uncomfortable feeling. Examine why you’re feeling that way.
Dismantle racism now!
Ireland ranks among worst in EU-wide racism study. We shouldn’t keep hearing this. Let’s act to change it and not keep debating whether there’s racism in Ireland or not. Believe us when we say we’re experiencing racism. Don’t talk us down.

In the whole of Ireland, we don’t have an institute of Black or Africana Studies. I’ve been troubled about this & I’ve been working on it since last year. I’m excited to see it unfolding. More info to come. Dm or email if you have any questions. I have taster sessions in August.

Being racist is not a fixed position. We can be perfectly okay with a Black spouse & mixed race child & extremely racist to their Black mother & friends.
We can be antiracist about migrant doctors & nurses and be very racist against people seeking asylum & Black bank managers.
People of migrant descent do not need state permission to buy a cup of coffee for family members no matter where they live. €17m in remittances to Nigeria is approx €13/Nigerian/wk =5 cups of coffee. Let’s say to Noel Grealish, it’s not a crime to buy coffee for family members!

Dismantling the far-right in Ireland should not be by only one group or set of people. It’s the duty of every citizen, (permanent or passing) who believe in equity and justice for all.
Let today be a lesson to us here in Ireland to work harder to dismantle far-right groups who are actively organising and spreading racist disinformation. Actions like these start somewhere.

The tired tactics of erasing Black participation & contributions in “good” things is ongoing bcos Black excellence doesn’t fit the narrative of Black deficit! This attempt at Black erasure was carried out by people who’ll insist they’re “not racist!” exhausting but Still we rise!
It’s confusing that the very people who don’t want Black people in Ireland, and have been very invested in reducing their numbers want to consume the statues of enslaved Black women. Even trolls saying Blacks out of Ireland want statues of enslaved Black women? Please why? 🤷🏽♀️
Racism; the gift that just keeps on giving. I’m so p***ed off. I need someone who is a critical thinker to have an In conversation with me about my experience as an academic in Irish third level institutions. Too much going on. Too much. Tired and exhausted.

Seriously, everything is wrong with this picture. I’d hate to be the woman/women this room of suits are talking about! How is this still happening in 2020. Worse still, how are these men not saying this is wrong! We shouldn’t be discussing or deciding about women’s bodies/care!😒

When ‘well meaning people’ /trolls say ‘if you don’t like it here, why don’t you leave!’ What’s it implying?

Why Passive bystanders are dangerous to victims of racism. If we leave the person experiencing racism alone with the racist, the victim ends up filled with the shame of racism. Worse still, they have people witnessing their shame. When you speak up, the shame goes to the racist.
