Developer: In this game, you can be the BAD GUY.
Me: Wow! Cool!
Me: *Spares and forgives enemies, refuses to steal, selects friendliest dialogue options*
Developer: This is supposed to be escapist fantasy about violating societal norms.
Me: I am a nice villain
I spent a lot of time staring at an early version of this scene mulling over whether to cut the gag so it didn’t distract from the rest of the scene, or leave it in. It appears my concerns were well founded. But people love it. Sooooo...all’s well that ends well?
It’s certainly something that Larian just released the game of the decade, a sequel to two iconic Bioware games. Meanwhile Bioware just released the writer who wrote Minsc & Boo, and so many other iconic characters in Bioware games. Weird world.
Same thing in Mass Effect 1 when you try to run on the Citadel. No change in speed, just in the FOV of the camera to give the illusion you’re moving faster. Can’t remember if that stayed true for 2 & 3 or if load times were better by then
when one of the DA:I devs admitted that the mounts didnt actually go faster when you sprinted, they just added some wind lines to make it seem like they did
Always a huge morale boost as an artist to see this type of post.
Happy to see it felt more effortless to the player than it was. For the record each one of those games WAS damn hard work, but joyously done. 😉
Except for the massive amounts of crunch. That always sucked.
I love working on a new project, but the sequel is when a team has it's tech, people and processes together and can make they game they REALLY wanted to make the first time around.
Working on Mass Effect 2 hammered that home for me early in my career. Long live the 2nd game!
People are talking about crunch again, and coincidentally today marks 10 years since the Green Chicken crunch dinner incident on Dragon Age 2. Sometimes this is what Devs have to look forward to at 6 p.m. before going back to finish their work for the night. It was magical 😐
I don't think people realize how many black women characters just fall flat at the execution part. The coils at the end of the braids, her beautiful soft features. The subtle style without trying TOO hard. I love her.
Very excited people can finally get a proper look at what we’ve been building for the last few years.
Can’t celebrate too long though, it’s been announced this thing is going to have weekly cinematics! That sounds like a LOT of work for somebody 😉

Damn straight we did. “Wander left/right/forward/back” were probably our most overused staples. We had to have Cin Design team discussions when we used them too much 🤣
remember that time mordin said "someone else might have gotten it wrong" and then hummed a showtune while correcting a generational wrong and I cried for fifteen minutes
remember that
Mine is absolutely Mordin's send off in Mass Effect 3. Specifically, the Renegade "send off." It's a valid choice to make depending on how you feel about certain parties, but damned if I wasn't going to emotionally shank you back for doing that to my boy.
Gamedevs! Something I've noticed: we work hard to make things, then don't give ourselves time to celebrate what we made.
Tell me about a shipped thing you're proud of! ✨
I'll start: Violet + Clementine's romance scene💜🍊 Took many drafts to get there, but it was worth it.
If there is ONE thing that thirteen years of AAA Game Dev has taught me, it's that I will never need to buy another t-shirt in my life.
They will be provided.
@Tuttle_Power
“Jack Bauer in space” was literally the elevator pitch for Mass Effect. So if that’s the experience that came across, the team nailed it!
@DirtyEffinHippy
Hey, the fact you made it through the entire playthrough first means you were more dedicated than almost everybody else who tried it ;)
Over time, teams disperse. Today I work with literally no one I worked with 13 years ago.
Recently though, I did see a distinct pattern of some old Edmonton colleagues start to relocate back there, or sign on to work remotely on a mysterious project.
Just walked past someone receiving delivery from "Outback Steakhouse"
#1
I can't imagine what would make you go Outback, that you couldn't get elsewhere, other than "The Blooming Onion."
#2
I can't imagine what state a Blooming Onion is in after a 20 minute drive to your door.
@DarthBoland
Yup, We also always tried getting them to get attached to characters with opposing needs and make them choose who they loved the most.
Direct conflict between beloved characters is great!
@DirtyEffinHippy
I regret that I did not make the acting/cinematography more awkward. But I'd already spent too much of my time budget on the musical number.

I have a friend looking for a Senior Writer with Bioware type experience. If you feel like you're vaguely in that category (and do give yourself the benefit of the doubt on any hard requirements there) give a shout and I'll pass your name along.
@kolbepayne
To this day we still don't know. Eventually it just got up and walked out of the room. None of us had the guts to even ask it where it was going.

@MonolithDev
Same thing happened with the choice wheel from “Mass Effect”was officially patented, but the choice was made not to enforce the patent. Now everybody uses it.
Also worth remembering that before the reviews were posted...a lot of us internally didn't know where they were going to land.
Project came in hot ya'll and I don't think many of us were expecting the multiple GOTY awards that it received. Glad it did though! :)

Something so surreal about walking into a Star Wars Cantina on Batuu, looking to your left and seeing Cal Kestis just sitting there. Can't get much more Star Wars than that.
A fantastic game I worked on is free this weekend! Escape those self-quarantine blues with a trip around the Ancient Greek isles!
(The environment art is really amazing, just run around in it!)
@ConalPierse
I kid you not, I had an Italian bask in the revelation that was, "The shit has hit the fan" for several minutes.
"That's perfect...it's so evocative."
This place could use some light-heartedness.
I'm starting a new X-com 2 campaign.
Who wants a character named after them? I metagame and save-scum like a degenerate to make the alien invasion seem like a comedy of errors from the alien POV, so all my soldiers survive.
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine I'm downloading "Hades."
If I can't eat a turkey with my family over the next few days maybe I can dethrone a god.
What's the word for petulantly expecting to be overjoyed?
I’ve worked on every Dragon Age released so far. Origins was my introduction to the industry. I’m looking forward to the next one as a fan. I know nothing about it, and that excites me beyond measure. Waiting for that team to knock it out of the paaaaaaaark!

Did I see you Americans are getting a one-time $1200 check to cover COVID unemployment? Because Canada just announced $2000/month for the next four months.
So far I’m really enjoying
#GhostsofTsushima
, it has a lot in common with
#AssassinsCreedOdyssey
! It’s like getting to enjoy the gameplay of a game I worked on while experiencing the story for the first time! And there’s tooooons of cool new stuff we didn’t have!
I gotta say Game Dev Twitter (which is 99.9% of the people who will see this) adding a healthy dose of history/archaeology accounts to my feed has been amazing on a lot of levels. I am a history nerd as well, but I think everybody would benefit from what it brings to the feed.
The rock tombs in Kahramanmaraş, which are thought to belong to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, attract European academics to the region.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is expected to sell 10 million units by March 31st 2020 according to EA.
Beating original expectations of 6-8 million units.
Strong performance for the game solidifies demand for high quality story games.

WHAT?! The floss is a brute drag net that pulls the large pieces of debris out so the brush can come in and clean afterwards. Do you also vacuum your floors and THEN dust the counter tops and shelves you misanthrope?!
First date tonight. Another software developer.
“They want us to launch a UK version of the company website. We’re not prepared for that. What language would it even have to be in? Do they speak English in the UK?”
Even your roughest projects, the ones that fell in the "dear god I'm just happy we managed to ship something at all given the time we were given" box still manage to touch people and leave lasting impressions.
Few benefits of being an artist.
@wlsalyers
You did a fantastic job taking over. I animated and did the cinematography on the bulk of Mordin's scenes over the trilogy and I could hardly tell the difference.
I have a special reason for finding this screenshot choice hilarious.
Originally the level designer just decided Shep stored this unconscious rogue AI in the SAME ROOM as the AI core for the ship. WITH NO SAFEGUARDS! I got the force field cell added to canon and the ship.
Happy anniversary
