Charge Ahead Partnership has issued the following statement on the suspension of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program "Charge Ahead Partnership’s membership includes thousands of fuel retailers across the country, some of whom were participating in the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program that has been halted by the Federal Highway Administration. Below is a statement that can be attributed to Charge Ahead Partnership spokesman Ryan McKinnon: 'In many states, the NEVI program helped jumpstart investment in high-speed EV charging stations, getting high-speed chargers at the gas stations and truck stops where millions of drivers already stop every year. Other states dragged their feet or awarded grants to locations where no one would stop. The EV charging marketplace faced challenges long before NEVI, with unfair competition from electric utilities and poorly thought-out grant programs that led to unattended and broken chargers in odd locations where drivers rarely stop. And while it is clear that NEVI didn’t solve the industry’s challenges, the program was a step in the right direction by prioritizing establishments that would have skin in the game, were making a long-term investment in EV charging, and – most importantly – were in the actual places where drivers would use the chargers. We hope the FHWA takes this opportunity to ensure state NEVI plans are encouraging private investment in EV charging while also being confident that that federal funds are not being wasted.'

Lanny Hartmann, a friend of Charge Ahead Partnership, provided valuable insight on Maryland's utility-owned EV charging experience at a Maryland PSC Administrative Meeting today. He talks about discoveries from his travels around the state, citing examples of utility-owned chargers that are broken and have been for over a year, and chargers that are broken but still display as online on charging locator apps/websites. This is not the experience Maryland's EV drivers deserve and is a prime example of why utilities should leave EV charging to the private market and stick to what they do best, power generation. Watch his testimony below. (timestamp 1:10:20)

The Maryland Public Service Commission is pumping the brakes on a program that enabled four power companies to use ratepayer funds to install chargers at government buildings across the state. "In the coming months, the roughly 5-year-old program will be reevaluated by the commission’s electric vehicle working group to determine what the next steps should be, said Benjamin Baker, a senior commission adviser and leader of the working group. 'It is a ratepayer incentive. It’s not free to put these out there,' Baker said. 'So we want to make sure where they’re going is impactful.'" Read more below.

Charge Ahead Press Director Ryan McKinnon was recently featured in a story discussing the value gas stations add as EV charging purveyors, "We want to replicate the experience of what drivers expect, that means amenities such as a store where they can buy food, have a drink, sit down and relax. … A place that’s open 24 hours with attendants, folks who are there to help if the charger is broken,” McKinnon said. “These are the basic amenities at gas stations that utility-owned chargers don’t offer and it is ultimately slowing EV adoption, because they’re building out the charging network in a way that’s not attractive to non-EV drivers.” Read the full story below.
