@noahqk Fully agree! However, diversifying communities can take decades. The manged transition away from coal in Germany's Ruhr area serves as case: they founded universities, innovation hubs and drew in new industries decades before the last mines were closed.

Our new open access study on the carbon footprint (CF) batteries highlights the importance if raw materials. We tend to underestimate their CF. Check it out!
A cost-based method to assess lithium-ion battery carbon footprints was developed, finding that sourcing nickel and lithium influences emissions more than production location. This aids in designing green industrial policy. @eth_epg

Today on Volts: some clean-energy technologies are on learning curves (rapidly getting cheaper) & some aren't. But...why? What is it about some techs that make them prone to rapid learning, and others not? I discuss the question with two scholars.
