OK, folks. This will be the last Twitter post for awhile. I'm joining the ranks of the unemployed today. Been a privilege to cover so many great people and great athletes for 18 years on the Mavericks' beat. Wish them all the best. I'll resurface in a week or two with an update.
With Rick Carlisle breaking the news at his pregame presser, I can confirm that I am now a Mavericks' employee. While the role is evolving, I'll keep Twittersphere updated about where to find the videos, the Q&As, the podcasts, the words and more that will crank up soon.

Dirk Nowitzki hits a midrange jumper -- the same sort that he's hit thousands of times before -- for his fourth point of the night and the 31,420th of his career, one more than Wilt Chamberlain for sixth on the all-time NBA scoring list.
Weirdest question of the night to Luka: “My wife and I named my dog after you, on a scale of 1 to 10, how cute do you think he is?”
Said Doncic: “I’d say nine, because if I say 10 then my dog will get jealous.”
Dirk Nowitzki will receive a key to the city of Dallas at halftime Wednesday. He will be just the third person to receive a key from Mike Rawlings in his seven years as mayor. The honor commemorates not only Dirk’s achievements on the court but his great work in the community.
Throwing self under bus: My Hou Chron analysis of Mavs' 98 draft:
Grade: F
"They gave up the No. 6 pick and an almost-certain lottery pick next season to get Steve Nash and the German big man. Europeans are such a risky bet, especially in the lottery. So many bust. So few bloom"
NBA TV just announced it will televise the Mavericks' scrimmage Thursday night at 6 p.m. against the Lakers. First semi-real basketball in more than four months for both teams.
Tim Hardaway Jr. says “People, be ready,” in regard to Kristaps Porzingis. Says what they have with KP “is scary, in a good way.” Said he’s never seen KP more motivated.
Steve Kerr was in rare form after the Mavericks' blowout win over his Warriors: "Tough to lose by 48 points," he said. "But a break here or there and it only would have been 42, so that's how we have to look at it." Priceless.
Davis Bertans just made 21 3-pointers in a row while his shooting teammates Dorian Dinney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie tagged along for the victory ride.
Dirk Nowitzki on the investigation of the Mavs: "It’s very disappointing. It’s heartbreaking. I’m glad it’s all coming out. I was disgusted when I read the article, obviously, as everybody was. I was shocked ... that our franchise, my franchise, that stuff like that was going on"
Dwight Powell, at the opening of a new tech center Tuesday, on his future: “There’s no place I’d rather be than Dallas. I’ve done everything to show I love it here. This team gave me my shot…treated me extremely well, as an athlete and man. So, yeah, I love the Dallas Mavericks"
Rick Carlisle: "I just want to go on record saying that I miss
@ESefko
very badly. He is a wonderful man of the highest integrity. It's just one of the sad things that is happening in the media. That's a great man and it was a privilege to work with him for 11 years."
Mavs' Dwight Powell on those who did not kneel for anthem: "That speaks to the greatness of this country. Even if they may seem like outliers, it’s important for them to be able to speak their minds. That’s important for us as a league and a country, to have that freedom.”
Biggest wingspans at the NBA combine this year.
1. Mo Bamba (Texas) (7'10)
2. Udoka Azubuike (7'7)
3. Jaren Jackson (7'5.25)
T-4. Isaac Haas / Austin Wiley (7'5)
6. Ray Spalding (7'4.75)
7. Wendell Carter (7'4.5)
8. Bruno Fernando (7'4.25)
9. Kevin Hervey (UT-Arlington) (7'3.5)
Luka Doncic has the right idea. Throwback the All-Star Game to the way it was.
“I don't think so," he said when asked if he liked World vs. USA. "I think it should go back to the West and the East. That’s what I like. That’s the format I think should happen again."
Dirk Nowitzki on what a one-on-one match against Luka Doncic would go like? “He’s got a lot of moves in the one-on-one games. He’s got a lot of shots in his repertoire. I’d probably go with him now. But back in the days? No chance, no chance.”
The Dirk shrine, where he threw the trash can that made this hole in the wall, will be cut out and moved to Golden State’s new arena next season, a Warrior official said.
Mavericks' Jalen Brunson added to the 13-manb USA Select team that will train against the U.S. Men's team in early August in Las Vegas. Trae Young, De'Aaron Fox, Marvin Bagley III and Jarrett Allen also on the team, among others.
Dorian Finney-Smith turns 29 today. Said he was serenaded before shootaround by the lone Maverick rookie Moses Wright. Said DFS: "Moses sang it. And he sang it with love.”
Jason Kidd on Luka, comparing his calf to Dirk's playoff knee in 2003: "That time is coming that we’re going to have to make that decision, either way . . . Do you play him or not? And we’ve gone through this once before. And we’re going to be right back in that seat again.”
Gotta love Dirk Nowitzki. On if he can tell which teams are trying now, he said: "“Yeah, it’s pretty obvious. There obviously are some teams that are going for some losses. We're one that still wants to win." As for any ideas of tanking? "Well, I think Mark messed that up for us"
Clearly, the acquisition of Luka Doncic means the Mavericks have either DeMarcus Cousins, Clint Capela or some other big man on their radar in free agency.
Many reports now saying Ryan Broekhoff is the player who will be waived to make room for Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. That's a tough one for one of the truly good guys (and solid players) you'll ever meet.
Gregg Popovich hates 3-pointers: "It’s not real basketball. Let’s have a 4-point shot. Or a 5-point shot and make it really fun for the fans. Let’s make it a circus" When asked if game would be OK without a 3-pt. shot, he said: "What am I? You want me to cure cancer, too?"
Dirk Nowitzki hecks out at 7:23, hugs Rick Carlisle and high-fives pretty much anybody within his long arm's reach. Mission accomplished by moving up to No. 6 on the all-time scoring list.
Dirk Nowitzki on the Mavericks' lack of success the past three seasons:
“33-24-33 sounds good if you’re talking about some things, but not wins. We’ve got a lot to be optimistic about, but there’s an amazing amount of work that needs to happen this summer.”
If, as Mavericks fear, JJ Barea is lost for the rest of the season, it’s a terrible blow for them and one of their best players and best guys. Knowing him, though, he will come back firing in 2019-20. Can’t keep a fighter down

These two football teams gave Sam Jordan — a student with Down’s Syndrome — a special senior night.
Sam has been the student manager on the squad for four years.

This is the Twitter content I’m here for...
Luka Doncic on Dirk Nowitzki’s showing in Sunday’s All-Star Game: “He should have played more. They would have won for sure.” Mavericks are all back for practice today in Dallas.
LA Clippers just gave the blueprint on how to slow down Luka Doncic, who finishes 0-for-8 from 3-point land and 4-of-14 overall with seven TOs. But most other teams don't have Patrick Beverley, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George to throw at Doncic.
Luka Doncic on dealing with the referees in preseason: “It’s better, but it’s only preseason. Now the real deal starts, so we’ll see then how it looks. It’s hard, but it’s something I have to do. t’s a part of the game I need to control better. And I think it’s getting better.
Nice comment by Luka Doncic when asked about if he pays attention to the standings with under 20 games left. He said he doesn't understand the point of playing 72 games to make the playoffs, then how a team could be out if it loses two games in the play-in. Not a bad commentary.
Luka Doncic on having Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford on the Mavs: “They’re both pretty similar, both great players. To have those two on the team is unbelievable to me. Rebounding, blocking shots, dunking, the energy. He (Gafford) brings a lot and I’m happy he’s on our team"
Wow. A great video about the legends that Dirk Nowitzki has passed on the scoring list in the last five seasons. Oscar, Hakeem, Elvin, Moses, Shaq and now Wilt. Dirk certainly belongs with all those other one-name wonders.
Mavericks' Jalen Brunson on being named college player of decade by Sporting News. "It hasn’t really sunk in. I try not to think about it. Accolades will only hurt me if I listen to it. I’m humbled by it. But I got to keep moving forward. I’ll worry about all that when I retire."
Mavericks' game Sunday at Toronto is at 2:30 p.m. Dallas time. One of the reasons for the afternoon start is it's being highlighted as one of the NBA's Europe Primetime Games. It will be shown live in 109 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
That's the kind of play for the Mavericks that does wonders for team chemistry. Luka made the right basketball play and Brunson hit the corner three that could not have been more wide-open. Huge trust-builder for both players. Mavericks up 118-112 with 18 seconds left.
First 2-0 start for Mavericks since 2004. They win in New Orleans. Rick Carlisle walking off the court with game ball in hand. Not sure who I'd give it to tonight. Lots of key contributors.
The last time I had beers with Gerry Fraley was at the legendary Kays Lounge in Houston before it shuttered its doors. He loved the joint, like most ballwriters. Now he’s sitting at the Texas shaped table in the sky. Sports writing has lost a great one.
J.J. Barea may not have the name recognition, but he's done as much as anybody in the NBA this year for community service with his efforts to help Puerto Rico rebuild. Hence, he's up for two major awards.
Jason Kidd on Golden State playing a lot of zone in Game 4: "The biggest compliment we've gotten is they got to play zone because they can't play us one on one, right? This is a championship DNA team. They're giving you a compliment that they can't guard you. It's pretty cool."
Courtney Lee on watching Kristaps Porzingis and Luka Doncic combine for 57 points in their first game together: "You get those two big European studs on the same team, it’s fun to watch. My job was easy. All I had to do was chase Beal off and when you get an open shot, shoot it"
Remember Josh Richardson, who spent last season with the Mavericks? He's quietly averaged 18.3 points and shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range in the Spurs' four-game win streak that has put them into the play-in picture. Good dude. Glad he is having some success.
And as we suspected for eight months, Luka Doncic is rookie of the year. Mom, Rick, girlfriend, all look very elated. This was a no brainer, although we have great respect for what's ahead for Trae Young and Deandre Ayton.
