“Americans are watching an inflation bait-and-switch…Donald Trump has officially abandoned his promise to fix inflation. Maybe he never intended to fix it at all.” Very good at ⁦@crampell⁩. We knew this was coming.

On this excellent day for football, I share a great piece about how to move forward from Trump by Theda Skocpol, as wise a political scientist as she is a very knowledgeable football fan. “How to Take Heart From What Really Worked in the First Resistance”

“Trump’s executive orders are not exactly crowd-pleasers.” Great @pbump piece on hints in the polls that Trump’s early moves are courting a backlash. Nice kicker: The public overwhelmingly believes that Congress has a duty to check Trump’s power.

Trump did everything possible in his speech to confirm the fears of those of us who were alarmed about what his 2d presidency would mean. He confirmed that the next four years will require vigilance and activism in defense of liberty & democratic values.

Trump’s speech was overreach, divisive, without any sense that there might be good & decent people in the country who disagree with him. He has only one definition of “unity”: Everyone bowing to his will. From the live discussion with my colleagues:

“We, as a people, will get to the Promised Land,” Dr. King promised. We must never give up his confidence. But we must be honest with ourselves at times like ours, when we risk allowing visions of the Promised Land to fade away. 2020 thoughts on #MLKDay

This by ⁦@ezraklein⁩ is one of the very best pieces I have read about why the vibes right now are so overwhelmingly Trump even though the election was close. (He also has some hope for the Trump opposition at the end.) via @NYTOpinion

“At the Hegseth hearing, GOP senators covered themselves in shame.” It was “a gross dereliction of duty on the part of the Republican-controlled Senate and the Trump-directed FBI.” Exactly right from ⁦@RuthMarcus⁩.

“We don’t actually know if we have restored the American tradition of a peaceful transfer of power,” an agreement “that the voters have the final say.” “We have no evidence that Trump would have honored this agreement had he lost.” Important from @jbouie

“The L.A. Apocalypse Was Entirely Predictable.” Fascinating piece by my friend ⁦@HaroldMeyerson⁩, an LA native whose house narrowly missed being burned in the 1960s.

The inspiring tributes to Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral do justice to a good and remarkable man. Eulogists are understandably wary at these moments of describing politicians as politicians. But despite his 1980 defeat, Carter had exceptional political gifts. My essay:

Jimmy Carter’s decency stands in contrast to the coarse & self-absorbed political era that lies ahead. But Carter was also a politician. My essay assesses his political gifts & shortcomings; how he rebuilt FDR’s coalition & why it blew apart on his watch.

Jimmy Cater RIP A good man whose extraordinary post-presidential life included a Nobel Peace Prize. His presidency was troubled but he was prophetic on energy & human rights. Exceptional @washingtonpost obituary by KevinSullivan and Edward Walsh.

Don’t fret that the opposition to Trump is in a reflective mood. Activism is coming & learning from 2024 means it will have a better understanding of how we got into this mess — and how to get out of it. We in the media have learning to do, too. My column
