Have a close friend or family member that has undergone a trauma? It is important to recognize that close friends / family can develop secondary PTSD from witnessing a devastating event happen to a loved one. Don’t forget to look for symptoms of PTSD.

Calling all providers! Up to 20% of survivors of traumatic injury can develop PTSD. Patients at high risk of PTSD should be screened using the PCL-5 DSM-5 self-report measure which is a 20-item assessment with a variety of uses. Read more here:

Did you know that patients need to have PTSD symptoms for at least 1 month to be diagnosed? Prior to the 1 month mark, the term Acute Stress Disorder is used to describe this constellation of symptoms. This can often develop into PTSD long term. Read here:

Calling all trauma providers! If your patient is trying to quit drinking, consider engaging the appropriate services to see if it is appropriate to prescribe them medication to help at discharge. This can decrease risk of future trauma related injuries:

Multiple scoring systems exist that clinicians use both to help predict risk of withdrawal and to quantify severity of withdrawal. Several of these include the AUDIT, PAWSS and CIWA. These can help guide treatment and improve morbidity:

Screening is key! Have you ever heard of the the abbreviation SBIRT? It stands for “Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment” and is a means to deliver early intervention for patients at risk or treatment for those who need it.

Did you know that up to 50% of trauma patients seen at Level I Trauma Centers screen positive for alcohol use in a way that puts them at risk of future alcohol related problems? Alcohol can contribute to up to 41% of trauma reinjury cases! Check out:
