This is a myth that may never be put to rest, but sit-ups are not a back breaker. The spine is meant to flex, extend, rotate, and side bend. If you want to do sit-ups, they’re great for working your abdominals. If you’d prefer to perform the exercises he demonstrated, that’s fine too. You can also do both. Exercise selection doesn’t have to be dichotomous.
