Reporting for The Guardian in Charlottetown (a SaltWire paper) since 1995. Animal lover. Star Trek nerd. Blue Jays fan, multi-decade Leafs victim. (He, him)
We lost a lot of damned good people yesterday. You may like what we do. You may not. You may think it’s worth $1 per week. You may not. Whatever. But I’ll tell you one thing. Editorial, production, advertising, whatever ... I’d go to battle with every single one of them anytime.
Thank you to the staff in Unit 1-2 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Whisperwood Villa for their care of mom the past month and a half. We said goodbye to her last night. Love you forever, mom.
I find January the hardest month of the year. I suffer from depression and anxiety and have no problem taking about it. Blessed to have a supportive partner and a great work family. To all those who struggle you are not alone.
Talked to someone tonight having a mental health crisis. Convinced them to go to the ER and stayed on the phone until they got there. If u are experiencing a mental health crisis, call 911, go to the ER or call the Island Helpline at 1-800-218-2885.
Many landlords incur a lot of grief on social media. Thought I’d give ours a shoutout for a thoughtful gesture. He bought tulip bouquets for all the units today to brighten people’s day. He’s one of the good ones.
Only on PEI could you be wandering through the ferry compound talking to random people about the
#AtlanticBubble
and come upon a couple, whom you’ve never met before and find out the husband is your cousin.
Released from hospital today. Still wobbly on my legs and dealing with what I would call paranoia symptoms having left hospital. Can’t thank those who reached out and helped this past week enough.
Had the chance to interview former Compass anchor Bruce Rainnie this morning. Says he still talks to
@BoomerPEI
almost daily and gets forecasts “whether I like it or not”. Haha.
A shoutout to the wonderful care supplied by Pat & the Elephant as we moved mom into Whisperwood Villa today. They were amazing and very gentle. It was very much appreciated.
Anyone else, especially at night, slow down or almost stop at a crosswalk to let someone go only to find out it’s one of the scarecrows in Charlottetown?
Update on a recent story I did with PEI entertainer Michael Pendergast. He had been lobbying
@ChtownPE
for a ceilidh fest at Victoria Park but had met with lukewarm response.
@summersidePEI
scooped it up.
I may have been there in an official capacity today, but it was an honour to have been part of the
#BlackLivesMatter
march in Charlottetown today. Organizers did a splendid job. One of the most impressive gatherings I’ve seen in the city.
Canada’s Worst Driver could do a series this summer in Charlottetown with the number of vehicles doing musical lane changes. And supermarket parking lots have turned into speedways. It’s the summer of survival out there.
Kim and I are a wreck right now. Had to put our cat Tilly down tonight. Knew something was wrong. Rushed him to vet, told it was heart disease. Just crushed. 💔 RIP little buddy
Stopped at two big Sobeys stores for supper on way home. Both closed. Stopped at tiny Coopers in Belfast where business was booming. Score one for the mom and pop operations.
To the person in front of me who bought my coffee at Robin’s in Montague today. Thank you. It’s the little things. There was no one behind me so I’ll pay it forward next time.
Premier Dennis King, CPHO Dr. Heather Morrison and chief nursing officer had their first vaccines today. Waiting the required 15 minutes after the shot before speaking to the press.
It goes without saying life at
@PEIGuardian
is going to be a lot different now. There’s no one like him. Bill is one of a kind. Proud to have worked, and golfed, with him.
Congrats to Bill McGuire, retiring from The Guardian after an incredible 44-year run in newspapers. Billy was my first boss, a friend, a true newspaper man AND can't find a fairway to save his life.
Hit 'em straight now, McGuire. For once. And happy retirement, you phony prick.
Bless the volunteers at Milton Community Hall for giving out bags of groceries today. Food in there we haven’t had or been able to afford in some time. Appreciated more than you know.
Charlottetown chef Lucy Morrow not only advances to the final five next Monday on
@TopChefCanada
but she won the PEI challenge. Her prize? A free trip to PEI. 😆
Saddened to learn of the passing of former MLA and
@HC_Hurricanes
coach Ross Young. He coached my son in minor hockey and he was a friend. Couldn't find a better person to talk to. Always supportive, willing to help. Thinking about Mary and the family.
I respect differing viewpoints but I know my high school teen is looking forward to going back to school and, as with our health care system, I trust our teachers implicitly.
Pardon the dad bragging but looking at my daughter’s report card, 96, 90, 86 and 97 my first thought was how the heck I did this. LOL. Thank heavens she inherited my wife’s brains.
I crapped on
@Bell_Aliant
few days back. Well, I would like to thank Colleen and Moira who handle Bell Aliant issues on Twitter. They were a pleasure to deal with and we managed to solve many of the issues we had been having with billing. Thank you Colleen and Moira.
On the road for an assignment today, stopped to take picture of guy fishing off a bridge just for a general stand alone pic and, after introducing myself from The Guardian, he says to me "You can stick that thing up your arse''.
Dr. Chris Lantz is one of three health professionals registering at the QEH in Charlottetown for the first COVID-19 vaccine in PEI. History in the making.
Powerful moment driving past the Abegweit First Nation today in Scotchfort. I had to stop in. The public is invited to come pay its respects to the 215 Indigenous children found at the former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
Due to the evolving public health situation, the organizers of the PEI International Shellfish Festival have cancelled this year’s event. All tickets will be refunded.
