Our first paper from the Indonesian Suicide Prevention Strategy has been published 🎉🎉🎉
Here we - from all different industries and people groups - lay out the qualitative situational analysis and next steps. Suicide prevention is everyone’s business.
I did not think this day would come - but finally, Indonesia’s First Suicide Statistics Profile is out 🎉
We now have suicide data on underreporting, geography, gender, age, methods and rurality - analysed as part of our Situational Analysis. Link:
Two nights ago I called Lifeline (a suicide prevention hotline) , I was having some unsettling thoughts surrounding suicide. As psychology/mental health researchers, we’re definitely not immune - but I believe we should set an example in help seeking. (1/2)
It was hard. There was still guilt and shame holding me back from reaching out. But then I realized, these thoughts don’t mean I am not productive, strong, nor capable. And being able to ask for help was a sign of my strength, not weakness. I asked for help, you can too. (2/2)
I am thrilled to share that I am joining the team at
@WHO
HQ in Geneva, in mental health and substance abuse, advising countries on
#suicideprevention
strategies and surveillance. I hope to combine research, lived experience and policy in my new role. Wish me luck!
There has been a suicide case in
#Indonesia
with nationwide attention leaving us shocked and bereaved. However, our national media have put others at suicide risk by not following guidelines by showing methods, place, and more - we need this to stop now.
Yesterday evening the bill passed and for the first time in Indonesia’s history,
#SuicidePrevention
is explicitly mandated by law ( )🎉🎉🎉 . Its a huge victory for us all and the start of a new era for Indonesia’s
#SuicidePrevention
. What does this mean?🧵
A friend of mine died by suicide. We worked together in suicide prevention. I don’t know if I should be feeling this way, but I’m sad that with all my advocacy and work, I couldn’t help someone at arms length.
Today on
#WSPD2022
we are launching the Indonesian Association for Suicide Prevention at .For the first time
#Indonesia
has critical suicide data on a provincial level. Visit the site to see our national situational analyses!

Yesterday, during a mental health and suicide first aid talk for Indonesian pharmacists, a question came up ‘how do you differentiate X disorder and demonic posession?’. Interestingly, nobody (myself included) was surprised at the question - its a culture thing. (1/2)

My article in

I’m happy to announce that I will be Section Editor for the upcoming
@PLOS
MentalHealth Journal, for the Lived Experience Section! There has been lots of progress in LE, but few outlets for this work. We hope to change that!
Today I am officially Dr. Sandersan Onie. A huge thank you to everyone that helped me get where I am today, and who made the journey extra special. A special thanks to my amazing supervisor
@SBMost
who has encouraged me every step of the way!
Today is a very special day for me, my first book is out! Its a short book on practical peer support geared towards cultures where peer support is still sparse e.g. Indonesia. We have it in English and Indonesian and will have it in Mandarin soon. Visit
This is my dad (in white) and I am proud of him. In reponse to Indonesia’s economy being hit very hard due to COVID 19, he started a soup kitchen feeding 500 people a day. He is not a chef, nor is he in the restaurant business, and so he set this up from scratch.
@AmmarGill
I think there’s some truth to this. However, mental health does encompass good social skill as well as healthy self reflection and evaluation. All of what you’ve said that should come first instead of mental health, is part of mental health. Being hostile is unbeneficial to all.
This came in the mail today, it’s available for Rp68,000 (about $6.5AUD) at

knows how to help someone else - and will always find someone who can help and listen to them - in a dark time.

Glad I could finally graduate after a 2 year delay. Special shoutout to

Hi everyone, I’m in the final stages of a Nature Comment on how we can improve science in the Global South - and it will take all of us to get there. To show support and be a signatory, see here:

Hi, everyone - super excited to announce that from Jan 2021, I will be on the

To close off this rather unique year, I’m holding a physical copy of my book in my hands. Its small, and thin, but it was designed to be; a culmunation of my lived experience and all I know about mental health. We’re in final stages of getting this in online bookstores.

In research and many things, an unspoken bias amongst the Global South is thinking that by default, the Global North or ‘International’ is better. This has to change.
(1/7) In addressing the overtesting of WEIRD samples, I don’t feel the burden can be just be put on researchers to find diverse populations. We as a community need to play the long game to build and invest in infrastructure for uncommonly tested participants in other countries.

Often we don’t realize we need a break until something small just sets us down a spiral. Today I saw I had to cut some words to resubmit to another journal, and felt like it was the end of the world. Hope you’re all taking care of yourselves this season.
Great way to end the year! I found out that the book I authored on Indonesian

that our good friends from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) have created one of the largest, and best curated national science repositories in Asia. Theres even someone who will check every submission to ensure there is metadata.

@GinnyBarbour
We need a team science structure like
@PsySciAcc
but for mental health interventions and clinical research - low Ns sabotage the studies even with the best theoretical backing
How do we do better?
1) standardize measurement & pool data across trials before publishing
2) create actual journal submission avenues for doing this! That is: **incentivize team science** by prioritizing/fast tracking RCTs that pool across samples and/or have large Ns

Super excited to announce that a group of friends in Indonesia is starting a

organization - where i’ll be advising - aimed at providing resources and training for carers and improving peer support for MH. Launch is Dec, updates to come!
Ive heard this discussed before (maybe by
@siminevazire
or
@ceptional
) but what if we just had 1 science journal that accepted things based on methodological rigour and we let readers decide on whats interesting or not?
Excited to share that I have been elected as the
@IASPinfo
National Representative for Indonesia 2024-2027. Building off our 2023 policy wins, my team from the Indonesian Assoc for Suicide Prevention and I have four key goals, and we’d love to work with you to achieve them (1/5)
Early this week I saw a clinical psychologist due to feeling a bit off, I felt so much better and stronger overall after a chat. Just a reminder to everyone, its okay to seek help :) i’m definitely not weak, and neither are you.

One of the most crucial skills I had to learn in grad school is how to rest. I would feel drained on weekends, and then I realized: Work was on my mind, even if I was ‘resting’. Like a chrome browser with unused tabs open. I had to learn to be present. Can anyone else relate?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share about an exciting new project! For a period, i’ll be overseeing ‘pria tagar tegar’, a foundation with provides online counselling and help for men in sexually, physically and emotionally abusive relationships in Indonesia.
I recently found out that when you type in ‘how to commit suicide’ in Indonesian, there aren’t any helplines or resources that immediately show up. I think I’ve found my next project.

for non-native English speakers when reading/publishing papers and attending/presenting at international conferences.
