Associate Professor. Housed in
@LSJ_Leeds
at University of Leeds.
@SLSA_UK
trustee. Intersex Justice and Jurisprudential Futures. All views my own (he/him)
If I was the vice chancellor of a large Russell Group University I would simply meet representatives of the Unions in order come up with a de-escalation strategy so that my students could graduate 🤷♂️🤷♂️
3 of my dissertation students have got in touch to say they’re ecstatic to have me as my supervisor.
Even if it’s a total lie this is absolutely how you manage me.
Very pleased to say I’ve been promoted to Associate Professor. My thanks go to
@mortonjen
and her red pen and
@AlastairMullis
latent obsession with ‘narrative’. All my gratitude to my colleagues at
@LSJ_Leeds
and wider
@Law_Leeds
crew without whom I’d be nothing.
Reminder: if lecturers were able to brainwash students we would use our powers to make them understand where the module handbook is the first time we say it
During one of my seminars today I gave a 5 minute summing up of the key issues and thanked the students for a fun and engaging session before realising I hadn’t let them out of their breakout groups and I was talking to myself.
The last year has been the hardest of my career in terms of workload and mental health and so the well-being week email I received this morning encouraging me to do spiritual labyrinth walking and a legs bums and tums session seems like a particularly unfunny joke.
One of my students emailed me today just to say they were mega excited to learn about gender and the law and I replied to say I was mega excited to teach it and that’s the exact energy I live for.
It’s hard to overstate how much this man has done for me.
He’s been kind when I needed kindness and patient when I needed patience.
Wishing
@AlastairMullis
a very long and happy retirement. Much love from all at
@Law_Leeds
Very excited to take over from Jen Hendry as the new co-director of the Centre for Law and Social Justice at the University of Leeds.
I’m joining the illustrious ranks of Michael Thomson, Julie Wallbank, Marie-Andree Jacob and Jen so there’s some big shoes to fill!
The end of July marked the end of my four-year tenure as Co-Director of
@Law_Leeds
' Centre for Law & Social Justice
@LSJ_Leeds
. Delighted to hand this role over to
@DrMitchTravis
, who joins Marie-Andreé Jacob to form an excellent leadership team for the Centre going forward.
If I upset a whole group of students on the basis of a protected characteristic under the Equality Act I’d probably take some time to examine my actions and apologise 🤷♂️
#AlevelResultsDay2022
is Thursday. Remember when I did my A-levels we were part of the EU, energy was capped and climate change was reversible. My A-level experiences are irrelevant to you and so are everyone else’s tweeting about how they did well despite them.
Congratulations to all those graduating from
@Law_Leeds
today. I’ll be smashing this tinny in your honour as soon as I’ve got these kids in bed
#LeedsGrad
And yes I have a man bun now
So since 2014 $707,000,000 US Dollars has come into Europe with the express aim of rolling back women’s reproductive rights and LGBT rights.
Cool. Cool cool.
It is talent day at school tomorrow. My 5 year old daughter has registered her talent as ‘tennis’. She held a tennis racket only once in her life 2 months ago.
I have somehow imbued in her the reckless over confidence of the white man. Long may it continue. Take up space my love
This is why I’m absolutely not dropping this.
How many students have been left thinking does this Uni or law school value the freedom to make transphobic claims over and above my personal safety?
If I was a student I would bring it up at every single open day.
And honestly, you can support academic freedom and stand up for free speech without signing a letter you know is signed by hateful people. The real impact of this letter is making students wonder if they are safe around you or not.
To my students.
I’m always learning. Always listening.
If there’s more I can do to centre race in my classroom then talk to me. I try my best - but my best is better in conjunction with you.
Solidarity always
Pretty sure Intersex Embodiment comes out today along with the much cheaper e-book. If yours arrives please send me photos! I want to see it out in the wild!
We’ve heard a lot about silencing but what is it like to be trans academic right now?
Props to
@AlexSharpe64
and
@stephenwhittle
for continuing to inspire us.
Fae Garland and I have this new article out in the Journal of Law and Society. It argues that the state needs to step in over intersex issues and saying ‘this is a medical issue’ won’t cut it.
Currently open access! I hope it’s useful for intersex friends
Students and parents attending open days today: make sure to ask staff what concrete steps the University and its management have taken to end the ongoing industrial action.
Honoured to be elected to the
@SLSA_UK
board of trustees. Such an amazing and important vehicle for UK law and legal theory and I’m so glad to be a part of it.
Flight attendant: Is anyone here a doctor?
Dad: *nudging me* that should've been you
Me: I am a Dr Dad
Dad: Not asking for a Gender Theorist, are they?
Me: Da...
Dad: Go and see if they are performing non-therapeutic medical interventions on the bodies of intersex children
New article 'Management of ‘disorders of sex development’/intersex variations in children: Results from a freedom of information exercise'
It's open access and it has a number of important findings!
Proud to see these three PhD studentships being advertised for UK Black & Asian candidates at
@UniversityLeeds
If you scroll through the comments you’ll also see why they’re sorely sorely needed.
Please RT so we can recruit three great people and ruin a haters day.
Faculty of Social Sciences
@UniversityLeeds
invites PhD applications from candidates from UK Black, Asian & other minoritised ethnic groups. 3 scholarships available (full UK fees + maintenance grant at current UKRI rates) for studies starting Oct 1, 2024
So today marks 10 years of being a full-time permanent lecturer. It’s wild to think about all the great people I’ve met along the way. So just a general cheers to all who’ve supported me!
Here’s a picture of my young colleagues
@CJNewberyJones
and Fae Garland dancing in 2012
Is anyone else obsessed with students who join your online class, don’t contribute anything and then don’t leave the session at the end? What is the world record for overshooting pretending to be in a seminar?
Yesterday I watched my brother drop kick my other brother off a bouncy castle.
Not sure if that’s the old normal or the new normal but it sure was nice to see them again after a year and a half.
Are you suffering from sleepless nights, increased lethargy and a decrease in productivity? Why not view it as a taster session in parenting?
For an intermediate experience cook tiny versions of your own food, cut them up into small pieces, then throw them directly on the floor
Really sad that
@LSJ_Leeds
founder and co-director Michael Thomson leaves Leeds today for a new position at UTS. He’s a very special person who has had a huge impact on my life and career. Here’s a picture of us together last night and roughly 10 years ago.
New article from me and
@FaeGarland
drops today in
@FLS_journal
‘Gendered Childhoods, Linear Sex Development and Unruly Temporalities’
It feels particularly relevant given the increasingly hostile world that trans people face
Massive props to the kind souls that handed it in/didn’t destroy it as a bomb threat.
I’ve learnt nothing from this experience. Zero personal growth. 👍👍👍
Me and
@GlexAreen
are putting together a panel proposal on ‘Jurisprudence of the Future: Law, Justice and Science Fiction’ at the Law, Literature and the Humanities Association of Australasia Conference. Hit us up by 4th September if you’d like to be part of it!
