I PASSED THE EPPP!!!!!!
I’m so happy/relieved I could cry if I weren’t so hungry, cold & dehydrated 😂
PrepJet is what I used to practice. Legit finished reading the last module this morning, but heeeeyyyy recency effects
@tressiemcphd
This is one of the reasons that I did not have a videographer at my wedding in 2014. People had a blast partying & there were hookups! My brother got married a year earlier & the camera people were always in the way. They have a lovely wedding video but we have everlasting tea!
@adhd_ffs
Those big life things have very clear implications. The more mundane tasks often have a bunch of hidden/unacknowledged steps that can be burdensome for those with compromised executive function that have to use all their mental faculties to carry out each step!
I have also observed at this conference how many people were diagnosed with
#ADHD
in adulthood, women in particular.
The diagnosis is usually prompted by life changes which make previous coping mechanisms untenable. Often it’s parenting. Burnout. Relationships.

I think after checking for the usual suspects (diaper, hungry, hair), I attributed to a cognitive leap/growth spurt. I figured it’s weird & unsettling for them but then they get used to it.
Glad baby is better!
Is there an evidence based strategy for figuring out what you want to eat when you haven’t eaten in hours but have no specific craving & are too tired to prepare a meal? 👀
“Things do not have to be pleasant to be going well.”

One of my favorite ways of using my power & privilege as a clinical psychologist is telling patients w ADHD, after a few sessions of getting to know each other, that there is nothing inherently wrong with them & that we can find solutions to their problems.
@QuinettaPhD
@SandraNoDuerme
Ooh can you send them an article about all the unpaid labor POC in Academia end up doing? Just send it with an email like “here are some ideas to get you started”
Alan Brown makes some excellent points about procrastination:
1. It’s about emotion regulation
2. Aiming to finish something is anxiety provoking
3. Celebrate STARTING. You did something for 45 seconds? Celebrate not procrastinating!
#ADHD2022
@blkgirllostkeys
This is cool! I recently learned that joint hypermobility spectrum disorders are overrepresented in ADHD. The laxity in ligaments & connective tissue may underlie vertical heterophoria by making it harder for eyes to focus.
Also I love this picture. Psychedelic steampunk vibe
🤣one of the CBT for ADHD group members quoted Dr. Solanto’s saying “Whenever means not ever!” As a reminder for her to set a time to study.
The distress in committing a task to a date/time though? 😖
What if it’s cold or I’m tired or hungry or sleepy or busy???
One of my favorite lies to tell myself is that I’ll get to it at a time when I’m in the mood.
Knowing there’s never going to be a mood that makes me have executive function.
Fix it, somebody.
I am loving the
#ADHD2022
conference so far!
How is it different from conferences I typically attend?
WELL. This neuroinclusive conference has had the best audience participation I’ve ever seen. Also truly amazing colorful hair styles 😍
AGREE. I also think classrooms & work spaces should be neuroinclusive by default. This does not harm typically developing children but can really make a difference for those who are struggling in other ways.
Just like schools test for hearing and sight, and learning disabilities they should test for ADHD. Across the board. It is JUST as important to a student’s ability to learn as everything else.
Okay if you, a cis man at a women’s sponsored lunch make the event go over time to talk about you being an LGBTQ ally but feeling like they/them pronouns are grammatically incorrect—
It’s not pleasing me & my homegirls, we’re walking out.
@WhatTheADHD
I agree! because then when people with ADHD are able to hyperfocus on something they like, parents and others argue that it can't be ADHD. like Sir. Do you focus on something so intensely that you forego food, water, sleep?
@kattenbarge
@RyanMarino
Yes! The fact that he is not a psychologist but portrayed himself as an authority on the mind, but of course on a personal podcast, as if his position in society, as a scientist, is a suit he can take on & off across settings. He clearly leveraged that to enrich himself
@NikkiCallowayy
This is still depression though 😔 depression doesnt always look like sadness. It can look like “keeping myself alive is too much work” and “I don’t feel [like doing] anything.”
This can be really disabling! Making it hard to literally do basic things. It deserves attention ❤️
@ElyKreimendahl
Something like this happened to me, I was the friend who was "dumped." I was struggling and my bestie at the time distanced herself. A couple of years later she apologized for it via IM & I appreciated it. Helped repair the memory of the relationship & we keep in touch somewhat
Also started a very small private practice & received payment yesterday from patient. It’s not a lot bc they are sliding scale but it felt so good & official to have the first completed transaction for my business 🥹
@Karnythia
Him trying to spin his gambling into a “favor” for his wife to work fewer hours was, perhaps, the cherry* on top.

I don’t know Dr. Aly personally, but this tweet scared tf out of me. Like—a whole R01? MULTIPLE AWARDS?
It’s ROUGH out in these academic streets!
I hope Dr. Aly is heavily courted by competing institutions who recognize the importance of her & her work. ❤️
Today I learned that
@Columbia
will not be promoting me or putting me up for tenure. I have multiple active grants (including an R01 and a CAREER award) plenty of publications, a teaching award, and a history of DEI advocacy. Open to all opportunities in and out of academia.
Anyone can experience something like tinnitus or light sensitivity. No one is saying that people with ADHD or autism are the only ones who deal with them.
The difference is that we're more likely to hyperfixate on these things, which can interfere with our mood and focus.
@NicoleLewisLCSW
Woowww they really missed the mark. This could have been a great article about how self-employed women in psychology & counseling have to take extra precautions to protect their peace & the need for more clinicians to match the needs of the public but no…they did this instead 😔
Treatment will not change your ADHD brain to a neurotypical one (concurring w recent post by
@blkgirllostkeys
).
And that is okay & also great. I loved working w neurodiverse kiddos! They are so imaginative, passionate, funny and ALIVE…
@notcapnamerica
This is so weird, I need other boy moms to teach their kids to cook and do laundry, to be kind and generous so they don’t end up on the news storming the capitol building or on incel chatrooms 🤦🏻♀️
The unnerving accuracy of this article! Auditory processing is harder when there are a lot of similar-volume noises to filter out. It’s hard to explain & frustrating. Cobbling together a complete picture from incomplete information is a learned skill w ADHD, out of necessity!
“asking you to repeat yourself for a 5th time seems excessive. So I only half grasp the conversation we’re having. Or you ask me a follow up question and I realize I have NO IDEA what we’re talking about.”
“…if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Oh, I HATE that phrase! Because I hate to fail. I ALSO hate to plan.”
FELT!
A timely throwback article on procrastination 👇🏼

I’m convinced research + clinical work is the way for me. Connecting with & supporting others helps me bring more humanity into my research, which can feel sterile & impersonal at times. Doing only clinical work can feel too restricting & overwhelming at times. I need balance.
Yesterday I accepted an offer that would allow me to continue at Columbia for at least another year, giving me time to refine & submit a K award.
This means I had to withdraw my application for a tenure track clinical faculty position at City College. It was such a hard choice-
My NYS license to practice as a psychologist arrived in the mail today!!!!

The adderall/ADHD med shortage continues to wreak havoc & I am tired. Had a pt cancel bc they are out of meds & are taking the day to call around to pharmacies.
Truly this whole situation is kicking people when they’re down & places an unfair burden on patients.
Today is the last day of
#ADHD2022
and it has finally dawned on me that I have been struggling to advance a project while SURROUNDED by executive function/adhd coaches for the past 3 days. 😒
Who else struggles to utilize the resources available RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACES? 🙈

This part!!! Oh god I hope you’re okay. What an invasion of personal space! Good thing your reflexes are working as they should, I feel like this was a routine maintenance check 😂
Facts! Across the diaspora, this is reinforced. My 🇩🇴 mom feels straight hair is “elegant.” When i had curly hair, my dad was like “ahh! Una bruja!” (😒says me w straight hair in all my professional online photos🙈. Decolonization of thought is an arduous process!)
"Black women’s hair is 2.5x more likely to be perceived as unprofessional. Because of this, 2/3 of Black women change their hair for a job interview...nearly half (44%) of Black women under 34 feel pressured to have a headshot with straight hair."

I hope all the Latine youth grill & side eye their tías at family gatherings because Nury’s racism is mighty familiar 😒 I wish her a life of inconvenience and accelerated aging.
I hope that little boy & all her melanated targets are uplifted every day of their lives.
Nury Martinez: Compared Black child to a “changuito" (monkey) & joked about beating him. Called Oaxacan immigrants “little short dark people.”
Also, Nury Martinez:"To all the little Latina girls across the city - I hope I've inspired you to dream beyond that which you can see."

It is really hard to have everything at your literal fingertips at any time of day, without any limits that are not self-imposed.
Ooh excellent question by audience member who struggles with procrasti-planning, where you over-plan as a form of procrastination.
Alan Brown’s response was inviting procrasti-planners to attempt a task and FAIL. Yes. Try the task & allow urself to fail.

Constructive feedback to
@ACNPorg
about this would be more active moderation of these spaces. We’re *literally* researchers here.
Giving space to harmful speech from a privileged person as a “teaching” tool does so at the expense of marginalized groups. Don’t.
Okay if you, a cis man at a women’s sponsored lunch make the event go over time to talk about you being an LGBTQ ally but feeling like they/them pronouns are grammatically incorrect—
It’s not pleasing me & my homegirls, we’re walking out.
People who have or study ADHD are responding to these data feeling validated while those who do not are jumping in to disqualify this excellent work—for no reason!
I’m confused about this bc if it doesn’t hurt you & helps others—minding your business is FREE!
I encourage the housekeeper to bring her baby* if she needs/wants to, I even got a portable pack n play that we keep here for her (ADORABLE) infant son.
And I just LOVE hearing her laugh at/with him while working. 🤗

@Swilua
I’m glad other doctors have debunked this myth, but I still want to say that there is no ethical way to research this in humans so it’s unlikely to be true.
Ooh yes I think chatGPT is a good resource for ADHDers in that it can prevent deep dives into rabbit holes trying to answer a question. Prioritizing can be extra challenging when there is a persistent question you want an answer to!
"The chat bot helps me stay focused because it offers real-time answers and the ability to ask follow-up questions for better results. My thinking and writing processes are not linear: ChatGPT affords me a controlled chaos."

Is it common practice to ask for one page proposals from postdoc candidates? I feel like this does not serve the postdoc at all if people can just take their ideas & not hire?
This happens in other fields, & I dont believe scientists are morally superior & immune from this
I love
@blkgirllostkeys
! Have recommended her page to patients & clinicians seeking resources for Black clients with ADHD. Really great tips for common hurdles for ND people.
As a Black woman with ADHD I really appreciate people who contribute to demystifying the disorder and just making it feel less lonely. My ADHD looks differently than the stereotypical presentation (white male).
@blkgirllostkeys
gives a lot of great information to that end and she

It has empowered them to seek accommodations, support, community.
To recognize their strengths & not be defined by areas of weakness.
This is so important
This morning’s talk is by Dr. Theodore Beauchaine on the topic of ADHD & suicide risk. Pictured are two of the slides. One shows how ADHD & maltreatment have additive risk for suicide & NSSI in girls & the other is a paper on financial distress & suicide in adhd.

I think I uploaded before class bc students liked to print the slides out to take notes. Attendance was already a part of their grade, so I wasn’t concerned about them not coming. Asking for slides beforehand is already more responsible than I was in college!

@NikkiCallowayy
I wholeheartedly agree. I was just coming back here to add that the world is demanding way too much of us as it’s burning. it’s not on you or all in your head. Some people are able to stick things out but if we can’t see an end to the madness it can contribute to hopelessness
The likelihood to die by unnatural causes for those with ADHD who have never taken any meds. 😳 These causes include fatal injuries & accidents, motor-vehicle accidents, suicide, and chronic health problems like cardiovascular disease. Dr. Joel Nigg has published papers on this.
Why is the conversation always “look how many people think they have/are something because of the Internet” and not “WOW, why is our screening for this SO BAD that people find out they potentially have it ON THE INTERNET”
Does nobody realize THAT is the point?
The relief of passing the EPPP! It means if I dont get a grant funded I can still have a job/find a job/work for myself.
It’s MAJOR. Now watch me bang out like 3 grant apps in short succession now that I have options 😭
@thecindynoir
@covimc9
This! I tell my patients you don’t have to be perfect to be deserving of love. But we do need to be in a place where we can accept the love, so working on that, being able to receive the good, is important lifelong healing work that happens alongside relationships
Um I just want to shout out

Actually, I’d love for people to do this for their dissertation. I would have done it for family members who attended my defense.
Also, idk about other people’s, mine was good 😂
@blaqueerflow
😔 it’s so great that you provided this space & that they used it! It adds insult to injury amidst all the trauma to yet again see how some lives are collectively valued more than others.
I didnt get the grant I applied for in January. I’m bummed but also knew it was a long shot.
Been questioning whether research at an institution is for me? Bc they want your work to be more important than raising your kids or having a life outside of academia.
I’ve said it before to myself & others, but we don’t prepare as much for success as we do for failure.
I knew exactly what I’d do if I’d have failed the EPPP (witness protection), but did not make a plan for if I passed.
Realizing that catching up on work is not celebrating
