Usually I don’t talk about stuff like this because frankly it happens way too often. But not today…
As I pulled into the same faculty parking lot that I park in all the time
@msstate
, a white woman was coming out of my office building. Her car was parked next to the space I
Anyway, I’m too blessed to be stressed. But I’m silent too often about stuff like this and it leads folk to believe that i’m not having these experiences. So for the record, I do. Hope y’all have a great day.

I’m truly overwhelmed by the support I’ve received over the last 24 hrs. I feel the love. Genuinely, thank y’all. 🙏🏾
Grateful to have an awesome dept. head who helped me find her name and file a report. I’ve already been contacted about next steps…
This is the type shit I have to deal with as a Black faculty member. I’m thrown off. Don’t feel like teaching anymore and it’s not fair to my students. Best believe I’ll be doing some investigating on my own because her superiors will be hearing from me by COB tomorrow.
Yesterday I submitted my dossier for early promotion. Today I’m trying to prove to some random woman that I’m actually affiliated with the institution. And people wonder why POC are leaving higher ed.
She then asks for my name and says she’s going to talk to
@msuprkg_trnst
. I let her know that my name is none of her concern and I invite her to contract them and when she finds my name, Google me. 🙃
I say “May I help you ma’am?” And she asks “are you supposed to be here?” Just Iike that. I say with restraint, “yes, I’m a tenure track assistant professor in the College…this is my 2nd year here and 15th in higher ed. Again, how may I help you”
As I’m walking away, I notice her get out of her car and inspect my car for a faculty parking permit. I proceed to walk back to my car because she got the right one today…
There’s so much I want to say, and perhaps one day I will, but today I choose peace. Putting it in God’s hands and pressing forward. Can’t let ignorance distract me from my purpose. Much love to y’all. ❤️
I am thrilled to finally share some exciting news. This fall I’ll be joining the faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi as a tenure track assistant professor of higher education. Me, a professor! What a time.

Look. We have to stop talking about students needing “grit” and “resiliency” and start discussing ways to change our campus environments so that they’re more equitable for minoritized students. They don’t need grit; they need us to deconstruct barriers to their success.
I can’t express how blessed and lucky I am to have had the opportunity to share the stories of Black first-generation doctoral recipients.
What began as simply my diss topic transformed into the vehicle I needed to survive my doc journey. Sankofa realized. I am grateful. 🙏🏾

To all the educators I’ve had throughout the years: I want to offer a public apology for being frustrated with y’all when I didn’t have my grades back within 72 hrs of turning in work.
It was foolish, insensitive and, frankly, inhumane of me. Please know that karma got me. 😅
2 initial reflections on MS:
1) The Southern hospitality is beautiful. Folks have been so kind. Strangers are genuinely invested in my transition. I love it.
2) Y’all, it’s hot here. Like take-your-breath-away hot. My Texas arrogance is humbled. I’m staying indoors til 8 pm 😂
I’ve never been more proud to be a Georgia Bulldawg than I was today. Excited that I will receive my Ph.D. from the Mary Frances Early College of Education, newly named after the first Black graduate of the institution. I can because she did.
