That video of Starmer talking about deporting Bangladeshis is going viral in many group chats. His own ward, Holborn and St Pancras, has a significant Bengali community. In Camden it’s at 6.8%. I need you all to come out and teach him a lesson: don’t vote Labour.

Just a small minority of Hindu extremists in #Leicester who are causing trouble & taunting the Muslims did u say? They’re out in their hundreds then play victim online afterwards. The police told Muslims it was all under control but clearly NOT! This is the reality on the ground.

After the UK, Italy has the largest Bengali community in Europe. Seeing the result of the elections makes me worried for what could happen to them. I know many migrated to the UK and this is most visible via the Italian-Bengali cafes dotted around East London.

“Britain is pretty poor for a rich place. U.K. living standards & wages have fallen significantly behind those of Western Europe. By some measures, in fact, real wages in the U.K. are lower than they were 15 years ago, &will likely be even lower next year.”

I have Brit Bengalis sharing how their baris (villages) are under water and how it’s their grand/parent (usually whoever’s the first to migrate to the UK) who built them, who sent the £. People’s whole life’s investment gone before their eyes.

This year marks 30 years since the attempted murder of Quddus Ali in Tower Hamlets, East London, on 08.09.1993. He was walking down Commercial Road in Stepney, London, when eight white youths beat and kicked him into a four-month-long coma. He was left permanently brain damaged.

We are witnessing an actual fetish developing here. Just look at the way she is spoken about in this thread, the juxtapositions and the use of proxies to reference her *finally* finding her ‘freedom’...🗑🗑🗑

I have said it before about other areas where I spend most of my days. And by ‘anything halal’ I mean actual halal meat options.

Anyone else notice how highly gentrified areas like Brick Lane/Hoxton/Shoreditch/Spitalfields have all these quirky restaurants and cafes but they don't serve anything halal?

People really should stop doing threads on the ‘Islamic/Muslim World’ but then proceed to cover Arabic-speaking countries only. Just stop.Acknowledge your knowledge gap, say you don’t know and are not interested in other Islamic/Muslim societies.

A really touching and poignant piece exploring how a younger generation of Bengalis struggle to communicate w/ their parents because of a lack of vocabulary to hold meaningful, in-depth conversations that go beyond the superficial. #Sylheti #Bengali

So many Muslims sharing their alphabet announcements are actually shameless. What is there to celebrate about having empire attached to your name? Ashol khobis okhol. Maybe learn a thing or two from Benjamin Zephaniah:

There’ll be Islamophobia like this deployed by various media outlets, using overt and covert language. The Muslim will be framed as the menace, the one who continuously requires interventions because of their so-called “backward” ways.

Forgive & forget appears a few too many times in this piece. The war is still within people’s living memory, there’s been no process of reconciliation, no reparation, no apology. I’ve sat & interviewed Bengalis who shared their traumas from the war.

I wrote a short piece on Leicester for @newlinesmag “The Islamophobic sentiments on Leicester’s streets, fuelled by more than 20 years of “War on Terror” discourse, have exposed a violent side of a community usually projected as the model minority.”

I delivered a lecture today at London Met Uni on South Asian organising with a specific focus on Bengalis. Special thanks to @sofiaakel for making this happen. We also met the legend Leila Hassan-Howe and got to hear her stories on organising w/ the Race Today Collective.

@sarahditum You seem totally at ease with replying to white women but not the women of colour? Why is that? Why are you okay with enabling racism?

I’m not entirely sure when or how this happened but my tl is littered w/ MT nonsense again about who cooks when, obligations, rights, curses. I call it nonsense because it takes out love, tenderness & gentleness from marriage and posits it as some bizarre transactional exchange.

My chapter in this book touches on how activists from across London came together to defend the Bengali community from racism and, most importantly, from the police violence many were enduring. The solidarity bw dif groups was organic and did not function as a market exchange.

These marches and demonstrations erupted following Altab Ali's death. This photo is from the march down Brick Lane in 1978. The below pic was taken by Paul Trevor. You can find more of his work here:

What I’ve noticed w/ this is how there’s still a level of gentleness&humanising employed to discuss that ‘it will take time’. I’ve never seen this extended to non-white groups who’re expected to ‘know’ asap. Ofc we know why this is: Europe(ans) needs racism to make its own image.

22/ Bangladeshi Tandoori Chai It’s made by taking iron tongs to place an earthen cup in a hot tandoor. When the cup is super-hot, it’s taken out and sweet milky chai is poured in, which sizzles & froths over. This chai is poured into another kulhad & served. #InternationalTeaDay

This is a documentary about Bengalis in the 90s in Camden, w/ a focus on Drummond Street (referred to as the Brick Lane of Camden), and a stone throw away from the Shurma Centre. These communities are still there and live in Starmer’s ward. Boot him out.
