Forthcoming in Economics Letters with @MariannaKudlyak: We compile a high-frequency, detailed geographic dataset and find that local stay-at-home orders issued March 16-22, 2020 triggered mass layoffs in the United States.

A super interesting paper by my co-author @DrErinWolcott, potentially explaining why we saw such a drastic increase in unemployment, but also a very quick recovery (Seems like an amazing paper to cover in different levels of macro classes too!)

We use recent advances in difference-in-difference estimation with staggered treatment. Our findings contribute to explanations for why unemployment recovered quickly once the orders were lifted.

(2) A fundamental question here is whether employment status is a “treatment” causing nonresponse. We leverage retrospective questions and find that employment increases nonresponse. Our baseline corrections ignores these "treatment" effects so are likely conservative.

@robin_j_brooks The decline is most severe for prime-age men without college. Because their real wages have also declined, this suggests a demand-side explanation.
