Hi,
@AnthemBCBS
: I have a preemie baby who can’t get his life-saving medication because you won’t cover it without me speaking to someone about pre-authorization. For 3 days I’ve been leaving messages and getting lost in phone trees. Can someone please DM me? We need to talk.
It's amazing how many of these little kids with COVID are presenting with croup-like symptoms. Whoever said this was a 'mild strain' was not a pediatrician.
I am seeing a child today with the most terrifying chief complaint in pediatrics: "Mother thinks something is wrong with her child."
Mothers are usually correct. I will be ordering tests.
These are our new vision check eye charts for kids who aren’t comfortable with letters yet. Almost all four-year-old boys refer to the symbol in the middle upper line as “a butt”. The girls say it is a heart.
9 year old patient: I want to be a doctor like you when I grow up.
Me: That's great; let me know when you're in medical school and you can come hang out with me in the office.
9 yo: But you're old; won't you be dead by then?
☹️☹️☹️☹️
Then I spoke with someone else an hour later and they told me that
@AnthemBCBS
'escalated the claim' but it is still not approved. This patient's father and I have each spent hours on this and we are still no closer to getting this done.
UPDATE: thanks to
#MedTwitter
someone did reach out to me but we still have no resolution. At 3PM I was told that the situation was resolved but when the family called the pharmacy, they were told that it was actually NOT authorized.
Me: Prescribe albuterol
Insurance company: We do not cover albuterol. Please prescribe Xopenex.
Pharmacy: Xopenex not approved for children under 4. Please prescribe albuterol.
Child: Still wheezing.
In my practice, I take care of a lot of children of physicians. All of these children (including my own) are fully vaccinated. Against COVID. Against HPV. Against influenza. And everything else they are eligible for. Every single one.

Dear media (and parents),
RSV is not a new virus. Yes, it's bad this year, but it's been with us for a while. Kids with colds do not need RSV tests in our office. You do not need to go to the ED with mild cold symptoms worried this is RSV.
Love,
Pediatricians
As a pediatrician, a parent and the son of a pharmacist, I have no bigger pet peeve than asking families to give ridiculous quantities of liquid medication. It’s okay to round the 2.85ml up to 3.
I’ve been out of work all week with a mild case of
#COVID
. I tested b/c I care about my patients.
If I followed the advice of this doctor, I would have exposed children and their families to COVID. Babies. Kids with cancer. Grandparents.
Please think about others and be kind.
I just had a lactation consultant tell me that tongue ties are over diagnosed and the recent increase in corrective procedures is a 'passing fad.' I almost cried with joy.
FINAL UPDATE: thanks to everyone, the issue is resolved. And special thanks to Rodney at
@AnthemBCBS
who took personal ownership and reached out to me and the family and got it done. Appreciate you all!
My daughter’s school just announced:
1) All staff members required to be vaccinated against
#COVID19
2) All students and staff required to wear masks indoors
3) The vast majority of eligible students are already vaccinated
We are excited for the school year to safely begin!
Our teenager
#CovidVaccine
clinic is completely full tonight and I could not be happier. Each of these vaccinated teens brings us one step closer to a normal life.
#ThisIsOurShot
I wish that every insurance company executive was required to spend one day with a physician or a patient as we try to navigate their endless phone trees, denials, and lack of empathy. It's truly infuriating that this is how our system works.
@DGlaucomflecken
So incredibly grateful to the scientists who made this happen. To the volunteers in the clinical trials. To my fellow frontline healthcare providers. To
@chocchildrens
who value and prioritize those of us in Primary and Acute Care.

I wanted to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone on Twitter and in the media who has been helping to push
@AnthemBCBS
to resolve the pre-authorization issues with my patient. Although we do not yet have complete resolution, there is now a whole team working on getting this done.
Neg COVID test on a vaccinated 6-year-old with recent exposure.
I told his mother that b/c he was vaxxed and negative he could go back to school.
She declined. She will keep him out & retest in 5 days because 'every transmission chain ends in a death.'
Lots of respect for her.
I might wear a mask at work for the remainder of my career. I have not only enjoyed two years without getting sick, but I also cannot smell it as much when the little kids poop in the office.
Say what you will about government run healthcare, but when the government was distributing these vaccines, we had ample supply on hand on the day the shots were approved. Now that this has been commercialized, we ordered vaccine weeks ago and are still waiting...
Today my practice took the most phone calls we have ever had in its history, beating the 2nd busiest day (yesterday) by over 100 calls.
Remember when we were worried that our system would get overburdened?
That has happened. And we are 2 days into school.
Be kind. Be patient.
BREAKING: Over a million healthcare providers received a coronavirus vaccine last week with no problems or complications at all. (It is not helpful to scrutinize every time someone has an allergy to a vaccine or medicine)
A Boston physician said he developed a severe allergic reaction after receiving Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine on Thursday. He self-administered his EpiPen and recovered quickly. Severe allergic reactions from the vaccine remain a rarity, experts said.
I take care of thousands of kids a year. I know lots of pediatricians. Who is seeing all of the vaccine-injured and dying children? Because we are not.
This garbage is not true and is leading to a distrust in science and vaccines that will actually cause kids to die.
I vaccinated over 100 members of my community against
#COVID19
today.
#ThisIsOurShot
to once again hug our grandparents, eat at a restaurant, and travel the world. Thanks to
@ochealth
and the countless volunteers who are bringing us closer to a normal world, one shot at a time.
Hey,
@ab_peds
: I’m pretty sure that
@PeterHotez
has fulfilled his learning requirements for the year. And I believe that being the unofficial spokesperson for all of us pediatricians should count as a quality improvement project.
This weekend renewing my American Board of Pediatrics
@ab_peds
maintenance of certification MOC requirements until the end of 2022. Mixed feelings, on the one hand always up for learning new things, on the other, I’m trying to save the world 🌍 from COVID19, so who has the time?
Highlights of my day as a volunteer vaccinator with
@ochealth
:
✅I vaccinated my synagogue’s cantor (below)
✅I vaccinated a 102 year old man and his wife of 74 years
✅Everyone in the observation area gave us volunteers a standing ovation.
It was a great day!
#ThisIsOurShot
I personally gave both of my kids their bilavent boosters today. They both told me that I did a good job, the greatest compliment a pediatrician dad could ever get.
On Monday
@UHC
approved a prior authorization for a 6-year-old to go to physical therapy but today I come to my office to find a 4-page form to fill out b/c they now 'need more information.' I called the rep with whom I spoke but she won't answer the phone and VM is full. Awesome
It is always baffling to me when parents refuse vitamin K for their newborns. Sad that anti-science and
#antivax
sentiment is putting newborns at even more unnecessary risk.
While driving to Las Vegas, our kids had us stop in Boulder City to take photos at the bench where Sam and Brian drew a pretty convincing sketch of George Washington. Excited for a new season of Jet Lag fun with
@wendoverpro
and
@thewheatgerm
and
@adamhchase
!
That being said, healthcare should not be accessible only to those with a lot of followers on
@Twitter
. Sadly, yesterday the California legislature killed
#SB250
which would have limited these administrative burdens on doctors and families. We have to do better!
Thanks so much to
@DavidBegnaud
for sharing the story of baby West and his family’s ordeal to get their insurance to cover his life-sustaining specialty formula.
This week, California
@drericball
tweeted, pleading with an insurance company (that denied coverage) to cover a baby formula that Dr. Ball’s patient needed to survive. It was resolved, after the tweet went viral & someone paid out of their own pocket to help the family.
My wife and I just received our bivalent
@moderna_tx
booster vaccines. My two kids will get their
@pfizer
ones tomorrow. Happy to boost my immunity against
#COVID19
to protect our family, my patients and our community.
#ThisIsOurShot
When did
@Cigna
get a license to practice pediatric medicine in California?
They seem to tell all of my patients which ADHD medications are right for them without any input from the actual doctor who saw the actual patient and assessed their actual needs.
UPDATE: I just saw this child again for a final COVID test so that he could return to school. Still no symptoms.
Tested POSITIVE. Theoretically, he could have been in school all week spreading COVID. This child's mother stopped his spread and may have saved someone's life.
Neg COVID test on a vaccinated 6-year-old with recent exposure.
I told his mother that b/c he was vaxxed and negative he could go back to school.
She declined. She will keep him out & retest in 5 days because 'every transmission chain ends in a death.'
Lots of respect for her.
This healthy teenager from my community died today of
#COVID
. Her only preexisting condition was bring unvaccinated. Thanks to
@michelegiletv
and her father for speaking out about this preventable tragedy. Children are not supposed to die. Get vaccinated.
@JHowardBrainMD
Of course! Both vaccinated and boosted. I have yet to meet a pediatrician who did not vaccinate their own children (and most with kids too young applied for clinical trials).
Wyoming is the second state to certify its 2020 election results:
Trump 193,559 (69.9%)
Biden 73,491 (26.6%)
That's a 2.9 point margin swing against Trump vs. 2016 and a 8.2% increase in votes cast. ?
There is a large body of evidence that getting your booster vaccine is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and your community from Omicron.
#ThisIsOurShot
My boys are boosted! The CDC approved the Pfizer COVID-19 booster shot for kids ages 12-15. I'm relieved Luke and Paul now have the highest level of protection they can get against the Omicron variant.
Todays list of positive COVID cases in our office. The last time this list was blank was almost two months ago. Cautiously optimistic that the worst is behind us.
It is my obligation as a pediatrician who cares for sick children to make sure that I am vaccinated to protect my patients and my community. I salute the vast majority of my colleagues at
@chocchildrens
who are fully vaccinated and have dedicated their lives to the health of kids
As a mother to a medically fragile child who has been hospitalized at
@chocchildrens
hospital & attends clinics at their facility, I am outraged anti-vaxxers are holding a protest at their hospital. Risking the lives of our most vulnerable children.
@RX_forLiberty
- you’re scum.
Good morning to
@BlueShieldCA
. I hate that our healthcare system has boiled down to me tweeting at you to get help for my patients, but, after speaking to 4 different people in 4 departments this morning, I thought this was the only way.
Sometimes this platform can be tough, but it is so heartwarming to see thousands of people advocating for the healthcare of a little baby. Because of all of you, we are a little closer to keeping my patient healthy and thriving 🙏🙏🙏
My wife made fresh homemade pasta tonight for the first time using a pasta making machine that we received for our wedding.
Our wedding was 20 years ago.
There are some good things about this quarantine.
#onegoodthing
There's a virus in the world today -- it's political extremists attacking science, vaccines and masks that keep us safe.
@CMA_Docs
is leading
#WearAMaskCA
to say NO MORE to anti-science zealots endangering California's children, parents and future.
25 years ago today we met at a party in Washington, DC and fell in love.
Today we are shopping for prunes at our suburban California Costco.
Who said romance is dead?
So we initially visited the office of
@RepSantosNY03
as a joke, but his staff invited us in, offered us snacks and listened to us as we discussed ways that Congress can help keep kids safe online. Advocacy can happen even when you least expect it.
