OTD 1865, Abraham Lincoln died. I'd like to think 10 yrs writing Team of Rivals, "living with" his humanity, empathy, resilience, humility & humor have made me a better person. Leo Tolstoy said Lincoln set the bar for leadership: his supremacy was the greatness of his character.

You gain strength, courage & confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do, Eleanor Roosevelt said. Ruth Bader Ginsburg did that & so much more. Bold, brave, trailblazing, empathetic—a hero for all.

Anniversaries can spark action. The celebration of the VRA should ignite a renewed fight today. As LBJ said: "This right to vote is the basic right without which all others are meaningless. It gives people, people as individuals, control over their own destinies.” @Morning_Joe

Experience matters, but even more so, we should be looking at our candidates' character, temperament, vision, judgment & teamwork.

Wow! Two of my lifetime heroes are now in the Hall of Fame—Gil Hodges and @davidortiz . Both inspiring and beloved leaders who demonstrated an ambition for their teams and their fans greater than for themselves. #MLB #History #RedSox #Dodgers

After years of "living with" Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis brilliantly brought him to life. @nytimes perfectly captures his performance & career

Thank you @MajorCBS @CBSSunday . This is a defining yet complex time in our history. A crucial point to remember: We've been through tough times before—Revolution, Civil War, Depression, WWII, & we came through even stronger. History provides perspective & lessons. It gives hope.
