To everyone gagging for a private insurance based system in the UK, may I refer you to this post by @EPotterMD. Having worked with the American healthcare market and American insurers in the pre-COVID world, I can tell you from first hand experience that this is not an isolated incident. The NHS needs a lot of work (so, so much work) to be better, and there are ways that it can (and should) be improved, but at the very least, it doesn’t actively incentivise denying care to boost profit margins. In a private insurance-based system, every decision about your health isn’t just about what’s medically necessary - it’s about what’s profitable. It’s about how many hoops they can make you jump through before you give up. It’s about how much they can extract from you before you become uninsurable. Ask yourself: do you really want a system where a surgeon is called out of theatre mid-operation just to beg an insurance company to let a patient stay in hospital overnight - only to be denied? Do you want a system where insurers send legal threats to doctors who speak out about it? Because that’s the reality. That’s what’s waiting at the end of the road if the NHS is dismantled in favour of an American-style system. If your answer is still yes, just be honest about what you really value - because it clearly isn’t patient care.
