Although motherless and fatherless by 12, God has been faithful to me and I have lived in His goodness. So as I celebrate 50 years of life today, I would be remiss if I did not thank Him for healing my broken heart, ordering my steps, lighting my path, & expanding my territory.
I grew up in the housing projects on public assistance, but it didn’t mean that I wasn’t capable or worthy of high-quality instruction. — There is a great deal of potential in our children. Let us not allow poverty to distort how we view the children we are charged to serve.
Today, I celebrate 47 years of life and the pursuit of excellence. Thank you to everyone who has poured encouragement and support into my life. 🎂🎂🎂

I was raised in abject poverty. I distinctly recall being teased for having nothing. But do you know what is more powerful than poverty? Equitable access to a high-quality schooling experience. —A note to my K-12 teachers: Thank you. You changed the trajectory of my life.
This PreK scholar in Osceola, Arkansas is proof positive that early literacy is about exposure and equitable access. She knows every word from our Dolch Sight Word Kit. — I couldn’t keep up with her fluency 💨.

I grew up in abject poverty, without either parent, but I knew that education was the great equalizer.
We must do everything possible to protect public education. While it doesn’t guarantee outcomes, it certainly does provide opportunities.
This little fellow, in South Carolina, couldn’t believe that the author of his reading textbook and supplemental resources was actually in his school. — It’s an honor to be recognized by children as an academician.

School improvement has been made to be more difficult than it has to be. — The true unit of change is a classroom characterized by access to instruction of the highest quality.

I was so poor as a young person that my high school science teacher, Mr. Tripodo, paid for me to go to my senior prom in 1991. Thank you Mr. Tripodo, you are the reason why I became a teacher.

Meeting our students where they are DOES NOT mean watering down cognitive demand. It means knowing what they need and ensuring that they get it.

@ScholasticEd
As you know, I am the lead author of a reading program published by Scholastic. Today, I received a shipment of the program. My testimony is proof that poverty can never be thought of as the predictor of individual success. Access is far more important than any other factor.
Although I grew up in abject poverty & slept on the floor of my grandmother’s living room from age 12-17, I was convinced, even then, that access to a high quality education could change my life’s trajectory. The education that we produce for children must be consumption worthy.
So very excited to deliver a keynote speech
@NABSE_org
that has the potential to impact millions of children nationwide. Thank you to my partners
@ScholasticEd
@NabsePresident
for making is possible.
Met this middle school student who was confident & conversant in the academic language of the science standard under study. I asked him to step into the hallway to talk to me in front of the instructional leaders in the building. He said, “sure.” Blew us away‼️
#equitableaccess
How long are we going to unpack the same finite number of standards? Schools need instructional resources with the standards already carefully disaggregated.
I grew up in abject poverty without either parent, but I had teachers and school leaders who ensured that I received a top-notch education worthy of consumption.
I was invited to read a book, just before scheduled nap time, to a group of 3-year-old pre-K students in Washington, DC last week. Shortly after I walked in, a little girl asked me, “Are you the President?”
If you have ever heard me speak about my upbringing, you know that I was orphaned and slept on the floor of my grandmother’s living room floor from age 12-17. I drove by that house today to thank God.
Never allow someone to tell you what you can accomplish. Your responsibility is to work hard, believe, and walk right into your purpose with your head up.
I have taken a great deal of photos in my career, but this one speaks to my purpose in life...Ensuring equitable access to instruction of the highest quality for all children... Underperformance is not about zip code...it’s about the instruction in the zip code.
I know it’s summer, but there is no substitute for small group instruction. The information we get from whole group helps us to provide targeted support and acceleration for our pupils.

When I walked into his classroom, this first grader said to me unsolicited, “Would you like me to tell you what we are doing? I can explain it to you if you want. Listen carefully to him, he did just that.

Kai is one year old and knows letter names, numbers, colors, and animals. — Literacy must begin in the home. Parents and educators must be partners in educating our children.

There is one thing of which I am certain. — If we give children access to quality, instruction, they will both meet and exceed expectations ‼️‼️‼️

A group of children saw me in the hallway and one of them said, "That's Dr. Seuss." This little guy immediately corrected his classmate, saying, "No, that's Dr. Dickey." -- And proceeded to shake my hand and introduce himself.
#SuperProudMoment
People always ask me, “Dr. Dickey, do you ever take just a moment for yourself?” Well, this week, I did. I attended the US Open in NYC and totally unplugged. It was amazing to just take it all in, get some rest, and enjoy the game.

When your RTI pyramid is inverted, you have to push a small number of practices into every classroom, grade, and discipline. You don’t have enough adults to “pull out” every student who needs support.
Books give children equitable access to mirrors (consistent opportunities to see themselves represented in print) and windows (consistent opportunities to learn about the world around them).
In honor of all of the amazing teachers who love, educate, and support our nation’s pupils, I am posting a picture from my inaugural years as a high school English literature teacher in Baltimore County.

There is one thing that I am certain of.—-When our children have equitable access to high-quality instruction taught by folks who possess deep conceptual understanding of content, both the opportunity and achievement gap will close and remain closed.

I have adopted a group of 3-year-old PreK students in Washington, DC. I cannot wait to see them become avid readers. They are already great listeners‼️

Wait, “Am I copying answers from a kindergartener?” —- Nah. He was just showing me how to associate letter names with letter sounds 😄. — Thanks Principal Hutchinson and William Wells Elementary for the invitation.
We are so proud to announce our soon to be released k-2 children’s book series called Dr. Dickey’s Decodables. This collection of culturally responsive texts is comprised of 90 books aligned with the principles of the art & science of teaching reading. Stay tuned‼️‼️‼️
The objective is the springboard for access to rigorous instruction. In the absence of a performance-based objective, the quality of the subsequent instruction is in jeopardy of contributing to diminished returns.

I had one of the most moving experiences in my career today in Arizona — An 8th grader values my literacy work so much that he has given me the honor of being his screensaver. I have never won an award for my contribution to public ed, but this sure does feel like one.

Our new literacy kit contains: the 44 phonemes; the 144 graphemes necessary to decode fluently plus the 30 most commonly used prefixes, roots, & suffixes necessary to create meaning fluently. When students decode & create meaning fluently, they will read at or above expectations.
I started with nothing and nobody, but I started. — Moral of the Story: Never look down upon someone because you never know what God has stored up for them.
How amazing it is to have found my purpose. — Helping children become better readers, writers, thinkers, and problem solvers.

Literacy development is a national imperative. If we don’t equip our children with the knowledge, language, and skills they need to reach the proficiency finish line and beyond, who will?

#eradicatingthegap
There is one thing that I know. — Our children can do anything to which they put their minds. — Our job is to produce teaching and learning experiences that both engage and challenge them intellectually.

Although I was raised in abject poverty without the basic necessities, my public school teachers gave me access to a world class education! Today, I salute the teachers and school leaders who stood in the gap for me! You changed my life’s trajectory!

Premiered our NEW PreK Decodable Books with a group of 3 and 4-year-olds today in Wilmington, North Carolina. My small group and I had an absolute BLAST 🚀🚀🚀. I flew in to do the Dialogic Reading Activity myself.

After a series of delays, a no-show pilot, and a hop from American to Delta, I made it North Carolina. After all of these trials, I promise you I will be in rare form in the AM.

Today in Alabama, every single question that I asked this second grader about general academic language, she answered without hesitation and with extreme confidence. The exchange brought me to tears. Don’t tell me what our children cannot do. Access + Mastery = Transfer.
