Great post by Lou! And glad I was right with my approximation! 😉
Over 72 holes, what are the chances a 5-index amateur will beat Tiger Woods on at least one hole? SHORT ANSWER: It’s very likely - under reasonable assumptions, around 81%. BACKGROUND: Last night @DodoMolinari texted me that his 5-index friend thought they had no chance of ever beating Tiger on a single hole over a four-round (72-hole) match. Dodo believed the amateur was a big favorite and asked me if we could run some numbers to try to estimate the actual probabilities. We assumed they played a typical member course from the back tees, about 6,775 yards, with a 73.7 course rating and a 130 slope. For context, a 5-index would get 7 strokes on this course. I crunched numbers for two scenarios. SCENARIO 1: ▶️Tiger averages 61 per round ▶️Amateur averages 84 per round ▶️This scenario is generous to Tiger and tough on the amateur. ▶️Even then, the 5-index wins at least one hole about 63% of the time. SCENARIO 2: ▶️Tiger averages 63 per round ▶️Amateur averages 82 per round ▶️This scenario is more realistic. ▶️Under these conditions, the 5-index wins at least one hole about 81% of the time. CONCLUSION: Even if Tiger plays incredibly well and the amateur underperforms, the amateur still has a decent chance (over half) of winning at least one hole. With more realistic assumptions, that chance is over 80%. For all my math nerd friends, the post below has the detailed assumptions and number crunching for scenario 1. 👇👇👇

@gyhpod @MyGolfSpy @PuttView @GolfersJournal That’s not correct. I always said (as I was first shown by @MarkBroadie years ago) that from short range is much more important to be closer to the hole than having an uphill putts. ShotLink data backs it up!
