cases despite being one of the worst-affected countries outside China. How'd they do it?
1. NOT with citywide lockdowns
2. Free, fast (10 min) drive thru testing (results within hrs)
3. Use public facilities as treatment ctrs
Gutted. A kind person, a stellar vaccine scientist, a "towering HIV prevention research leader," someone who dedicated her life to ending the HIV pandemic, has died of Covid-19. Prof. Gita Ramjee was Chief Specialist Scientist + Director of the South African Medical Research...
The British govt is saying let the virus spread so 60% of Brits become infected and herd immunity is reached. But that means:
- 39.6 million infected
- 5.5 million hospitalized with severe disease
- 2 million critically ill
-277,000 deaths
No other country is suggesting this
"He was taken to a bunker and he's hiding in a bunker and embarrassed that people know that. So what does he have to do. He has to stick police on peaceful protesters so he can make a big show of being the little big man walking to a closed down church." Anderson Cooper

This Norwegian university is recommending overseas students return to Norway. The guidance "also applies for countries with poorly developed collective infrastructure, for example the USA..."
Public health Dr here. If you have epidemiologist in your bio, or if you were "involved with Ebola," whatever that means, can you stop tweeting about coronavirus in all caps with alarm bell emojis?
Cuz if you know anything about public health you know inciting panic is unhelpful
Performative panic is worrying about the coronavirus while refusing to get your flu shot
(flu killed an estimated 61,000 people in the US during the 2017-2018 flu season and sickened 45 million Americans)
Spanish flu named bc Spain was neutral during WWI and therefore didn't censor news of pandemic. Zika is the name of a forest. Ebola the name of a river erroneously thought to be close to the first outbreak.
@WHO
now advises AGAINST geographic names for new pathogens. Stop this.
Spanish Flu. West Nile Virus. Zika. Ebola. All named for places.
Before the media’s fake outrage, even CNN called it “Chinese Coronavirus.”
Those trying to divide us must stop rooting for America to fail and give Americans real info they need to get through the crisis.

My lips are "too shiny," my eyebrows "look like they're darker than they should be," and I "dress like a teenager," according to the last hour's fan mail. But thank you for watching my epidemiologic analysis on CNN this morning.
If you are a woman who emails/DMs me to commend my epidemiologic analysis and my communications research, but to criticize my looks, know that I am saving your messages for a future project about women as perpetrators and defenders of the patriarchy.
DMX's manager, Nakia Walker, spoke to the NYT and Buzzfeed today and said he is "still in the same condition in a vegetative state [with] lung and brain failure and no brain activity." 💔
Occam's Razor is a principle that says of multiple explanations of varied complexity, the simplest one is most likely to be correct. So basically you don't understand Occam's Razor or that wanking at work is wrong.
When Occam's Razor suggests someone humiliated himself through a combo of technological error, pandemic circumstances, bad judgment, & bad luck, it seems like we should react w/ empathy, politeness, & forgiveness, as we would want to be treated, rather than punitive mockery
New Zealand's First Leader puts it bluntly to a person denying that a virus causes Covid-19:
"Sit down, sit down, sit down. We've got someone who obviously got an education in America. 220,000 people have died in the United States..."

At the site of a motorcycle accident, I said "I'm a Dr" and approached the motorcyclist on the ground and this guy said "I've done first aid training" and proceeded to try to get the injured cyclist TO MOVE.
You ever get exhausted of trying to avoid this damn virus; of doing multiple risk calculations every single day so you can get groceries, walk the dog, and not get infected; and then wonder what exactly is going on in the minds of those who are cavalier and not worried?
That Georgia high school where 2 students said they were suspended for sharing photos of packed hallways...6 students and 3 staff members who were in that school last week have tested positive for COVID-19.
1 wedding with 55 ppl led to Covid outbreaks in the community, at a LT care facility 100 miles away + a correctional facility 200 miles away.
177 cases, 7 hospitalizations + 7 deaths were linked to the wedding.
No one who died had attended the wedding.
Federal agents guard Dr. Fauci's home so "Nobody tries to break in and, as Steve Bannon would like, have somebody behead me."
I don't have enough available characters to express my disgust and anger about the threats to scientists and healthcare workers

Taiwan, a country of 23.7 million people, has had 513 Covid-19 cases, 7 deaths from the disease, and no locally-acquired infections since April 12.
It's the only developed economy in the world expected to see growth this year.
RIP Lorenza Guerrero, a nurse who worked at McAllen Medical Center for nearly 50 years, treating victims of sexual assault.
5 nurses died from Covid-19 in Hidalgo County, Texas, and 6 doctors are in isolation because they are infected.
Minneapolis: A photographer was shot in the eye.
Washington, D.C.: Protesters struck a journalist with his own microphone.
Louisville: A reporter was hit by a pepper ball on live television by an officer who appeared to be aiming at her.
No. That's not what the CDC guidance says. It suggests that reinfection within 3 months is unlikely and that immunity lasts for at least 3 months (not up to 3 months)
"three teachers went above and beyond in taking precautions against the spread of the virus while teaching in the same room, but all three contracted COVID-19."
One of the teachers died.

the first thing I did when the presidency was called is text and call my family members who do not agree and tell them I love them and am here for them.

. Call your family today. Happy Sunday. ♥️
70,000 Americans have died from Covid-19. More died in one day than in the 9/11 attacks. Why isn't the flag flying at half-mast at the WH? Why aren't our leaders leading us in a collective mourning and remembering of the dead?
Me: I'm terribly sorry I can't do a video call today I'm exhausted and my internet is crap so I do hope it's ok if I keep the video off and just join by audio I'm...
Male colleagues: Hey everyone. I'm not doing video today.
Pfizer has said “There are no data to demonstrate that protection after the first dose is sustained after 21 days.”
So why are thousands of Brits - elderly and vulnerable - who are due their 2nd vaccine next week, having their vaccination appointments CANCELED?
I'm sad for me because she was a beautiful person to know, and I can't begin to process how this is for her family. But this is also a massive loss for science. People like Gita get shit done. They do the behind the scenes grunt work, the decades of activism and advocacy + trials

Sandy Hook could have been a "teachable moment" if we had shown photos of the children's bullet-addled bodies or their autopsies. That's the perspective of a trauma surgeon speaking on NPR now. Is that what it will take? Thoughts?
Women scientists sending me emails saying I "don't look like a scientist" & I don't appear "professional": STOP. I delete your emails after reading the first line, & I'm no longer sending reading lists of feminist critical theory texts to help you examine your misogyny + racism.
This week a friend tripped while taking a short walk, hit their head on the pavement, and died almost instantly. I'm still in shock. Nothing makes sense. They were a brilliant scientist and a kind person.
This is what anti-Black racism looks like: benefiting from the work of Black civil rights activists, wilfully misunderstanding how much Asian Americans gained from affirmative action, and throwing Black students under the bus because you don't know your history.
Meanwhile a British politician wrote an op-ed last week saying “We have had the scare of SARs, bird flu, Ebola and of course AIDS. None proved as devastating as feared."
Do politicians not know that the ongoing HIV epidemic has killed 32+ million people globally?
This is bizarre to me given we don't know how long immunity to the virus persists.
Also, I get the idea of cocooning (forming circles of immunity around the most vulnerable) but you do that in a controlled way with vaccines. This is very different.
On his 2nd day in office, Trump signed an executive order for a federal hiring freeze. It left open 700 vacancies at the CDC, including programs supporting emergency readiness and infectious disease control.
All these headlines about Covid-19 survivors being immune to reinfection must mean I missed the peer-reviewed papers demonstrating this. Please drop links to papers asserting survivors are immune
The Covid test positivity rate in the US is 9.5%. That's nearly double the rate the WHO says should lead regions to consider not lifting containment measures and not reopening schools and some businesses. I'm scared to think how much worse this could get over the next 73 days.
Remember when Dallas PD wrongly suspected this man of perpertrating a mass shooting? Mark Hughes had to close the family business and move his wife and kids to a hotel. I wrote his story in 2016. Now, Mark is filing a lawsuit against Dallas PD...
The problem with public health is when you do your job right you make yourself seem obsolete. (I feel that's why we keep getting budgets cut.) Same applies here: if we do the right thing now (social distancing) the worst will be prevented +some will say it was all an overreaction
We don't need your heart to go out to these cities and states heavily hit by Covid-19, Dr. Birx. We need your tests, ventilators and N95 respirators to go out.
Public health experts are also worried about the epidemic of police brutality and the murders of black people - both of which are public health emergencies, Signed, a public health expert
Public health experts are worried that the mass protests in the U.S. could lead to a surge of new coronavirus cases. Police using tear gas and pepper spray causes people to tear up and cough, which could increase the risk of transmission.
