After the A's announced they were leaving Oakland, two fans set out to do something audacious: start a pro baseball team of their own. Incredibly, they pulled it off. For the @ringer , here’s my year of reporting on the wild rise of the @OaklandBallers :

All of Las Vegas should read this. HORRIBLE deal for NV. Of note: it includes a "state-of-the-art" clause, which obliges NV to fund unspecified future stadium upgrades—or else. This is the same clause Stan Kroenke used to steal the Rams away from St. Louis

“We represent one of the last vestiges of the Sausalito that was. The Hill snobs have always fought the Wharf Rats, but I never thought they would go this far.” Another great essay on a totally wild chapter of California history from @AndrewChamings

We need more new parks like this in Oakland. Particularly on the waterfront. I can think of at least one good spot.

Did you know that San Francisco got *another* new park today? We did! The old Francisco Reservoir in Russian Hill is now Francisco Park!

Maybe it’s naive of me, maybe it’s because I’ve been writing and thinking about and experiencing the repercussions of all this for so long, but the main thing I’ve been feeling as the owners approach their vote and as I’ve been processing Fisher’s comments is disgust.

Seems LOTS of people misremember why the Raiders left Oakland. @LibbySchaaf didn't force em out. As @RattoIndy once wrote, they left bc Oakland "wouldn't cheerfully play the NFL's most popular form of extortion: the city-pays-for-the-stadium-and-the-team-takes-the-money dodge."

My wife says Oliver (two months) is too young to bring to #UniteTheBay at the Coli today—so we are showing support from afar. You can’t tell, but I’m fairly certain that as this was taken, Oliver burbled quietly, “John Fisher, sell the team.” #Athletics #SellTheTeam

I'm damn grateful to @RileyMcAtee for his work with me on this. Without him it would look much different and would be much worse. He's one of the best editors in the business.

There are 553 sports teams in U.S.-based leagues averaging more fans per home game than the Oakland Athletics right now On that list are three Indoor Football League franchises, two college wrestling teams, a professional women’s volleyball team, and a whole lot more 👇

The story matters for reasons that transcend Oakland. It’s not just about how this specific group of fans fought to keep their team, but the exploitative nature of the relationship between team owners and tax payers everywhere, how fan bases in other parts of the world have

Was on a bike ride and had to snap this shot. Wild there might be a baseball stadium here one day. Gotta admit it would be pretty sweet

This. Except the "loose confederation" of private businesses in fact enjoys federal license to operate like a drug cartel.

@EireannDolan More proof MLB is a loose confederacy of 30 private businesses. If there was an industry standard, the other owners would’ve demanded more from John Fisher, who continues to embarrass his brethren.

Reminder that Camden Yards was funded entirely by Maryland taxpayers and that Angelos just secured another $600 million in public funds to put towards stadium improvements that will likely only serve to further increase the Orioles’s value, which is currently ~$1.7b
