You can be articulate and academic and still have high support needs for everyday living. This is another autism myth,those who can advocate don’t also have high support needs. This is why autism is described as a spectrum and individuals have spiky profiles.
My son attended a failing school,couldn’t go to his choice of sixth form because of costs, he has had to fight an ableist education system, he is from a single parent home low income. Obtained a 1st degree & today he got a distinction in his MSc. No Eton education, no privileges.
My son is designing an app part of his MSc,to support autistic children’s language development & my daughter who is illustrating the art work. The best bit, not only the support to one another, but this is two autistic people designing for autistic people
Greg I suggest you and your wife get some therapy? Talk your feeling through, not in a public space, and understand your tragic narrative is harmful to your child.
There’s more to this amazing young man. He supported his autistic sister at school leaving his own lesson.He supported his disabled grandad,from the age of 12 , he worked nights at one point because money was tight, he was diagnosed autistic at 20. He nearly gave up Uni He didn’t
My son ‘forgot’ his mate was getting married today, he remembered on Tuesday night. So in 3 days I’ve managed to get him suited and booted in a sensory okay suit and shoes, take up the trousers etc, and this my friends is a miracle on par with turning water into wine. 🙂
My daughter was diagnosed with Postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) yesterday. This is having a major impact on her life. Wouldn’t it be good if there was diagnostic path way? Pots, Hypermobility, EDS,Chronic Fatigue, MCAS all with no diagnostic pathway, why is this?
When he applied to unis he applied to Red Brick ones, his school had little ambition & suggested he had a fail safe of one that ‘was less ambitious’ he got offered a place at all unis he applied for. The school was in special measures, his teaching was poor. He worked hard.
Interested to hear how many autistic adults find everyday life over whelming, taking into account a spiky profile eg have a degree/ can’t make a doctors appoint /cook tea etc & need support to cope, rather then coaching to teach them to do?
Can we stop equating Learning Disability and Autism. You can be NeuroTypical and have a LD you can be Neurodivergent and have a LD. Autism and LD do not go hand in hand. It has caused much confusion over the years to equate the two, So please stop.
High support needs can include though not exclusive, keeping one self safe. Needing one:one support when travelling, or leaving the house. Support to remember to eat, support to dress appropriately, to pay bills etc you can be articulate and academic and still need support.

Student accommodation is considered temporary it’s why council tax is not paid by students, and parents can get a discount. Students are still dependent on parents (undergraduate) until 25 for student loan assessment
@draevans
Situational mutism. It becomes physically impossible to speak. That does not mean one can’t speak. But at that moment, in that space and time, it is impossible to speak.
@stuartasterling
This just came up on my time line. A beautiful child, I’m sorry for your loss, and wanted you to know that there are many people thinking of you and willing you to be able to breathe again. Sending love from my family to yours x
Every time I meet a Senco , I think what actually are they trained to do? Certainly ( I mean the ones I have met ) have no idea re Autism/ ADHD.
They appear at all costs to be to defend the school and it’s lack of inclusion. This I hope is just my experience.
@erickalenze
I cannot concentrate unless I doodle. But teachers in the past had no understanding of students like me, it seems nothing has changed.I became a teacher to support students like me, because of the teachers who said “ I’ve never seen a fidget help a student to be more focused’
What if there was support for autistic/ adhd people to cope with the admin in life? Arranging docs appointments paying bills etc? Ideally what would this support look like and how would it be accessible?
Observations - not putting heating on in house, my bathroom is now getting a mould issue, condensation on windows is much worse and house feels damp… my house is 100 yrs old. So I’m wondering if no heating is a false economy…
@KrystalVittles
@JacquelineBolto
@ipswich_library
My dads library would deliver books to him, based on notes that were past back and forth with the delivery. They would order books in they thought he'd like. He could not get to the library, occasionally they'd visit him. When he died they all attended his celebration of life.
How many parents at some point in their families journeys have been called an anxious parent? Especially in the early years when you knew… but the medical profession couldn’t see?
Just had my gas electric bill, and realised I can’t really afford to have the heating on… but no heating means mouldy house. Two peeps with severe mould allergies. 2023, what a time to be alive! 🫤
Say you don’t know about autism without saying
Me : we need to know how long /what’s happening / and why the assessment is at the house as this will cause massive disruption as it’s personal space
Them : don’t worry the assessor is really bubbly personality so it will be fine 🫤
I have recently been in situations were I’ve felt someone’s mental health is on very shaky ground and they need professional support immediately. It just isn’t available is it?
Sometimes I read threads from teachers/ school leaders re why they do not like reasonable adjustments, sighs, doesn’t stop there it continues into university education. Reasonable adjustments are not up for debate, just because you don’t understand them🫤
What concerns me with this is those with disabilities are never considered. Using a wheelchair, having limited vision, problems with your balance? I’m all for re wilding but I’m also aware of accessibility issues
We need to screen children for dyslexia & dyscalculia in school. I wonder how many students who worked very hard to get disappointing exam results will go on to be diagnosed if they make it to higher education ?
@alisonpearsonSW
Have we have slept walked into a neoliberal dystopia? believing that peoples worth is gaged by their financial productivity, however ‘the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members'. You have a beautiful daughter, her value immeasurable
Pain clinics and autism. They don’t work do they? They see pain through a NT lens, bring in therapies like CBT etc and refuse to see that this is inappropriate. They also do not recognise that pain may be experienced differently if the patient is autistic.
My daughter could not attend lectures at uni today because a lift, the only lift was not in working order and has not been since Monday. No other provision offered, no notice given …Ableism. Disability discrimination.
I’ve just had a conversation with quite a senior person in SEND land for an LA and we can agree that there is little suitable provision for those who are 16+ autistic & academic
My daughter is making Clementine Cake
@Nigella_Lawson
She had an upset and baking is calming her down. Not sure the state of the kitchen will calm me down, but worth it for Clementine Cake.
Those looking to cut benefits for the disabled/ remember no one is immune to disability no one. Disability comes in many many forms and different times in peoples lives from birth to death. So you could need those benefits too one day.
@The_Gog
This why it is important support can come from other avenues, if someone believes in you it helps. We need more young people to be believed in by society no matter what their circumstances.
How random is this I’ve just found a message on Facebook someone has found my family’s wartime photos dumped , managed to trace me and is going to reunite me with them. That’s some detective work.
family member aged 8 assessed as having an IQ of147 However in stressful conditions they become mute. Why do professionals they see equate non verbal communication with learning disabilities? Which leads me to;why do they think anyone with a learning disability needs baby talk?
I work with families who’s children have been diagnosed autistic/ adhd /or both & then I watch the dawning that they to are autistic/adhd/or both, & then they recount tales of grandparents/their parents/ siblings etc….it’s like one chapter read and then that book unfolds …🤔
Has there been any research into the negative affects towards mental health, that PIP and other DWP assessments have, not only the person applying for benefits but also carers/ supporters/ family members?
Whilst I’ve got your attention. Many young people in the education system are struggling, hypermobility/ND in constant pain which is over looked please like and follow this tiny charity
@SEDSConnective
I’d be very grateful.There are many barriers to learning that need overcoming
If you have a job and you are a carer try asking for time off for families appointments and see how that goes down with your employer….. now get a chronic illness and ask for reasonable adjustments …. Now see how long it takes for any job to become untenable…
I’m totally confused by Truss and Sunak’s constant reference to ensure policies ‘get back on track’ They do know it’s there government that’s been in power for 12 yrs? They are admitting constantly that the Tories policies have failed.
University lectures if you are marking autistic students down when doing presentations etc. for not making eye contact shame on you. Stop it. Stop it now.
My daughter is a wheelchair user she also can walk. When she gets out of her wheelchair I like to say to those onlookers ( you know the ones) ‘it’s a miracle ‘ 🤣
If men experienced the menopause do we think they’d be happy to have a chat about how it makes them feel, rather then taking medication that relieves symptoms? Back to hysterical women as a theory? Really are going backwards aren’t we?
PIP makes no sense depending on the interviewer the points change. The persons needs remain the same, but the points change up and down at the whim of the interviewer; the medical information is constant.
@minifingerz
Oh yes this has started. The disingenuous and less nuanced amongst us don’t see that actually some have to work twice as hard and still not get power or privilege handed to them. It was tho just a proud mum tweet that has taken off.
Things that an autistic adult gets no support with sleep conditions, pain management, mental health support, chronic illness support…. Feel free to add to the list
Just a phone call from hospital to give reassurance that hospital passport etc has been read and staff are informed re needs
#autism
. Re loved one’s operation on Friday. Never had this before, very pleased
@ShihabSJoi
@JuliaHB1
I can spot the difference, one has a complete understanding of budgeting correctly and the importance of nutritional value and one is a patronising Tory MP
read through my son's PIP refusal appears to be because he has A levels. on every paragraph it actually states "despite having being diagnosed with autism he has good A levels"
So you can't be disabled and have an education? Is this serious?
#Autism
#autismawareness
Reasonable adjustments: daughter is currently doing all her uni assignments in bed. Unable to get up. Too ill. She also is autistic Her reasonable adjustment a two week extension on work & she is allowed to miss a % of lectures without being penalised. Hardly giving her an edge.
My daughter is not so well and decisions have to made this weekend re her ability to stay at uni this year. So pictures of kittens will be very much appreciated or any other nice thing
Things I did not plan in my life having a disabled parent, becoming a sandwich carer/ carer becoming a single parent, losing a home, having children with chronic illness/disability/ autism/adhd. Being hit by a car, long covid, cancer scares & the list goes on point is 1/
There is little/no support for Autistic, ADHD people as they leave school, higher education etc. Employment support, social welfare support, etc just is not there. The environment in school, that leads to school refusal, societally is still there. So we are setting people to fail
@AutisticSpinstr
You can also be situationally mute (selective but it’s not selective is it? there is no choice ) and in an adult that really winds people up. So not understood as profound anxiety.
I’m beginning to think a lot of teachers need training in what executive dysfunction means one issue is ‘trouble organizing materials and setting schedules.’ Losing keys, forgetting pens, tip of the iceberg. Getting derailed half way through an action is common, so the intention
I’ve been offered recently several paid positions, now here’s the quandary, I need the money, I want to do them, they are well paid so that’s great… I’m also a carer… if you know you know.
So my daughter is going to have to take a leave of absence from her academic studies, she is just too unwell. The financial implications are crazy. Low income families are hard enough hit by attempting to put their children through education, this is literally eye watering debt.
So it’s official I have been awarded a MA in ASC studies with Merit. As I had no supervisor for the last few months a pandemic, dyslexia, plus normal family disasters I’m proud of the Merit
@NicciMidgley
That’s really good to hear and I’m really pleased your child is having an okay time. We need more schools to be understanding of autistic needs. Spread your good practice because as you you can see from the responses to this tweet it’s really needed.
some good news, all I can say is that the teams that supported us at hospital yesterday where absolutely legend. The understanding that becoming non verbal does not equate to lack of intellectual ability, drugs reacting differently pain, responses being different etc..
#autism
Those families with adult children who have ‘hidden disabilities’ ( clearly not hidden because they’ve noticed!) when you try to advocate for them in medical situations are you treated as though you are the problem?
@Jo_Frost
@JodieSmitten
Are you serious? Overcoming autism, wait I will just let my family and my students know, that with a few strategies I can transform their neurological differences and it’s all sorted. What would help is less of this ableist, ill informed rhetoric . I’d enjoy life a lot more then
Today is the day 6 yrs ago I said goodbye to my Dad. For the last 10 years of his life I became his carer, and it was an absolute privilege to get to know him, caring was a different relationship to what we’d experienced before, when he left, he left a big gap in my life.
@Jo_Frost
Could you please talk and discuss this with neurodivergent professionals / children/ students - this conversation without an understand of neurodivergent needs is damaging. If school was more Neurodivergent friendly it would also be of benefit to NT children too.
@DrFrancesRyan
Shall we just open the poor houses and be done with it? ‘ languishing on benefits’…..from a government more corrupt and liable to feather their own nests with public money, whilst keeping a thin veneer of respectability…Sighs.
Never underestimate the power of a mobility aid. It is not giving up to use a wheelchair.. especially if you have a chronic illness. iI is embracing mobility and your right to inclusion.
@Diana_FI
@jessphillips
If you earn £10 an hour there is a massive difference to earning £100 an hour. You still work hard, it’s not a mindset is inequality.
In some good news motability has awarded a grant so my D can get a wheelchair accessible van 🚐. Which means she can use her electric wheelchair when she gets it !!! Woop!
@Claire_R123
You may be hyperlexic and autistic. Be King and Queen of the written word, but not capable of living alone without support,or dyslexic. You may have a learning disability and autistic and not able to live alone without support. It is a spectrum and people have spiky profiles.
Is it me or is there more people who are NT on twitter (education) who are saying what ND children need?Whilst ignoring ND peoples lived experience, getting super defensive about what they see & they know? Would they presume to know what it’s like to be deaf or lose a limb etc?
Any training for teachers should be firmly based in listening and understanding the perspective of autistic pupils in school. It should be coproduced with autistic pupils and teachers not an add on to other training. Coproduction/ listening / acting on that information.
teenage lads loitering outside B&M last eve, looking shifty, you know the type? woman in carpark-,accident with her scooter, potentially nasty (wasn’t but we didn’t know that) they ran a cross, picked her scooter up picked her up, checked she was okay, went back to loitering
There is such a lack of understanding from medical professionals that sensory issues can have such a major impact on how autistic people can receive basic medical care. It would not take much to understand this and change practices which would benefit all patients.
@kelvmackenzie
‘No weekend work’ ha ha ha no paid weekend work, not all teachers get 13 weeks holidays and most go in unpaid. ( revision sessions, sorting out classrooms planning) I was paid until 3.30 stayed every night until 6pm. Even buying resources in your own time with your own money
@NorthPoleAnna
@maosbot
I've found out I was diagnoised with CFS in 2016... I found out yesterday by accessing my medical records. That's how little some of us are seen.
