To execute this style of play effectively, communication and simplicity are key. Everyone on the field must know: •Which gaps are being vacated and who is responsible for replacing them. •How to adjust their eyes to recognize new pressure keys.

We can’t afford to line up static against offensive lines that outweigh us. Letting them fire off the ball repeatedly will wear us down over the course of the game. That’s why we utilize movement, stunts, and slants with our defensive linemen.

This means many programs, including ones I’ve coached or played against, rely on smaller, quicker players who may lack one or more of these key traits. When facing run-heavy teams—which make up the majority of our opponents.
