Turkey’s desperate attempts to draw Western tourists. Note the implausible absence of anything/anyone Muslim and the hypocritical instrumentalization of everything secular which Erdogan has been systematically attacking - ballet, alcohol consumption, music, dance and, yes, women.
There was never a shred of evidence to support any of these charges, let alone an aggravated life imprisonment- which is what he was sentenced to today. The life of a beautiful soul has been ruined by one man, just because he could…

All these years, I have been struck with his civility, humbleness, kindness, and deep sense of justice. A man of deeds, and not much words, he would simply show up and do what needed to be done- support small grassroots NGOs, promote lesser known local artists,

find shelter for Kurdish earthquake victims, build bridges between Armenian and Turkish civil society activists, help Syrian refugees… Humbly, quietly, kindly. Always addressing everyone in the formal ‘you’ form, never pretending, presuming, boasting, assuming.
Then one day, for reasons still unknown, he attracted Erdogan’s attention. Rather, fury, wrath. Seemingly, a rich Turkish businessman engaged in daring peace and civic projects was too much to bear. The autocrat had to send a message to the rest of the business world.
The rest was a Kafkaesque tale. The autocrat got Kavala arrested in October 2017 and ordered prosecutors to come up with a reason. Kavala was accused of, alternately and simultaneously, being the mastermind behind the 2013 Gezi protests,

We lost one of the most beautiful towns of Turkey and the Middle East. A rare survivor of Ottoman cosmopolitanism, Antioch/Antakya was a true jewel with its unique architecture and diverse ethnic and religious communities. I am so sorry for your indescribable pain,
@borabinyousef
Antioch was literally the only city in the Levant that had peace. It watched over Aleppo, Damascus, Jerusalem, Beirut for the longest time. In one night, Antioch became hell. Journalists say they haven’t seen this much damage even in Syria and Ukraine.
It’s difficult and yet essential to communicate the meaning and implications of this decision. For Kavala, this effectively means life long solitary confinement. he will be able to see and talk over the phone with only immediate family and only once every 15 days. No more lawyers
Today, the Court of Cassation upheld Osman Kavala’s conviction to aggravated life imprisonment - as we await the result of Committee of Ministers infringement proceedings for Turkey’s non-compliance with two ECtHR rulings ordering his immediate release. Backlash par excellence.
In February,
@coe
Committee of Ministers had asked
@ECHR_CEDH
to decide whether Turkey is violating its judgment in the case of Kavala. Today, a Turkish court gave the answer by sentencing Kavala to life imprisonment. Now what, ECHR?

@salihro
For millions of Alevis in Turkey, including my family, hearing Kılıçdaroğlu utter these words is historic. Not only may „one of us“ become Turkey‘s first Alevi president, but he first embraces and then rises above his identity to uphold universal values. Priceless.
Kılıçdaroğlu is outperforming the expectations of even his longtime supporters. He continues to drive the agenda in Turkey’s presidential race. Today, he acknowledged that he belongs to a religious minority. More important, he asked voters to rise above identity politics. 👏
Tahir Elçi- one of Turkey’s prominent (Kurdish) human rights lawyers. Six years ago today, he was murdered in broad daylight. We don’t know who shot the bullet. But there is little doubt, if any, that it was a police officer - encouraged and enabled by impunity.
