(a thread 🧵)
yknow seeing all these indie games i remembered just how indie devs have seemed to have made much better games than a lot of aaa studios in recent years. over the course of my semester, i researched a bunch of stuff about indie development, here it is. (1/11)

SCP-9984-24 LOG:
Similar to the incidents of -14 (“Mouth”) and -21 (“Apple Bottom”), SCP-9984-24 manifested as a retroactive revision of several popular songs into the theme of the indie series “The A██ D███ C██”. Notable songs are included in the attached playlist.
everyone knows just how good indie games are. imagine where we'd be without such a thriving community of developers making these projects. i honestly think the industry would've eaten itself by now rehashing a billion sequels if not for games like these that broke ground. (2/11)
to put it short, indie development, from its early days up until now could be said to be where a lot of innovation and experimentation with games comes from these days! (3/11)
i mean ofc games just as innovative come from bigger developers, like for example half life or gta, but i feel like many indie games can go deeper in exploring game mechanics and themes that aaa games just can't. as new trends emerge, they permeate throughout the industry. (4/11)
it turns out, however, that indie game development is pretty unstable! (see chart) granted, this is for published solo developers, but it paints a grim picture. (5/11)

yesterday i was gonna post a funny drawing about how among all the kendrick drake beef videos was just digital circus but i never finished it so here’s the doodle of them arguing with pomni dissociating in the background
it kinda sucks how there's no real safety net for indie teams or individuals besides mayyybe incubation programs, but even then, it can be difficult to get signed under a big publishing company, both going into the process and working under them, (7/11)
i mean, that's why people go indie in the first place. but what can we do? i mean of course there's one big answer, game developer unions, especially seeing how sag-aftra played out (don't count me on that however), (8/11)
@MarioMelon64
@Xploshi
mods upon mods upon mods upon au’s upon au’s upon au’s upon mischaracterization and flanderization upon remixing songs into the void, basically a lot of the good content gets repeated over and over until you get sick of it even if it was really really good before
but maybe it's just difficult to fund projects and make money in such a saturated market. right now, even the most successful indie games are funded via crowdfunding (pizza tower, baldur's gate, cuphead, etc.) (9/11)
perhaps for now we should continue supporting game devs in what ways we can. maybe some time in the future, newer economic models of support will arise, and indie studios all over, not just for video games, will be more stable financially (11/11)
hell even some of those examples were partially funded via support from larger companies like xbox or ea. not every game can catch that lightning in a bottle, unfortunately, and not every game can be totally free from the influence of the industry giants. (10/11)
(‼️disclaimer: this thread was written as a remediation of a full 7 page essay, so please take with a grain of salt. do feel free to dispute though, i'm absolutely open to it.)
OH btw i recommend the book “handmade pixels” by jesper juuls, it was a great resource on analyzing indie games as a whole and really hammered in how the “indie spirit” can really differ from mainstream gaming
