🚨 Today is the day, and it’s been a long time coming! I am currently traveling back to Ukraine for my 2025 coverage but I have some major announcements in this thread! As I explain in the video, I will be working with @OffbeatResearch & @DylanBurns1776 in the coming year to help document Russia’s illegal invasion in new ways than I have before. This doesn’t mean that I will stop my regular coverage, this just adds to it!

@nonamenonutn No, only Russians get the block! It's always a possibility I get something wrong and I like people to challenge me.

I fully agree that AI can have good uses. I mean Algorithmic systems have been around longer than our current nomenclature of calling them AI. And I even mentioned that in personal use I've seen some benefit from controlled use of. So you are correct, the tech is not what I have an issue with, it is 100% the people pushing it. As, at least from what I have seen and my understanding, it is mostly major players with negative intentions pushing and publicly advocating for AI to replace everything. I do fear a world where everything can be replaced so easily with computer generated and manufactured content. in all departments: News, shows, movies, school classes, art, learning, etc. Instead of what it has the potential to be - things like helping to keep cyber attacks at bay! Admittedly, I have not looked into data around AI enhanced learning or what that would entail. If there is positives to that I would be open to have that thought process change. Getting News with AI though... I am more on the fence about. Maybe I am too paranoid but especial as I've grown as a researcher and journalist, I find those small details that often get overlooked in a story/article/testimony to trip a lot of people up. And don't worry about it! I like a back and forth with reasonable minds!

Members of the press are needed now more than ever. I have never felt more justified in trading my entire “normal life” to do this than I am in this moment.
The US has halted USAID funding for independent Ukrainian and Russian media, putting critical outlets at risk of closure Journalists warned this move weakens press freedom and aids Kremlin propaganda amid Russia's war

A few reasons. 1. The vast majority of those advocating for AI are not people interested in bettering people's lives through innovation or the few good applications it could have with people. 2. It is controlled algorithms that can easily be manipulated. The quick adoption of the younger generations for use in book summaries, homework, and research destroy the ever more necessary skills needed in this world. That of independent research, sinking time into learning and gaining the full context, and the pursuit of any creative endeavor. ask yourself. What is the point of learning to draw when you can ask an AI to do it for you? Why learn how to properly write a novel when your Robot can do it for you? Why learn photography when you can generate an AI image of the street in the most perfect weather conditions? All are much easier and appeal to those who have no talent or choose not to put in the work but want the recognition. 3. disinformation bot networks. It's now easier than ever to make fringe positions seem safe in the public eye. It can also generate something that could (and has) fooled people into believing false information. The scariest part is that will only grow more common and that's why I will use film half the time in my photojournalist work - A physical receipt. look, AI has some good applications in time saving measures. It can even be good in applications of voiceover work, as long as it is not taking an otherwise paid gig from a human. I use it in that way. But I would give it up in a heartbeat to have the vast negatives crushed.
