Urate crystals and cellulose fiber in wet mount. The cellulose is blue when parallel to the compensator plane (lambda), yellow when perpendicular. Urate is opposite. Simple!

Here is a simple trick to determine positive or negative birefringence: compare to cellulose fiber (shreds from tissue paper). Cellulose shows positive birefringence, like calcium pyrophosphate, unlike urate crystals. See photo below.

The proper description of this photo is "crystals under compensated polarized light, showing negative birefrengence consistent with urate crystals".

In this photo of a tophus wet mount, the crystals aligned with the compensator axis (4:30 to 10:30 o'clock) are yellow, those crossing the axis are blue = negative birefringence = urate crystals.
