After mornings of duck shooting and business, and a hearty lunch at three, Mrs Jervis prepares to host the societies of the weavers. Another round of cards, another dish of tea, a bit of music and a dance, and a turn about the room, until....“Eleven o’clock and all’s well!”

Mrs Jervis does not get up from the old tea table. Her fingers trace the paisley on her shawl, a present from Mr Jervis, embroidered by small hands in the distant land of Kashmir. For a moment, the two worlds touch. Another Christmas gone, she sighs. It is a sigh of contentment.

Fragrant boughs still scent the Dining Room. Their needles fall. Mrs Jervis brushes them from the table but some cling to her woven shawl. Visitors are reminded that our yuletide decorations will remain in situ until January 12th. Book here:

On World Aids Day we remember Dennis Severs and Simon Pettet (pictured), alongside over 40 million others who have died since the first cases were reported in 1981. Simon died aged 28 on 26th December 1993 and Dennis aged 51 on 27th December 1999.
