We believe the intermediate complexes in square brackets have a short lifetime due to their reactivity and are too fast to be observed in situ. We also performed EPR and did not observe any non-spin = 0 compounds!

We did attempt to synthesize the single phosphine ligand Ni(COD) complex, however we found only the bis(P2BCy4) Ni complex can be obtained.
