Why does the Premier League not have semi-automated offside yet like UCL? The simple answer. It's because of a complex mixture of patents + tech logistics. Now, the long answer. The tech that runs the semi automated offside (SAOT) has 2 main parts: ๐ hawk eye system โฝ๏ธ Chip-mounted ball. Hawk eye system is owned by a different company to the balls and the chip/sensor (snickometer). ๐ฅ๏ธ The chip tech is owned by Kinexon. The tech works with a chip inside the ball (snickometer chip: which determines precisely when the ball touches the player). The placement of that chip/sensor is patented to Adidas (not the chip itself). Basically, only Adidas balls work with it atm. Now, the EPL and most leagues, including the German league, do not use Adidas balls, so they can't even get the chip placed in their balls in the way it is for UEFA/FIFA competitions. The EPL uses Nike and will move to join La Liga and Serie A, who use Puma, from next season. So it is either Adidas would licence other ball companies or Puma & the likes find an alternative way to house chip. This is not easy in itself as there are regulations on ball weights, size, diameter, etc. I'm sure you've heard coaches saying, "This ball flies differently." There's another issue, though. All leagues gather data using different companies. Some providers do not also have access to the tech that can enable them to support the SAOT system. The PL hopes to use a company called Genius Sports that will install multiple cameras around the stadium to track the ball and players. Hopefully, we will see the system the PL wants to use soon .
Shambles we donโt have semi-automated offsides in the Premier League. Who does that failure lie with? Genuine question
