The Valentine's day count down continues and I am highlighting a personal facet of a scientific luminary, Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Against the wishes of his family, Cajal was resolved to marry Silveria Petra Josefa Fañanás García. She was his steadfast companion, and her role in his life underscores the profound human element behind his groundbreaking work. In his autobiography, Recollections of My Life, Cajal reflects on his decision to marry in 1879 despite warnings from his family and friends: "I determined to marry, contrary to the advice of my parents and friends, who presaged a disaster. For an impenitent dreamer, a despiser of filthy lucre and of all social prejudices, it is obvious that my marriage had necessarily to be a love match." This love, built on partnership and mutual support, became an essential foundation for his work. Cajal’s tribute to his wife reminds us that even the most revolutionary scientific achievements are deeply human, shaped by the connections and companionship that sustain them. @SENC_ @ryc_ayerbe @InstitutoCajal

The Brain, Identity & Portraiture - counting down to Valentine's with my favorite Galentine. The brain is a pattern-seeking machine, shaping identity through memory, perception, and experience. Just as Santiago Ramón y Cajal mapped neurons—the “butterflies of the soul”—portraiture maps the inner self, capturing a moment in time that is both personal and universal. This series of portraits is more than ink on paper. It’s a visual inventory of my daughter’s evolving identity—her experiences as a biracial adoptee, the small details that make her unique, and the larger histories that shape us all. Like Cajal’s neuron drawings, these portraits uncover hidden rhythms—the way patterns, repetition, and memory shape our sense of self. We are all made of stories and connections—and just like the brain, portraiture is about making those invisible links visible. @InstitutoCajal

Throwing it back with butterflies, ponies, and pink ladies for Valentine’s Week. Santiago Ramón y Cajal saw neurons as “butterflies of the soul,” capturing the fleeting beauty of thought itself. But did you know pink impacts the brain in fascinating ways? -Baker-Miller Pink has a sedative effect, reducing aggression and anxiety. -Pink is linked to dopamine release—creating feelings of nostalgia, openness, and even dreamy euphoria. -Softer pastels activate the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation, comfort). -Vivid/hot pinks stimulate the limbic system (arousal, excitement, attention). Cajal described neurons reaching out in search of connection as “protoplasmic kisses.” I see art as a reflection of the brain’s hidden rhythms—where color, memory, and emotion intertwine. Watch the video for a glimpse into my pink-hued world of pattern and form, where art and neuroscience meet. #SciArt #NeuroArt #SantiagoRamónyCajal #Neuroscience #Cajal #Drawing #MondayMorning
