Taking adv. of unpaid or low-paid interns/GAs with full time hours & framing as "paying your dues" should never be accepted.
If you want people to be on call all the time, pay them to be on call all the time.
The issue with retaining younger generations of athletic coaches/admin has as much to do with the pay as it does the culture (not detailed here via CollegeAD). Destructive leadership, win at all costs, ethical/moral compromises are pushing passionate people out of the space

Many SIDs would love to do this. Sadly most athletic departments don’t staff their comms office with enough personnel and resources to allow SIDs to dedicate this kind of time to feature stories.
If I were a SID or working in an athletic communications office, I would be focused on constantly writing feature stories on student-athletes across the department.
It can be a game-changer when it comes to NIL.

No they wouldn't. In D-II and D-III, athletics recruitment drives enrollment. Half the students play a sport at many schools. Cutting athletics would be a crippling financial hit to many D-II and D-III schools, as they wouldn't be able to recruit as many tuition paying students.
NCAA President Charlie Baker says that absent Congressional action, he thinks Division II and Division III schools will get out of college sports.

baseball should have a tenth position on the field called the team historian. his job is to just know interesting facts about the team. he can stand anywhere and doesn’t have to field, but he’s allowed to bring food and drinks with him and is paid far more than the other players
