In Alabama, every job that you do for the DOC is unpaid. That is from Dorm Cleaner, Kitchen, Infirmary and Runners. You are working anywhere from 4-12 hours a day with NO COMPENSATION.
W/out that SLAVE LABOR the prisons could not run
At 20 yrs old I was given a 25 year sentence for murder. It was considered “a heinous murder”
At 35 I was receiving “The Good Citizen Scholarship”
I wish others could have the same CHANCE at parole and freedom to show their transformation.
I am not AN ANOMALY
21 yrs old. 41 years old
Max Security Prison. Daddy
Second Chances like this happen all the time. We need to look at the Humanity of a person not the crime they committed.
Society would label me a “Murderer”.
I am a Husband & Daddy!!!!
My Mom was writing a letter to my brother & me when she died of a massive heart attack at 46 in 2000.
In that letter, she stated that she was proud of me using the time in the County Jail to get my GED.
She would be proud of all of my other accomplishments too.
Going to prison at 20 with a 25 yr sentence. I was able to dream a lot about what I hoped my life would be like when I was released.
I had no IDEA that it would be so blessed. The fulfillment of one of those dreams came to pass on Monday with Guy Joshua.
NEVER STOP DREAMING

Where are you getting your info from- Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime???
This is ALL wrong. Also, stating Solitary is for quiet times is so CRUEL. You don’t or can’t comprehend what that does to a person
So, got some AMAZING LIFE NEWS TO SHARE!!!
Tomorrow I am going to be seeing my Brother. I haven’t seen him since we were in prison together in 2008. He will be meeting my wife and Guy Joshua. We are the only immediate family we have left. I am so excited. Pics to come
@CeliaMcKee
Failure is a part of success. Too many people will show the Masterpiece to everyone, but won’t show the many attempts beforehand or talk about the days with no passion or creativity.
Talking about lack and failure produces character
At 19 I committed a murder and received a 25 yr sentence. I served 13 1/2. April 1st will be 8 yrs free.
Why do we lock folks up for Felony Murder for LWOP or give the DP?
People can change as I did. Abolish DP, LWOP and Life Sentences. They don’t do any good
I have been on parole for 2,749 days and have maneuvered during this time.
My reality is that anything could send me back to prison over the next 1,477 days (or my pardon). When is Enough is Enough? Have I not shown over the past 7+ yrs I have changed?
22 years ago I was arrested for Murder in Alabama.
Thought I was going to get the DP or LWOP. Received 25 years. Served 13 1/2 yrs on the inside and about 8 1/2 on parole.
Now I am pardoned- I am not an anomaly. We need to Abolish ALL lengthy sentences!!!
This is my brother, me and Guy Joshua. Was a great time reconnecting after 13 years.
We both served time on a Murder charge. Here we are, out and have families of our own.
EVERYONE deserves a

Can we also have a discussion about how Polygraphs DON’T work yet are used to send people on the Registry back to prison!!!
Does it make sense that it’s not ADMISSIBLE in court but is when it has to do with someone on the Registry???
After Many Months. My job search is over.
On Monday, 2-15, I begin working for Straight Ahead Org in PA as a Field Organizer. I am excited to be part of this Org and to help the men and women in the PA DOC be released
I know everyone has been waiting. Let me introduce you to Guy Joshua Garlock.
He was born 11/30/2020 at 1:47 pm. He came in weighing 7 lbs 5 oz and was 20 inches long.
Mom, Baby and me are all doing well.
P.S. My wife is a TROOPER!!!!
@elizaorlins
There is NO JUSTICE in our system.
There is escaping punishment if you have privilege and money.
There is being treated like an animal if you are BIPOC and/or poor
If you are someone who stole something, lied or cheated as kid.
Do you tell people you are a Thief, a Liar or a Cheat?
If you don’t do this- then please don’t call ppl incarcerated an inmate or ppl when released a convict or ex-felon.
Language Matters.
One act doesn’t define
We need REGULAR citizens and Formerly Incarcerated folks on Parole/Pardon Boards.
Not Former Judges
Not Former Prosecutors
Not Former LEO
Not Former Probation/Parole
The 3 Federal Executions for this coming week should be cancelled.
Those who are in charge should not be deciding between life n death.
#AbolishTheDeathPenalty

was shot 60 times.
Another example of 2 tiers of the system.
Rep- Do you think ppl who committed murder should be released?
Me- Absolutely. I committed a murder. (Explained story)
After our conversation
Rep- you’re the first person to commit murder I have met!!
This is why EVERY politician should visit a prison. All about Proximity
On Oct 29th, 1999 I was 20 yrs old and arrested for murder in Alabama.
20 years later, I am not the same person. I have been out for over 6 years. I am involved in the
#cjreform
movement using my story to educate others.
Once a violent offender, not ALWAYS one
I have been thinking about today a lot. As I am going w/ my wife for our first child to be born.
W/out parole I would still be in prison and wouldn’t have the accomplishments for the last 7 1/2 yrs. (Oct, 24, 2024)
But was a 25 yr sentence needed?
We need Sentencing Reforms
Can society begin to look at people who are incarcerated as humans???
I know the system labeled me as
#214579
and thought of me as a Monster; BUT I was always David Garlock.
My humanity did not change or stop!!!!
Oct 29th 1999 I was 20 years old & was arrested for murder.
I received a 25 yr sentence, served 13 1/2 yrs and released in 2013. Pardoned in 2021.

Also am “Heinous Violent Offender” because of a crime that happened 20 yrs ago.
No one close to me views me that way!!
Have you ever changed the diaper of a 76 year old man who was partially paralyzed and couldn’t commit another crime- yet the ADOC wouldn’t release him?
I did numerous times. The one I will never forget was the time when he died instantly when we were changing his diaper.
I love my new job.
I am in a place where I get to have conversations with Senators and Representatives on a daily basis to help pave the way for men and women to be released from prison. What more could I ask for in a job???
Repeat After Me:
Not everyone who goes to prison for a “violent” offense is “violent” or will commit another offense.
We can’t work to just free those who committed “non-violent” offenses!!!
#FreeThemAll
Today is my FREEDOMVERSARY!!!!
11 years ago I walked out of the Alabama DOC. I had plans about attending college- but would have never even thought that I’d be doing the work I am now & being able to travel the country and speak in universities!!!
I am heading to
@ODU
This is Alabama's Parole Board
Man seeking Medical Parole with Cancer Diagnosis, HIV, Hepatitis C and other issues. Given 6 months to live.
Told to come back up for parole in 2 years.
Bama needs to do BETTER
Could you imagine if you had to pay $5-$20 for a 15 min phone call??
Could you imagine if you had to pay $0.50 for an email?
This is the reality for the family members of those incarcerated. The families that aren’t ROLLING IN $$$$$
8 years ago,
#BryanStevenson
called me to his office and let me know my parole had been transferred to PA. This parole transfer happened in 3 weeks when it usually would take 6 months to a year.
This opened the door for me to attend
@EasternU
and now be involved in CJ Reform
“Violent Offender” is a term many people use for a large number of people incarcerated and people released from prison.
Does committing a “violent” offense mean you will always be violent? People who know me would tell you ABSOLUTELY NOT.
People CAN & DO CHANGE!!!!
Stop PARDONING turkeys and start pardoning people who could come home and spend the holidays with their families.
There are SO MANY folks in prison who deserve pardons MORE than these Turkeys.
Pres. Biden introduces Liberty and Bell, the two turkeys named for the iconic Philadelphia structure who will receive this Thanksgiving's presidential pardon.
“These birds have a new appreciation for the words, ‘Let freedom ring.’”
When I walked out of prison in 2013, I would've never have imagined I would be on the set of

and be in a movie. Thank you
#bryanstevenson
for this opportunity I will nevet forget. Such a blessing to participate in telling your story and Walter McMillians
Tomorrow is my Freedomversary!!!! I walked out of prison on April 1, 2013. I don’t know how much I will be on here tomorrow as I will be having Lithotripsy to get rid of my kidney stone. Prayers are appreciated.
1) Do away w\ probation n parole
2) The longest sentence one can serve is 20 yrs
3) Give Good Time for model behavior
4) Provide Education to everyone incarcerated
5) When possible, use other means of punishment
Who agrees this would empty our prisons? Lower recidivism rates?
As I sit here, getting ready to send in my last restitution payment. $50 a month for the last 6 1/2 years.
I am reminded of those who can't make those payments and are trapped in our debtors prison. We need to make drastic changes to help the marginalized and impoverished
Incarceration DOES NOT make us any safer.
Incarceration DOES NOT prevent crime.
Incarceration DOES tear up communities and families.
Incarceration DOES take one’s humanity.
We need to STOP locking ppl up and really focus on the person and their TRAUMA
It’s my 10th Freedomversary!!!!
I walked out of the Alabama DOC 10 years ago. Freedom tasted so GOOD. All that has happened in this time is BEYOND AMAZING!!!!
This summer I am going back to prison as part of

teaching with
@CoffeeLurver
Let’s all wish the One and Only
#BryanStevenson
a Happy Birthday!!!! He has helped change the Legal System and opened doors for those who were condemned to die!!!!
LWOP sentences need to be ABOLSIHED!!!!
We have around 2,300 ppl who have been sentenced to the Death Penalty.
We have over 55,000 who are serving. LWOP!!!
We need to show Grace and Mercy by Abolishing LWOP
This Family is brought to you by an Alabama Parole Board who believed in Second Chances- even for someone who committed a “violent offense”.
The current Parole Board needs to LEARN about Redemption, Restoration and Second Chances. Not just PUNISHMENT
Let us all wish

. Here I am thriving because of that Open Door. (Rev 3:7-8)
2 yrs ago it felt like I won the Lotto!!!
God opened the door for me to obtain my Pardon from Alabama!!
It has been an Amazing and FREE 2 yrs. No paper and supervision.
Time to go into prison and teach a class!!!!
If one of your lines is “Do the Crime do the Time”
Please look in the mirror. Have you done anything in your life- no matter when- that could have gotten you arrested? If you say YES, would you go turn yourself in right now if there were no statute of limitations?
I had the worst April Fools Joke attempted on me.
At 7:45 am on April 1, 2013
Two CO’s told me that my paperwork had not come in and that I would not be released from prison.
I told them they were not funny and I didn’t want to joke around about my freedom. 8am I walked out
Hebrews 13:3 “Remember those in prison, as if you were with them”
We need to remember those in prison at all times, but especially today as it is hard to be away from their families. Pray for and think about them.
It is
#BryanStevensons
birthday today. He has given his life to work against the Criminal Legal System and Changing the Narrative. Hoping he has an Amazing day
The murder that sent me to prison when I was 19. My brother and I weren’t thinking about the consequences. We were thinking about escaping the horrific conditions we were in.
Neither one of us is the same person. We both have families. To them, we’re not “violent”
Challenge to all criminal justice professors:
Have your students select a successful returning citizen and right an article about them. In this article have them right about the person's prison time, re-entry and their success after release.
Let's change the narrative
PSA!!!!
If you are doing work in CJ Reform in 2022 and don’t have Formerly Incarcerated ppl in your Organization- not just in token roles. Then you are DOING SOMETHING WRONG.
Lived Experience is NEEDED at the Table to bring about CHANGE
I committed my offense at 19
Arrested at 20
Released from prison at 33
Enrolled in college at 34
Married at 35
Graduated at 37
Fatherhood at 41
Pardoned 42
Definitely not the same as the 19 yr old
How many people are the exact same as they were at the age of 15,18,21,25, etc? So, why is it so far fetched that someone that's been incarcerated since they were younger has not changed? Talk about double standards.
When should Parole end?
Served 13 1/2 of 25 yr sentence
7 yrs on parole
Graduated College, Married, Bought a House, gainfully employed, Public Speaker, Paid Restitution, & Serves in my Church
What else do I have to prove?
End Sentence on 10/27/2024- do I need to do 4 more yrs?
Somone who committed a robbery= Human
Someone who committed a drug offense = Human
Someone who committed a murder= Human
Someone who committed a sex offense= Human
Someone who committed perjury = Human
Please do not be posting about the things that you can’t do today or who you can’t be with.
In the 13 1/2 yrs in prison, I always had things to be thankful for and had an attitude of gratitude. If that was possible there- your can focus on the good. Be Blessed
@ACTBrigitte
If you raise the voting age to 25 and state that it’s because they can’t “think”- then also raise the age for juvenile court to 25 too.
How can you say someone under 25 doesn’t have cognitive ability to vote but has it to commit an offense?
Walked into a company who had told me that they would not hire someone who had committed sexual harassment or a sexual offense.
Walked out with the willingness of HR to hire these individuals and not base anything on their past.
Love being able to educate and change the Labels
Sept 14th, 2021
The Improbable Happened!!!
I received a Pardon From Alabama. This is unheard of because not many ppl are receiving pardons and especially for a violent offense.
The Pardons and Parole Board of AL Needs to do BETTER!!!!
As prisons and jails are stopping in-person visits to stop the spread of COVID.
Can you instead make your staff where masks, get vaccinated and allow those who are incarcerated to do the same.
Visitation is IMPORTANT
When did Parole become Retrying someone for the offense committed????
Isn’t parole supposed to look at the individual NOW- not at the offense???
Let us get back to looking at the Transformation one has made not define them by the offense
Happy Birthday
@JohnFetterman
and Gracie!!!!
My wife and I are honored to share this day with y’all as it is our anniversary. 7 years strong- all while living here in PA.
A “Violent Offense” does not make a person violent.
We need to stop separating those in prison in categories based on their crime.
We need to look at people as who they are today.
I am not the same person I was in 1999.
@LeahFarringto14
Wow!!!!
I wish EVERYONE had to put the worst thing they ever did on an application!!!
Not just those who have PAID THEIR PRICE in prison.
When will we ever get rid of the Scarlet Letter the of Incarceration
Received a text from owner of Tasty Table Catering where I used to work.
Told me a guy who learned to cook in prison applied for a job. He thought his past would end the interview. The owner said that one of his best former employee and friend had a background.
We pave the way!
PSA!!!
PAROLE & PROBATION are NOT supposed to be based on the offense that was committed to end up in jail/prison. It is about the rehabilitation that one has undergone in their time of incarceration and/or Freedom.
Let’s stop RETRYING people!!!
Families of incarcerated ppl who died because of COVID-19 should ALL sue the jails or prisons for negligence.
Make them protect those they are entrusted to house in their facilities
@dwatson6055
@PMBreakingNews
@amcneer
Why not????
If you know anything about Theories behind policing. The same amount of crime happens in White Neighborhoods as POC Neighborhoods- but more arrests happen in the POC neighborhoods.
Police also incite a lot of violence too. We will actually be safer.
Whoever came up with this should be punished, demoted or fired. It is horrible to think that people would laugh at this sick joke.
Now how about they show pictures of the SLOP that those who are incarcerated actually eat.
@PBCountySheriff
YALL NEED TO DO BETTER!!!!
My Mother passed away when I was in the County jail almost 20 years ago.
The last letter I received was one that she said she was proud of me and sorry for what happened to my brother and me.
She is missed every day!!!
This is so HORRIBLE!!!! How can a judge say that a 14yo is incorrigible and CANNOT change.
I see ppl in the class I teach in prison w/ LWOP. They are NOT the person they were decades ago.
This sentence needs to be DONE AWAY WITH!!!!!
Alabama just gave a 14yo Life without Parole. Michigan just gave a 15yo Life without Parole. But children are not adults. That's why we don't let them drive drink smoke consent to sex sign contracts or rent hotel rooms. No other country gives children death in prison sentences.
In 2023- Prisons ARE NOT about Rehabilitation or Restoration!!!!
They ARE all about punishment and retribution.
We need a system that is about restoring and healing people. That is the way to prevent crime.
Deterrence DOES NOT work!!!!
I feel like we need to Change the Narrative right now. For those who are willing. Let us post pics of our Families showing what a Second Chance really looks like and use this hashtag.
#SecondChances
I am really baffled by all of the Department of Corrections who are changing their names to:
Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and Reentry.
What has actually changed? What are they doing to rehabilitate and help with reentry?
Raise your hand if you believe the Registry does not work, is a waste of money and is constant punishment to those on it?
I want to see child and sexual abuse to be prevented but IS NOT DONE by the Registry
