I wish I could tell you that the intensity of

discourse or the way some readers feel it is appropriate to treat writers hasn't had an impact on finding new authors willing to write for Star Wars.
I wish I could tell you that. I really really do.

I've told this story before - but there are authors I've talked to who have turned down the opportunity to come write novels and stories in Star Wars for precisely this reason.
Brilliant / award winning / best-selling authors who'd write incredible stories that we'll never get.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy knows women stepping into "Star Wars" might face fan attacks.
“Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying...I think a lot of the women who step into ‘Star Wars’ struggle with

Jam refuses to isolate.
People often ask how typos or other text errors end up in publishing books. The answer is quite simple. Books are made by humans.
"If I worked on the books, I would just find all the typos."
You probably would not. Let me give you an example:
How about one more book announcement before holidays

is the closest that a

What do you do when you meet the calligrapher of Lord of the Rings who developed the alphabets and Bilbo's and Frodo's handwriting. You ask the Hobbits to sign the books they wrote, of course.
Shout out to the Death Star build team. Thing gets blown-up, falls from space, and spends the next 30-some odd years just bobbing in the ocean, and yet the delicate window treatment is still mostly intact.
That is craftsmanship.

Time sure is a thing that passes
Just had a fascinating SW interaction. Guy was talking to me about TLJ and SW. He talked for about 20 min about Rey as a Mary Sue, TLJ destroying SW, boycotts, Disney hate, fans owning SW etc. I said nothing. I waited. And waited. And waited some more (and sipped my coffee).
Bucky read a RARE book.
The first US printing of the Hobbit was in March of 1938.
To read it in 1937, Bucky would have read a copy of the orig first UK printing, sometime between Sept - Dec. That printing was just 1500 copies. The second UK printing didn't land till 1938.

Last night I read an entire book in one sitting - for fun. Can't remember the last time I did that. The book is great.
(Probably also helped that I had two cats sitting on me who refused to move for 4 hours)
It was an early copy of Becky Lynch's memoir coming in March
Below is a complete discussion of how the SW Books timeline went from Legends to canon to the canon High Republic redesign with everything in between. Ethos, placement explanations, nonsense, omissions, redesign decisions, tidbits, more nonsense, and more. (1/TOO MANY)

I don't get to put my tax expertise and two tax degrees to use often, but let me use for you, and save you the time you'd waste reading this drivel.
That's not how any of this works. Not one bit.
Optimism and disappointment are intertwined. The greater the capacity for one, the greater the potential for the other. But, regardless of how much you may fill your cup with optimism, you need never feel shame when that gives way to disappointment.
Don't apologize for caring.
Pulling this one detail out of my
#StarWars
#ReignoftheEmpire
thread.
In Book 1 - we are going to dig into some of the content around the Delegation of 2,000/Padme's legacy. And yes we consulted the Ep 3 deleted scenes.
(Something many of you have been asking for, for years)
Stories you haven't experienced yet are not plot holes.
Stories you don't like are not plot holes.
Stories you experienced, but forgot about, are not plot holes. (no shame in that, happens to all of us)
Stories where characters make sub-optimal decisions are not plot holes.
These two novels next year are going to play well together.
One looking at the Jedi right before the events of TPM, as they reckon with their past.
And the other in the immediate aftermath of TPM, and the Jedi (Mace, specifically) reckoning with their future.
To answer the question "why would a Jedi choose to become an Inquisitor?" you have to chart their full path, from Padawan onward. Their rise, the Order's fall, and everything that comes after.

Realistically speaking - the entire TROS novelization should just be page after page of the roll call of ships and pilots appearing at the final battle. Just 300 pages of callsigns.
Hi
#swtwt
. I'm Tom, I edit many of your favorite
#StarWars
books (and probably some of your least fav) and support the storytellers that make the galaxy feel alive.
I spend my days thinking about storytelling in the GFFA, and love meeting readers (and friends) old and new.
You know what's cool? A novel about Jedi Councilors
What's cooler? A novel about ALL 12 Jedi Councilors
What's the coolest? A novel about all 12 Jedi Councilors, written by the one and only John Jackson Miller (

Storm's coming Luke Skywalker. Better be ready.
#ShadowoftheSith
(Fun fact, we don't often do excerpts *this* long, but we made an exception because, well...you'll see)
Today is a cool
#StarWars
book anniversary. 10 years ago, the Essential Readers Companion was published. A truly unique SW book, unlikely to ever be duplicated.
(Here are a few cool tidbits about the book)
Other ways to say "I Love You" without those words:
*My captain, my king
*I'm glad you're with me, here at the end of all things.
*Farewell, my brave Hobbits
*My friends, You bow to no one
I think this is when I'm supposed to drop my Venmo to like raise money for student loan payments or something.
As enticing as that is...instead I'll just say, be kind to each other. Wash your hands and hydrate.

Three
#StarWars
things:
1) Yes, we broke our rule and made ARCs (advanced reading copies) of
#AlphabetSquadron
We couldn't wait to let people read it.
2) Sure, it is sort of a "successor" to Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron.
3) It's also a "successor" to Rogue One. Get ready.
Remember that time Alexander Freed wrote about two squadrons fighting in a duel to the death, and the whole time were talking over open comms, screaming the names of dead compatriots, and saying how much they missed each other while trying to kill each other.
That was WILD.
One more
#FromaCertainPOVStrikesBack
note
Most of the contributors are new. One of the goals of the FACPOV series is expanding the voices telling
#StarWars
stories
Star Wars is for everyone, and we have to keep working so the voices telling SW stories better reflects that.
Friendly reminder that kind words and deep dive threads on Twitter are awesome, but the best appreciation you can show an author for a book is a rating and review on a retail or community site. That sounds trite, but it's one of the few universal truths of publishing.
Surreal moment when someone tweets at a brand account calling for *you* to be fired, and yet *you* are also the person managing the brand account they tweeted at (but they don't know that).
Just another day on the bird site.
It's an honor to just be thought of as young.
As we approach April 9, and the release of
#StarWars
#TheLivingForce
there's some exciting behind-the-scenes nuggets I want to share.
Starting with how John solved the giant cast challenge (12+ Jedi) in a smart and endlessly fun way.
Jedi Pairings. (1/8)
*A room somewhere on the edge of the galaxy*
General Grevious, Darth Maul, Asajj Ventress, and Count Dooku argue over who is Obi-Wan Kenobi's true nemesis.
*door suddenly bursts open*
Anakin Skywalker enters
"What's up, nerds?"
Taking a closer look some proofs of the final

cover before we head to press. Photo doesn't even begin to do justice to Kotaro Chiba's incredible work.
#StarWarsVisions
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for coming to our panel. I'm overwhelmed. There was one thing we didn't get to say about
#PrincessandtheScoundrel
so I'll say it here:
"Did you wish ROTJ was 15 minutes longer so we could get more Luke/Leia sibling content?"
Wish granted.
Today is another

book anniversary. Published 5 years ago, the first anthology of Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View. (aka

The best bad idea ever. Here are some tidbits (known and unknown)
Two weeks til
#StarWars
#JediBattleScars
- here's my favorite Merrin quote from the book.
@SamMaggs
wrote the heck out of this story
Imperial: "You aren't even a Jedi, what makes you think you stand a chance?
Merrin: "You're right. I am not a Jedi. I am much, much worse."
For three years I schemed and plotted and planned to get Elizabeth inducted into the 501st. She's unfailingly humble, and would never seek that recognition herself. But no one deserves it more than her. Everything that is good about
#StarWarsBooks
is because of her leadership.
Moving ever closer to the release of
#StarWars
#TheLivingForce
by
@jjmfaraway
on April 9th.
Shout out to our amazing designer Liz for this fantastic title page design, utilizing the chairs from the Jedi Council Chamber. Its simple and subtle, but just awesome.
With
#StarWarsVision
and “The Duel” released, and our
#Ronin
novel coming Oct 12th (preorder now!), probably a good time to explain how we settled on “The Duel” as inspiration for a novel.
There are multiple reasons.
(To be clear: There wasn’t a wrong choice) [1/10]
More details:
April wants to be infected so people will stay further away, but actually helps keep Andy healthy.
Andy reveals that he doesn't use toilet paper anyway, so what's the big deal?
Sweetums develops a test that turns out to just be a candy thermometer.
I'll say this for book pirates: most of them are dumb enough to tell you exactly where/how they pirated the books.
Which only makes it easier to get those sources removed.
Don't pirate books.
#TheBadBatch
has been really great, and S3 looks no different.
And, oh yeah - you might want to go read
#StarWars
#DarkDisciple
if you happened to miss out on that.
Fun fact. At conventions at the
#StarWarsBooks
booth, the ladies I work with regularly get asked "have you ever read any of these books?"
The guys NEVER get asked that. We get asked "did you write any of these?"
Even assuming the *best* of people the word choice stands out.
Working on four
#StarWars
books simultaneously, one thing stands out. All four authors have asked the question: "How far can I push the emotional toll/turmoil for these characters?"
All four have answered: "yes"
(Convergence / Battle of Jedha / Battle Scars / Cataclysm)
One of the best moments, as an editor, is when the first draft of a highly anticipated manuscript arrives. Opening the file, and scanning the title and the first few sentences.
It never ever gets old.
(Yes, this is a SW book. But not any of the ones you *know* about...Not yet)
As always, any statement about "respecting fans" or "listening to fans" or "making it for the fans" that doesn't define *which* fans, is a useless statement. Utterly.
And if the definition is "real" or "true" fans, then its still a useless statement.
More amazing art! This time, the cover for The Princess and the Scoundrel (art by Oliver Cuthbertson) by Beth Revis.
(Yes, that's your first look at the wedding attire for Han/Leia. No, it's probably not the last look at it.)
Get them to give more personal answers, not just regurgitate what they read on a forum or social media. Get them to make comparisons. They might come to conclusions on their own they'd never accept being told. *Shrug* idk if this helps but it seemed meaningful enough to share.
He ended by saying he was going home to watch TLJ again and said he wanted to read the novelization. And noted that I was the first person he ever discussed TLJ with that didnt end in a shouting match/argument.
Here's some insights about developing that new
#Thrawn
art based on some chats with Tim Zahn. To understand, take a look at the complete jacket that shows the back (I hear that's helpful for costume making).
The question was - do Chiss EDF officers have dress uniforms?
In the late stages of the TROS novelization keeping things organized is KEY across versions. So to make filtering new comments easier, I needed a comment code word I could search for that wouldn't appear anywhere else.
Naturally, I choose: Mithrawnodingdong

Four years ago I met a girl for a first date at a museum, which led to cupcakes, then pizza. That night I saved the museum ticket and have carried it in my wallet ever since. When you know, you know.
Today we decided to retrace those steps but added a quick stop to make it canon.
