Three years after the onset of ALS,

to help him perform his job, his fingerprints are all over this club through his work as assistant GM and head of the data department.
Remember when Florida fired Gerard Gallant after a game in Carolina and made him haul his luggage off the team bus, then made him wait on the sidewalk for his own taxi to the airport.
The Panthers have five playoff wins in the last 20 years. Gallant has five in the last 16 days.
Matthew Tkachuk on Kassian: “If he doesn’t want to get hit, then stay off the tracks. I got him three times there. You’d think he’d learn after the first one. If he wants to react like that, we’ll take the power play, we’ll take the game-winner and we’ll move on in first place.”
Two years after John Tavares turned down more money from New York to sign with Toronto, the Isles are in the Eastern Conference final. Inject that kind of feel-good storyline straight into my veins, every time.
20 years ago, SJ traded away its No. 3 goalie, Miikka Kiprusoff, who had just turned 27, for a draft pick. He promptly led his new team to the Stanley Cup final and nearly won the Conn Smythe.
10 months ago, SJ traded away its No. 3 goalie, Adin Hill, 26, for a draft pick…
👀
Honestly, Darryl Sutter should be embarrassed about how he handled the post-game question asking for his thoughts on how Jakob Pelletier played in his debut. For a coach that values veterans, leadership, and the maturity of older players, it was an unnecessarily immature moment.
Matthew Tkachuk, asked just now by the Sportsnet panel about Paul Maurice: "He's made it so much fun for me to come to the rink each and every day, and that's so important."
Tell me without telling me why you didn't want to sign long-term in Calgary last summer.
No goalie has started >70 gm in a season since Cam Talbot (73) in 2016-17. It’s only happened three times since 2012.
Miikka Kiprusoff did it six seasons in a row.
2005-06, 73 starts
2006-07, 74 starts
2007-08, 76 starts
2008-09, 76 starts
2009-10, 72 starts
2010-11, 71 starts
Behind every great hockey club is a supporting staff. You don’t know them, you don’t see them, yet they’re integral to team success, helping the players perform at their best.
Always remember this young lady, athletic therapist Dayna Brons. Another

gone too soon.
Breakdown, by nationality, of the 23 players that suited up for the St. Louis Blues in the post-season:

So tell me again how a “Canadian team” hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1993.
Let this sink in. Mark Giordano, 37, will play an NHL game in May for the first time tonight. What a sad and telling reflection of the
#Flames
struggles since going to the Stanley Cup final in 2004.
If I’m John Tavares, I grab an Islanders, Leafs, Lightning, Sharks, Stars and Bruins jersey, rent a white Ford Expedition with tinted windows, and lead TV crews on a 2-hour chase on the 401.
When he finally stops and gets out, whatever jersey he’s wearing — BINGO!

Travis Hamonic has launched yet another initiative. Charlie's Children, created by him and wife, Stephanie, is a program that will support low-income families, or single parents expecting a newborn, with resources and supplies.
Man, this guy is the best human playing pro sports.
I’m well aware there are still plenty of Milan Lucic critics, but compare what the Flames have gotten out of him in this series versus what Calgary got out of James Neal last post-season against the Avs and my goodness, it’s not even close.
Most NHL wins during the 10 years in which Miikka Kiprusoff played for the Flames (03-04 thru 12-13):
1. Kiprusoff, 305
2. Brodeur*, 304
3. Luongo*, 293
4. Lundqvist*, 276
* In the Hockey Hall of Fame
Oilers fans wondering where the already-thin secondary scoring will come from with Drake Caggiula now traded, are completely forgetting about Milan Lucic, who has two goals since Christmas.
Wait, that’s two goals since *last* Christmas.
Never mind.
Career SV% with the Oilers | not with the Oilers:
- Talbot, .912 | .928
- Dubnyk, .910 | .920
- Scrivens, .898 | .914
- Nilsson, .901 | .908
- Brossoit, .897 | .925
Edmonton, where save percentages go to die.
Can confirm the Flames plan to wear their retro reds for all home playoff games. Why not, they worked pretty well 30 years ago. Not that hockey clubs are superstitious or anything.
Even-strength goals against:
Quinn Hughes
- after 16 gm last year | 13
- after 16 gm this year | 26 (increase of 13)
Noah Hanifin
- after 12 games last year | 13
- after 12 games this year | 4 (decrease of 9)
It's oversimplifying it, but the Chris Tanev effect in a nutshell.
Matthew Phillips is same height as Alex DeBrincat, Cole Caufield. He’s an inch shorter than Mats Zuccarello, Kailer Yamamoto, Tyler Johnson, Cam Atkinson. He’s 24, has played four AHL seasons, and last year led his team with a career-best 31-37-68. Give this guy a legit audition.
LOVE that Mark Giordano clip as Sportsnet signed off:
"Hey guys, it's Mark Giordano, captain of the Calgary Flames. I just want to congratulate all you guys that have been drafted. And to you guys, who haven't been drafted, I wasn't either!" Holds up the Norris trophy.

That light will forever shine bright.
Thank you, Kelsie, for everything. I had the good fortune to get to know Chris a little bit, but it was through your courage, your incredible strength, and your gift for writing that I got to know him a lot better. Hugs to you and your kids.
Sean Monahan was never as physical, fast, or sound defensively as fans wanted, but he was elite at scoring goals. He also gutted it out through career-altering injuries and too many surgeries that took a toll. If your take on Monahan was he didn’t try hard enough, give it a rest.
As I walked to my vehicle after the game, a truck is crossing in front of me. I slow down to go behind, but he slows to a stop. I wave him by and instead, he rolls down his window and asks me how my night went.
Travis Hamonic.
Debate the player, but you can’t debate the person.
Dustin Wolf was the AHL’s MVP last season going 42-10-2 with a .932 SV%. After today’s shutout, he’s 5-0-0 with a .934 SV%.
His career AHL record is 82-20-6. No typo. Let that sink in.
Come on, what are we doing here?
Before the season, most Flames fans would have been happy with clinching a playoff spot with one week to go in the regular season. Instead, first in the Pacific, first in the West and the best in Canada. Crazy.
Ignore the calendar for a moment and the fact that the NHL season is less than two weeks old, and just appreciate that as of this moment, every Canadian team is in a playoff spot.
Except for Edmonton.
Milan Lucic making his presence felt on and off the ice lately. Meanwhile in the AHL, James Neal has one power play goal and one assist in his last 10 games with Springfield and is minus-six.
(And he will be a $1.9M cap hit for the Oilers for three more seasons after this one.)
I watched today’s COVID-19 update and came away really impressed with Dr. Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer. In this unprecedented crisis, what a great leader. Competent, calm, articulate, empathetic but assertive. Her candour is so reassuring. I think we’re in good hands.
From the on-ice setup, to the guest list, to Jamie McLennan's hilarious speech, to the jam-packed highlight montage, to the thunderous fan ovations throughout, to Miikka Kiprusoff's speech(!). That No. 34 retirement ceremony was A+ stuff from start to finish. Well done, Flames.🔥
The 2021-22 Pacific Division will consist of:
- Vegas
- One team down 3-0
- Five teams that missed the playoffs altogether
- One team that doesn’t exist yet
Firing of Gulutzan not unexpected, but he is a good man. Whether it was chats while watching our girls at hockey evals, or media stuff at the Saddledome, I enjoyed getting to know Glen. Remember also that 10 hours after game 82 ended, he was visiting Humboldt Broncos in hospital.
That’s it, that’s all. Sixteen years of being a Hockey Dad just came to an end. Thanks Riley and Ashlyn for so many fond memories. It was a great ride watching you play this wonderful game.
For those still in the midst of it, enjoy every minute because it goes by fast. Too fast.
Thoughts: 1. Did I see a Huberdeau extension coming this quickly? Nope. 2. Is it a little rich? Maybe. 3. Was it a flex from Treliving to alter the Calgary narrative? Maybe. 4. Will he be a $10.5M player at age 37? Unlikely. 5. Should you be worried about 2030-31 right now? Nope.
In October, Calgary set out on a season-defining road trip, winning all five games — Det, Wsh, NYR, NJ, Pit. But Nikita Zadorov wasn’t part of it, scratched for all of them.
Last night in the biggest game in 18 years, he led the club in ice time at 28:42.
Now that’s redemption.
Who knew Matthew Tkachuk not wanting to be in Calgary would turn into the gift that keeps on giving for the Flames. First, Jonathan Huberdeau. Now, MacKenzie Weegar. Both locked up for eight years.
Pretty cool seeing Curtis McElhinney hoist the Cup. Age 37, sixth round Flames draft pick in 2002, with his eighth NHL organization, career backup. You don’t last this long in this league in that role if you’re not a good dude. Great story of perseverance.
I had to laugh when the Flames game ended and instead of taking a minute to stay with that game and do some final analysis, Sportsnet immediately switches over to the Vancouver-Edmonton game for the dramatic final 50.8 seconds of an 8-1 Canucks win.
Hey, know your audience. 😂
Major miss by the NHL — league and players — to play on tonight and not lock arms with the NBA to further increase the volume of
#BLM
message, and ensure it’s not just heard, but acted on. Hell, they postponed a game 2 weeks ago when TB-CBJ played hockey for too long. No excuses.
Love me a delicious subplot and the 28-year-old, 115-point LW turns down $10.5M x 8 contract and leaves, only to be replaced by a 28-year-old, 115-point LW who signs a $10.5M x 8 contract — man, this is going to be some great theatre for the next several years. Is it October yet?
Hands down, the Tkachuk post-win hugs were my favourite David Rittich thing. It will be one of those fond “remember when...” parts of Flames lore forever.
I don’t think the name Jacob Markstrom came up once post-game tonight and understandable given the shots were a ridiculous 67-28. Yet the reality is if he doesn’t stab out his blocker to thwart Flames killer, Joe Pavelski, in OT, when he got free down the wing, the Stars win it.
Well, ain't that a coinkydink. At the same time that Minnesota was scoring 7 goals on 22 shots against the Oilers' NHL tandem of Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen, the Stockton Heat was scoring 7 goals on 22 shots against the Oilers' AHL tandem of Alex Stalock and Stuart Skinner.
Pretty much a best-case
#nhldraftlottery
outcome for the Flames.
1. Not Edmonton
2. Not Winnipeg (which then could have been Calgary)
3. Not in the Pacific
4. Not in the West
5. See No. 1.
I like Rasmus Andersson. He's engaging, honest, fiery. He has great vision and a booming shot. He's a proud dad now, too. He's worked extremely hard to become a top-pairing NHL D and is on the cusp of being a star. But he made a poor decision in the heat of the moment on Friday.
Tough break for Evander Kane. Had his contract been terminated 10 days earlier, he still would have had time to get to Montreal and catch that Air Transat flight to Mexico.
Darryl gave us a Chris Sutter update: "He's been practicing Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. He believes (he) started that and believes he's the one who could get 20,000 people to stand up and sing it. So, whenever they come back, they better be ready because he's leading the charge."
I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s going on with the Calgary Flames these days and while it’s easy to get caught up in the here and now, this really is a situation where you need to stop, take a breath, remove emotion, and think B-I-G picture.
The problem with offering
Not qualified today by the Canucks was Markus Granlund, who had been traded to Vancouver by the Flames for Hunter Shinkaruk, who was not qualified by Montreal after he had been traded to the Canadiens for Kerby Rychel, who was not qualified today by Calgary.
Everybody loses.
Johnny Gaudreau becomes the 18th player in NHL history — and first this century — to have 85+ ES points in a season:
Bossy x3
Coffey
Dionne x2
Esposito x2
Gaudreau
Goulet
Gretzky x12
Hodge
Hull
Jagr
Kurri x2
Lafleur x3
Lemieux x2
Nicholls
Shutt
Stastny x3
Trottier x3
Yzerman x2
After not finishing higher than 15th in the last decade,
#Flames
sit second overall with a core that is predominantly young and locked up (or will be soon -- Tkachuk). Four d-men are 22 and under. Best team since 1989.
A long, bright future awaits, yet so much fan outrage today.
I don’t blame Matthew Phillips for moving on. I do blame the organization for not giving him a true opportunity. Maybe he’s too small, but maybe not. We don’t know! Brutal asset management when your drafted and developed AHL all-star signs a one-way elsewhere before you find out.
In 34 starts, David Rittich has allowed >3 goals in regulation only three times. Those three games came against TB, Toronto and SJ. Who are the three highest-scoring teams? TB, Toronto and SJ. Get him back in net, get him feeling good again and get the young man some run support.
Dustin Wolf, who turned 22 today, made 28 stops on Saturday to backstop the Wranglers to a 3-2 win over Abbotsford to clinch first overall in the AHL. In 55 games in his second pro season, Wolf goes 42-10-2 with 7 shutouts, 2.09 GAA, and .932 SV%.
How impressive is that?
He’s
First in the Pacific. Second in the West. Fourth overall, one point up on the reigning Stanley Cup champs. Quite the first 40 games for the
#Flames
. Can't wait to see what's in store for 2019. Thanks everyone for following, reading and coming along for the ride.
Happy New Year!
One thing that was really cool is all the Pens players and staff sat on the visiting bench for the entire Kiprusoff ceremony — applauding, all of it. A great gesture, show of respect, and an opportunity for younger players to see what the other side of an elite career looks like.
Canada was 0-3 at WC and had only two goals when Mangiapane arrived. Since then, five wins and a shootout loss with Andrew Mangiapane’s 11 points (7 g, 4 a) helping propel Canada into the gold medal game. Today, he was player of the game and named one of Canada’s best 3 players.
Johnny Gaudreau, asked post-game about Sean Monahan. "He's been through a lot these past 3-4 years. Every summer, I feel like he's got a major surgery... When he's at practice, around the rink, he's always got a positive attitude, smile on his face. Great teammate, great leader."
Henrik Lundqvist, Cory Schneider, Mike Smith, Jimmy Howard, Craig Anderson, Ryan Miller, Corey Crawford, Marc-Andre Fleury. An absolute amazing goaltender market right now if you’re looking for help between the pipes... and if it was the year 2012.
I wish Geoff Ward the best of luck. Good human. No way was the current plight of this team entirely on his shoulders. Shared blame has been my summation all along and I stand by it. But in sports, coach is the easy move to make. Man, some of these players are in for an awakening!
When I got to the Flames final game of last season, I ended up walking through the player lot behind Michael Stone’s wife, Michelle, and his three little kids — all proudly wearing their Stone No. 26 jerseys. There was a lot of energy there! As I commented to Michelle about how
It really is baffling why the Flames are making it so difficult for their own first-rounder to get into the line-up. Jakob Pelletier is the highest draft pick from 2019 yet to play an NHL game, he’s lit up the AHL for two seasons, and Calgary just lost to the league’s worst team.
As soon as the Flames lost former Norris winner Mark Giordano in the expansion draft, you just knew that as long as Erik Gudbranson, Nikita Zadorov and Oliver Kylington made up half of the defence group on a nightly basis, this team would set modern-era records for most shutouts.
Hey guys, Mike Soroka threw seven shutout innings for the Atlanta Braves tonight and now has a 0.98 ERA. Less than one! Phenomenal. This guy is a Major League Baseball superstar in the making and he’s a born and raised Calgarian.
