Wanna know what type of people they had at TSN 1290?
I was supposed to be on there at noon today to talk about Jets-Flames
In spite of losing their jobs this morning, they JUST WROTE ME to apologize for having to cancel
You gotta put people first, and these were great people.
Zadorov:
"Last season was different. It was Darryl, now there’s no Darryl so there’s no excuses. You guys don’t like hard coaches, you don’t like soft coaches, you don’t like good coaches. It’s a new day league. You come up here and you play hard & leave everything on the ice."
Talbot on his wife's reaction to the fight
"She was not happy with me after the game. She drove to the game and when I went in after it happened I ended up having to drive her car home … She ended up having to have a couple drinks to settle herself down she was so mad at me."
I sent a tweet yesterday about how it really feels like the CFL got the Grey Cup in just under the wire.
I stand by it, but what’s MORE true is that I didn’t give the league and its players nearly enough credit for the way they executed their protocols this season
Pretty amazing
Not my job to defend this but Tkachuk drops everything. He’s clearly ready to go.
I’m a born-and-raised Toronto kid and these social media Leafs fans are so embarrassing.
Connor McDavid, on whether he thought it was a dirty-play by Giordano
#flames
"No, same type of play as the last time, just trying to make a play on the net and get tripped up, but you can’t fault Giordano for trying to make a play on the puck"
Seeing the video from BC Place tonight, and I honestly didn’t think it was possible to drum up this much excitement for our league in Vancouver like this.
Thrilled to be proven wrong.
Pinball Clemons says the Toronto Argonauts and B.C. Lions are talking about trying to address the competitive disadvantage that comes with high cost of real estate in their cities vs. other markets
Paying rent in those cities on a CFL practice roster salary basically impossible.
I don’t know how to say this.
But last year, we all talked about how the CFL wasn’t delivering on the entertainment factor.
That was fair.
This year, though?
Buncha goddamned wild fun every game.
I’m hearing that Saturday’s game between the Stampeders and Bombers is trending towards the biggest crowd of the year at McMahon by a couple thousand.
Expectation is over 25,000.
Yes, still down from a couple years ago, but crowds have gotten bigger each game. Big improvement.
Gonna tap out on tweeting about the Stampeders for the night.
There are bigger things than football in this world, and Chris Snow's profound legacy is certainly one of them.
My apologies, but don't feel OK engaging further in a game right now. Hug your people.
#Snowystrong
I feel absolutely awful for the players who were told they were all-stars this morning, only to be told they were not this afternoon.
This is embarrassing for the league, of course, but there's a human side here that just freaking sucks.
@DannyAustin_9
So many problems in the world and you (
@DannyAustin_9
) focus on
#privileged
athletes!
How many people slept on the streets of
#Toronto
last night?
How many slept in shelters?
How many visited a
#foodbank
?
Seems your priorities need to be readjusted.
I’m staying out of the CFL CBA talks bc I’m not reporting on it and haven’t done the work to understand it properly
It’s idiotic that a deal didn’t get done, though. Stupid.
After what fans went through the last 2 years, it’s a slap in the face from leadership on both sides
Just spoke with Alex Singleton and he told me he definitely felt the love from CFL fans last night.
"My mom, the first thing she said was ‘Your sister says you’re trending on Canada Twitter.’ It’s just so cool to have all that support up there.”
Call it a dump if you want, but it was the last home game of the season tonight and this old barn is where I go to work every day.
And you know what? There’s not a single place I’d rather be and not a single job I’d rather do.
Thanks for following along, let’s do some playoffs
Even more than the day the CFL season got axed, missing today’s Labour Day Classic has me feeling low
Instead of wallowing, I just want to say how much I love covering this little league of ours and how grateful I am for all of you
Cherish Canadian football, guys, it's worth it
Dave Dickenson on whether he checks Twitter for updates on Nathan Rourke
“If he plays, he plays. Farhan pretty much tweets out whether he uses the bathroom.”
Rene Paredes’ grandmother was here in Ottawa from Peru and got to see him play for the first time ever tonight ... and he hit the game-winning field goal as time expired. Amazing
All jokes aside, it’s gotten to the point where it’s just super embarrassing for the CFL that they haven’t announced a Grey Cup halftime show.
When the ONLY conversation happening about your big event is how there’s no halftime show, you’ve messed it up.
I’ll be honest, in my five years covering a CFL team, this has been by far the worst season for the league.
Tough on-field product. A commissioner who disappeared. Brutal attendance.
Look at that playoff bracket, though ... this is about to be so crazy fun.
This is so embarrassingly out-of-touch with the financial realities most Canadians have faced in the last year.
Rod doesn’t get to tell you that you’re not a real fan if you made a financial decision to look after yourself and your family instead of the CFL’s rich owners
CFL VIDEO: RP doubles down on his Grey Cup Fan Base comments. If you truly feared for the CFL’s future, you’d have bought spots in the fundraiser ⬇️ 🏆💵🏈
I honestly think if the Panthers beat the Oilers we gotta build Tkachuk a statue in Calgary.
Maybe it’s not downtown, maybe it’s out by Mount Royal or something, but we gotta do what’s right
I’ve got a sister who works in an emergency room and has two kids under four.
She’s given up more than you can imagine for COVID patients.
My other sister co-ordinates medical responses in countries where vaccinations aren’t possible
If you protest at hospitals tomorrow, eat shit
@nytimes
3. The Raptors haven't backed off one centimeter and Drake is said to be mounting his own recruiting campaign on top of whatever the freshly minted champions are doing to convince him to stay
I honestly find it astounding that Treliving pulled this off.
You have to consider how little bargaining power he had. Zero leverage. Had to get a deal done for Tkachuk. Everyone knew it.
Whatever else you want to say about the guy, he’s m-fing monster at trading stars.
This one was fun. My guy Michael Burns is 80-years-old and lives at the McKenzie Town Continuing Care Centre. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 but has recovered.
While he was sick, his favourite pub (
@kilt_caber
) opened to deliver him his favourite meal
@AshaRangappa_
For what it’s worth, I think it’s so rad that you were even able to stand up on those things. I’ve tried and failed, so way to kick ass out there (especially after 40 years, that’s awesome!)
Alright, I’ll say it and deal with the people who call me a homer
The Stampeders allowed 17 sacks, 12 less than any other team.
They ran the ball for 135.3 yards per game, 22 yards more than any other team.
The fact that NONE of their o-linemen are all-starts is criminal.
Tkachuk was also asked about what he'd do with the puck from his first career hat-trick
#Flames
"I don’t even know that I should be the one to have it, I should probably cut it in half and give it to Backs and Fro for the job they did tonight."
Feel like the full context of Mark Giordano's comments on the McDavid situation is required, so I'm just posting a screenshot below rather than picking parts of it to post.
I’ll be real with you: I don’t believe for a single second that the Argos would leave the CFL and join the XFL.
Like, let’s be real for one second, the XFL is gonna get fans in the stands in Toronto? Really? That’s how we’re gonna play this?
Come on
I'm from Toronto.
I make my living covering the CFL.
My biases are clear.
But if you had the chance to go to tonight's Argos game and you missed it, I think you're an idiot
What I love most about CFL fans is the way they react to news like Singleton and Michel getting waived.
99% of the response isn't "What might this mean for my favourite CFL team?"
It's feeling legitimately bad for both guys because fans up here wanted them to achieve their dreams
Today we hugged Chris for the last time and said goodbye as he went to give four people the gift of life by donating his kidneys, liver and lungs. We are deeply broken and deeply proud. In life and in death, Chris never stopped giving. We walk forward with his light guiding us.
Couple days off Twitter so I could move, but gotta take a second shoutout my mom.
She was named United for Literacy’s national volunteer of the year today.
Every Wednesday since I can remember, she’s taught English as a second language to adults in Toronto.
So proud of her!
My little tradition whenever the Stampeders play the Redblacks is to park about six blocks from the stadium and go to this little pond where my family used to take my grandmother when she had dementia.
I look for ducks, like we used to.
I love it.
Blake Coleman, on Jonathan Huberdeau not playing in the third.
"I don’t know if the camera caught it, but we scored that go-ahead goal, we get those blocks down the stretch and he’s celebrating and he’s excited for the team. Team guy through and through."
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the lobby bar at the Hotel Saskatchewan might make my favourite old-fashioned in the country.
Just a delight
I love covering this league, and I love getting to share my coverage with all of you and getting to chat about life, football and even Dr. Pepper.
Thanks for following along this season, it’s really, truly a privilege for me.
Only in Regina, man.
What a town, where you show up to cover the opposing CFL team and a Riders fan drops by with incredible home-baked cookies to welcome you to Saskatchewan.
My guy
@stadnek
is the best of us. Thanks buddy!!
Giordano said today that Brent Burns is a better offensive player than he is and that playing with Flames top-line on PP is main reason why he's anywhere near Burns in scoring race.
Asked Gaudreau about that. His response:
"Yeah, I think anyone would say he’s just being humble"
Also, shoutout to Edmonton for showing all the way up for this game.
I saw the “this game would be a bigger deal in Toronto” trash, and it was always nonsense.
Commonwealth looks so sick tonight. You showed the rest of the country how it’s done, Edmonton.
As a Toronto born-and-raised guy who cares about the Argos and wouldn’t mind covering them one day before I’m done, I’ve gotta say it’s warming my heart seeing them opening new sections and bringing in new fans for the East Final.
Wish I could be there. Make it special.
We’re in a golden age for Canadian athletes, but we need to grow ventures that allow them to make a living at home
Our athletes are world-class, so we need to treat domestic sport (CFL, CPL, USports, CEBL) seriously and create pro opportunities for all athletes. We can do it.
Also want to give a shoutout to
@CalgaryCoop
. When I got back yesterday and went into self-iso, I had no food and it was going to be a bit before friends could deliver.
They dropped off this incredible (free) care package to help get through the short period where I needed help
#Flames
head coach Bill Peters, on Tyson Barrie
"Yesterday I showed a bunch of clips to our coaches of Barrie ... jumping by us, creating 3-on-2s, 4-on-3s and they go ‘You showed me that one (already)’ and I go ‘No, that’s a different one.’ There’s too many examples of it"
We have the best national parks system in the world, and it’s pretty amazing that right now, only Canadians have access.
After five days hiking/camping in essentially empty Jasper/Banff, I can’t stress this enough: Get out to our parks and take advantage this summer.
As far as CFL outrage goes, it’s nice to be moving past the 4-down debate and get back to the familiar feeling of everyone being mad about terrible Power Rankings
