You may say ‘keep out of our affairs’ but one thing is for sure after this week’s US pronouncements, #SouthAfrica’s internal (and external) policies are under intense scrutiny & have unleashed a fierce - but possibly destabilising - internal debate too.

#SouthAfrica requires a cross-sector crisis management team to tackle the fallout from Washington’s approach. It’s not the time for ideologies or those seeking political gain but rather a sane strategy requiring a considered approach from the ANC. Can they rise to the occasion?

The US focus on #SouthAfrica provides the ANC with a domestic political conundrum. Aggressive criticism of Washington will only exacerbate diplomatic & economic tensions but can win votes from aggrieved voters whose nationalistic pride can be re-awakened.

The US spotlight on #SouthAfrica is another awkward moment for the DA and FF+ in the GNU as they grapple with both the ANC’s domestic & foreign policy leads and may have to defend them in the wake of pressure from Washington.

Washington’s spotlight on #SouthAfrica presents a political dilemma. Either Pretoria softens her tone or digs in her heels. Either she seeks to keep the US on-board or she drifts further to the US’s geo-political rivals. For the ANC, what wins them votes may be crucial.

#SONA2025 offers few solutions to alleviate the 40% of learners who drop-out of school before Matric or the 50% plus young South Africans out of work. Not to mention the severe municipal decline of Johannesburg and other centers. The basics remain the basics.

#SONA2025 occurs a crucial year for #SouthAfrica. Since a GNU provides some efficiences and constitutional protections, this year has to be exceptional to enhance & cement the GNU ahead of divisive local elections & ANC leadership change. Piecemeal success will not be enough.

#SONA2025 doesn't push the policy envelope any further. Its rhetoric sounds impressive but the track-record of failed implmentation and state incapacity looms large. Perhaps the GNU partners can hold the President to account for his promises since his own Party barely did.

Once again #SONA2025 itemises a long policy wish-list, expansive performance promises & dramatic expenditure proposals. The reality check will come in the 2025 Budget which will limit the ability of the State to complte this.

Although speaking as GNU President, the #SONA2025 sentiment & content could well have been delivered without a GNU in operation. While it presents a moderate and business-friendly approach, it ideologically re-commits to BELA and NHI & allows the ANC to pursue its key agenda.

There are 4 big backdrops to #SouthAfrica Pres Ramaphosa's #SONA2025 tonight. Cementing a somewhat fragile GNU: managing internal ANC cohesion; articulating & balancing the policy wishlist with prevailing harsh economic realities all with a more vigilant & vocal USA watching.

The issue may be valid today. But, expropriation without compensation can become a reality in a post- DA/ANC GNU when a more radical & unrestrained political leadership test the protections offered by our Constitution. The DA may assure the now - but the future remains uncertain.

As #SouthAfrica approaches a critical month of a State of the Nation Address & Budget, the resumption of loadshedding amidst the continuation of poor municipal management alongside low growth, accountability concerns & policy confusion shows how uncertain the recovery really is.

SouthAfrica’s GNU is on shaky ground. Rising anti-DA sentiment within the ANC Alliance alongside party succession battles and the need to shore up a more radical agenda pre-2026 local elections may make GNU reconciliation unachievable.

#SouthAfrica GNU on shaky ground as Opposition DA dispute declaration unlikly to convince the ANC to drop ideologically-based legislation historically aligned with ANC policy. But, the ANC needs to decide - GNU with or without the DA. And that's in dispute within the ANC itself.

With internal ANC divisions over its future leadership, party cohesion & role of the DA in the GNU, the ANC has been able to set an agenda largely playing internal politics (ideology) while using the DA for external (economic) gain. Its a clash that will be tough to amerlorate.

Despite the GNU, there is little cheer for the ZAR Currency in early 2025. Dollar strength and continued domestic policy uncertainty weigh heavily on the domestic currency which threatens to undermine the fight against inflation.
