Historian of speech l PhD Candidate at Cambridge University l Advisor to Interparliamentary Taskforce on Human Trafficking l Co-Convenor
@18thcentury_cam
Tonight, I accepted an offer from Cambridge University to endeavour a PhD in History, examining William Wilberforce’s art of public speaking in his speeches against the slave trade.
I hope this will help me continue to learn how to speak about abuse.

will close doors to speaking opportunities for me, but the church's refusal to listen to her, closes that same door on many women and renders the church less safe from abuse. Please read her 2018 "Letter to My Brothers,"

To everyone wondering if it's only down on your end, you are not alone.
In 2020, as I reoriented myself from supporting my boss, Ravi Zacharias, to standing with his victims, I read these tremendous books. It’s urgent we recognize abuse and become victim-centred. Please Like, Bookmark, and Retweet this thread 🧵 to help equip and inform many others.
"I’m asking that you would simply have no tolerance for misogyny and dismissiveness toward women in your spheres of influence. I’m asking for your deliberate and clearly conveyed influence toward the imitation of Christ in His attitude and actions toward women." -
@BethMooreLPM
“Why would
@RZIMhq
commission an investigation into
@RaviZacharias
' sexual abuse if he's already passed away?”
The answer is simple: Ravi is no longer here, but his victims are. They are alive and have been forced to live with the pain he caused. They deserve answers.
Growing up evangelical means reading Harry Potter for the first time as a 32 year old.
For those wondering, I’m still an evangelical & not becoming a wizard
I recognize this tweet will be disappointing to various friends for opposite reasons
I trust we can still be friends ❤️

Haunted this morning after a sleepless night with the details of

Blessed are the whistleblowers, for they can sleep well at night.
Blessed are those who refuse NDAs, for they can tell their stories.
Blessed are those who are passed over for promotion because they aren’t yes-men, for they are spared from being part of a toxic inner circle.
When a well-meaning pastor says, "There but for the Grace of God I go," I think many hear: "My pastor would do creepy things if not for cosmic intervention." A stronger message would be: "What that abuser did is categorically revolting and never to be normalized.”

Forgiveness is at the heart of Christianity, but poor preaching lets abusers gain and maintain access to victims. Forgiveness doesn’t require reconciliation or the restoration of trust. You can forgive and press charges. You can forgive and maintain a restraining order.

Bill Hybels has been one of the most influential global voices on leadership. An independent investigation confirmed as credible evidence he abused women. We need to identify what of our views on leadership were shaped by him & how it makes our contexts more vulnerable to abuse.
My wife was pregnant but we lost our baby in utero in a miscarriage. By God’s grace, walking through this painful loss brought Alexandra and I closer together, deepened our friendship and lead us into closer intimacy with God. We miss our baby but can declare that God is faithful
I understood my boss Ravi Zacharias was guilty of crimes only once I discussed

Flipping through the pages of eye-witness accounts of Jesus. Seeing how vulnerable women felt safe with him. The homeless felt at home with him. He never uses anyone. The more I get to know him, the more I see his gentle heart. His lives consistent with his message. He is safe.

When our fave speakers, pastors, or study-Bible authors are found to be abusive, it’s tempting to be more angry that the individual let us down than horrified by what the victim experienced. But we need to centre our heartache on the victim rather than on the abuser.

Eye-witness testimony of marginalized women about a man who can not be interviewed are at the heart of our case for the resurrection of Jesus. If such testimony is credible, I am compelled to believe the spa allegations against
@RaviZacharias
Churches uncomfortable being trauma-informed, survivor-led, and welcoming to the marginalized will have trouble being formed by Jesus, led by Jesus, and welcoming to Jesus. He is a victim of horrific trauma, a survivor of clergy abuse, and profoundly marginalized.
An incredible brave woman showed us that wholesomeness can overcome a predator - even when that predator had a global team (including me) a multi-million $ budget & a world class reputation. Thank you

Connecting the refrain “it could’ve been me” with the abuser rather than with the victim is a massive red flag to the vulnerable and a profoundly unhealthy outlook on the part of those with power.
Absolutely captivated by C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength. A brilliant blend of fairy tale and philosophy, exploring power and theology. I'd love to discuss this book with anyone who's read it! I'm shook.

As the Nazis closed in on Budapest, a Swiss diplomat realized the potential of paperwork. He voluntarily walked with those forced to the death march to concentration camps, furiously writing last-minute life-saving visas. In the end, Carl Lutz saved about 62,000 Jewish people.
The stress survivors experience when they see their perpetrator's name can be immense. I want survivors to be able to come to church or enter a book store with a sense of safety & wellbeing. Church & ministry should be a haven for the abused not of a vehicle for abuse (3/3).
Removing

Growing up my Dad,
