Was made some kinda level design director at Arkane Lyon (by accident?)
Dishonored Disho 2 DotO ''DEATHLOOP'' BLADE.

New pinned tweet time! I've designed levels and missions and entire campaigns of missions. Sometimes I make maps, sometimes flowcharts, sometimes weird colorful diagrams, sometimes I get on stage and say stuff! I love my work, and hope that it can bring joy.
things I'd like to see more of in games in 2024
- "it has been [time] since your last save" when quitting
- good gamepad support on PC-only games at launch
- an option to turn down or remove "ear ringing" effects
- cease-fire now free Palestine
Hi

💛☺️
My name is Dana Nightingale (she/her) and I'm Campaign Director at Arkane Lyon.
My best known work is level design of the Clockwork Mansion in Dishonored 2, and on the mysterious leads of "DEATHLOOP".
The first thing that I worked on at Arkane was The Flooded District, with Christophe Lefaure. Here's some of my early flow diagrams and paper maps, in no particular order. (Cont.)
In Dishonored the cigarettes are the same asset type as NPCs. You could probably copy and rename a file and see everyone smoking another person. (Yes, I've seen this. I probably have a video of it somewhere.)
Hi, I'm Dana. I've been designing games since I was a kid and professionally since I was 30. I came out 🏳️⚧️ at 40. I'm working at Arkane Lyon as campaign director.

The 10th thing I worked on at Arkane was The Bank Job for Death of the Outsider, and gosh did I have fun with this one. This was designed to be a smaller and more compact location, and focus on giving the player many many approaches. 1/12
Shout out to my local grocery store clerk who over four years has gone from "hello sir' to "do you have a brother who used to come here?" to "how do you do ma'am?" without me ever explaining a god damned thing to him.
SO THAT'S WHY THEY'RE CALLED IMMERISVE SIMS EVEN THOUGH THAT'S A TERRIBLE NAME AND NO ONE CAN DECIDE IF IT'S A GENRE OR A DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN BUT IT'S BETTER THAN SAYING DEUSEX-LIKES I GUESS BUT YOU KNOW THE REAL PROGENETOR OF THE GENRE WAS CALLED ULTIM
2015 and 16 were some of the darkest, bleakest, most oppressive and traumatic days of my life.
But being part of the development of Disho 2 set me on the trajectory I'm on today. It's one of the most important things I've done.
Happy 7 clockwork mansion.
#DEATHLOOP
is out today! 😊
I was the principal designer of the game's murder puzzle (Campaign Designer) and did level design on Aleksis Dorsey's Mansion (along with
@Galiegor
).
If you're playing today, I'd love to know what you think of the game so far. ☺️ (DMs are open too.)
Well, gosh.
A ne'er-do-well used this picture of me to do a bog-standard transmisogyny which was not even the most offensive thing in the tweet, with the
#ThisIsWhataGameDevLooksLike
tag, and got ratio'd into oblivion.
Hi! Thank you.
Today marks 13 years at Arkane. ✨🍷✨
So here's me at the start of my games industry journey and today.
At around 19 I was a freelance web developer and made official sites for Irrational Games (System Shock 2, et al) Looking Glass (Flight Combat) and more.
The 9th thing I worked on at Arkane is the one you've probably been waiting for, and I'm here to talk about it just in time for
#Blocktober
; The Clockwork Mansion of Dishonored 2.
For that, we have to start with the prototypes. 1/19
That's not metaphorical. Modders can get away with nasty bullshit that would fail cert and cost millions of cash moneys and cause chaos for localization and they do not have to care. And I love that.
Nobody is mad about pronouns.
They're mad that a large corporation acknowledged that we exist.
That this corp considers acknowledging that we exist is more profitable than pandering to them.
Or maybe they're just really stupid idk.
Also it's my employer so that's cool.
I think I took this picture just in time for

I'm Dana, she/her 🏳️⚧️
I'm Campaign Director at Arkane Lyon, a Bethesda/Xbox studio. I work with level design, narrative, and UX.
I just finished a GDC talk and yes I'm as exhausted as I look
Oh no is this a 2021 happenings dump?
• I came out as transgender after being in the closet since 2009. ⚧️🏳️⚧️
• I paid off my student loans ($120,000 at their peak in 2010) 💸🦅
• I reinvented my wardrobe. 👗
• I was featured in both NoClip and GMTK. 🎥
(1/5)
This has been the wildest production of my life. Went from level design to the design of the whole campaign. Recovered from burnout. Came down with tinnitus. Worked from home. Came out. 🏳️⚧️ Revealed to the world that I exist. Paid off my student loans. Began public speaking. Gosh.
So if it's hard for a modder, it's probably a little unreasonable to go, oh gosh, why couldn't the devs do this? A billion reasons. All of the reasons. Technical and legal and ethical reasons. Give us a break please.
I just spent two and a half hours with
@gamemakerstk
talking about Dishonored 2's Clockwork Mansion for an upcoming episode. ☺️ Mark Brown is very good at asking questions that let me say smart-sounding things. 😅
I guess we're using
#TDOV2023
now? Neat.
Anyway this is a public service announcement to Gamers.
Dishonored 2's "Clockwork Mansion" was level designed by a trans woman. (i.e. me. Hi!)
That is all. 😌
I like to clarify so I will. I am not throwing shade at the publication or especially not the modder, who I want to send 💛💛💛💛s to.
I've been a pro dev for 13 years and a modder for 15 with some overlap. Modders can do shit that is LITERALLY impossible for devs to do.
In Dishonored, The Loyalists, both the Flare Launcher (pictured) and the entire rooftop Arc Pylon setup where 100% LD (me) kitbash and not reviewed nor validated by any member of the art team. (I'm sorry.)
More info in the alt text.
Now that Twitter is actually going to die you legally need to admit your game dev sins
I have hidden abstracted versions of Loss in older projects and you’ll NEVER find them.
Thief II, Special Thanks: name was misspelled.
Feeling: Ugh. Damn. Fuck Dead Names though so who cares.
Arx Fatalis, Special Thanks: dead name spelled correctly.
Feeling: Arkane, you haven't heard the last of me!
"DEATHLOOP": As Dana Nightingale
Feeling: -bliss-
Two years ago today I came out as transgender at work and on online, so I recorded a very unpolished message about that. ☺️🏳️⚧️
Happy to answer questions about my journey so far.
I get a lot of credit for the Clockwork Mansion. Listen to this podcast to learn the names of dozens of other Dishonored 2 developers who also deserve credit.
#TransDayOfVisibility
My name is Dana
My pronouns are she/her
I figured out I was trans from 2009 to 2013
I came out Feb 1st 2021
I started HRT Nov 24th 2022
I haven't legally changed my name yet
I was born in the US and live in France
I make video games
I'm pretty happy
The fifth thing I worked on at Arkane never saw the light of day. It was a map for The Knife of Dunwall set at our vista landmark, the clocktower. Before I get into my diagrams, here's some history. (1/12)
Happy 25th anniversary to Thief: The Dark Project. I used to run a fan site for it so I have some historical artifacts in jpg form from the year prior to its release. I just thought some folks would find these neat.
And circling back to the original tweet, there's no such thing as "No ETA" in dev. Ohhh ah ha ha some may play coy and say there is, but no. There's not. You begin work, there's a deadline. Even if you haven't thought of it, there is. Because capitalism.
The sixth thing I worked on at Arkane was "Eminent Domain" for Dishonored's DLC, "The Knife of Dunwall". This is what we made instead of the very expensive Clocktower map. 1/14
So this guy is @-ing everyone he knows at Arkane to whine about stuff and I haven't muted him because I'm looking forward to having a good laugh about this later. Someone's going to do a dramatic reading.
It's definitely sunk in
And this feels just ridiculous to say
And I don't think if you don't understand that you should try to, but listen -
This is the first time in my entire life that I've actually felt self love
My body is finally on my side, not my enemy.
Folks, please, sending your CV/portfolio directly to me isn't skipping the recruitment queue. It's putting yourself in a different, worse queue which ends at the back of the main queue. Please just use the zenimax jobs site!
Or even better,
My hope is that "DEATHLOOP" is a little like Bloodborne. In that after playing it you can replay the other games by the same studio and appreciate them in a new way.
What's this? Level Design positions open at Arkane Lyon? You could join the LD team behind "DEATHLOOP"?
One thing you won't see on those listings is a number of shipped games / years experience. Come make your first game with us.
I just killed my first vampire in Redfall. 🥩🫀
Congrats on the launch to everyone who worked on it, in our sister-studio in Austin and around the world. 💛 I'm your biggest fan.
Un-hiding my account so if anyone from arkane austin wants to find me and connect it's a little easier
I also want to signal boost if you have a "looking for work" post
💗

Disappointed that I haven't yet seen such classics such as

And the quintessential

. I'm in this documentary quite a bit, talking about Flooded District and Clockwork. Feel free to AMA* about my rambles here! ☺️ But I'll get one answered to start. (1/3)
Our hour-long documentary on the design of the Dishonored franchise is now live.
Featuring insight into gameplay, level design, narrative, voice-acting, cut-content and so much more. Our sincere thanks to

What did I learn from every production?
I'll tell you.
Dishonored, Flooded District: Sometimes you have to make the hard decision to throw away months of work because it's best for the player
I can finally say what I've been working on for the past year. It's ...
#DEATHLOOP
! 😁
A free update is coming to everyone who already owns the game. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's reaction to the new content. 💛
When I joined Arkane... no, wait
When I first became a fan of Arkane!
The motto was, "say yes to the player".
I hope that with the Deathloop accessibly update we're making good on that promise.
And we'll keep saying yes.
Yes, you too.
Me: I want to finally try that new look I've been daydreaming about for years
Also me: but I'm deep into a months long depressive episode
Me as well: so do it depressed
"Dishonored isn’t just anti-cop. Dishonored despises anyone with any kind of authority whatsoever. Politicians, the military, religious leaders, aristocrats; “fuck em, they’re all the pricks” the game says before gleefully tasking you with burning it all down."
This is Rachel (must be said with a French accent)
Rachel is a one of a kind Dishonored whale plushie made for me by my uncle.
She'll eat the faces of transphobes while ushering in the devouring of our reality by The Void.
Inevitably.
Me trying to add context and disclaimers to that tweet as I see the numbers go up minute by minute oh no what have I done.
I adore modding and I miss it sometimes. It's wild and free and pure. Pro dev is real and demanding and my absolute labor of love. 💛
@Salman_Shh
In Dishonored 2's Clockwork Mansion you had to rescue Sokolov. He's in ragdoll mode, but "unconscious" so still has hit points and can still "die". I made him invulnerable to nearly every damage type to make having to carry him across the map more forgiving.
I can finally announce the thing I'm working on at GDC this year that I'm the most excited about. I Nick Fury'd up this little panel. 🥰
I'm very happy to introduce Torchbearers: New Generation Immersive Sim Developers
A place full of people I like a lot has roles available

In the Flooded District, in Dishonored, I wrote a note about a key in a foreman's office and put the key there. Afraid that players couldn't find it, I made a sign to help, in MS Paint.
In Microsoft Paint.
This isn't that sign. But it was in a release candidate.
Now that Twitter is actually going to die you legally need to admit your game dev sins
I have hidden abstracted versions of Loss in older projects and you’ll NEVER find them.
Happy TDoV to my transfolk siblings. 💗
Thought I'd round out the one day where our anti-perception buff expires to share a timeline that I think I made for new years but never shared. (+ a new March photo)
Without your existence and visibility I couldn't have done this.
Right now I'm going to get the results of the genetic research into my various cancer risks to (supposedly) unblock my transgender healthcare. (Why it's blocking it is another story.)
If the results are negative then I resume the usual trek.
But if it's positive:
