Why does Pittsburgh not understand that downtown is not the thing that's going to bring people back to the city?
Increased tourism is great and all but it's not consistent. Pittsburgh needs people. Pittsburgh needs housing for those people.
I think I already asked, but seriously, why are people saying Shapiro as VP?
I feel like that came out of nowhere. Buttigieg makes sense because of proximity, but Shapiro feels very out of left field.
A sincere "fuck you" to every politician that is JUST NOW saying anything about the death penalty, Marcellus Williams, human rights, civil rights, or anything in between or adjacent.
You have failed your constituents. Get the fuck out of office.
Just a reminder that the City of Pittsburgh's decision to ignore free speech and side with Israel directly harmed a member of the LGBTQ community.
So yes, what's happening in Palestine *is* a Pittsburgh issue.
We’ve reached the “it’s just a statue” part of vandalism.
You pro-Palestine protesters are the biggest group of losers on the planet. Bunch of kids who never got told “no” enough growing up and think vandalism is ok. Entitled losers. The real world will get you at some point.
If any of the cops felt bad about their role at Pitt's encampment, they could have just left. "I was just following orders" is not an excuse.
The fact they all continued to violently break up the encampment after multiple people were hurt is proof ACAB.
Why did we allow this? Also a better use of space would have been putting open space (CAR FREE) between these and the Terminal. But nope, fill it with parking. That'll show em.
Admin has staff that gets upset they have to pay and harasses one of the best things to come out of the city - Silence.
Admin has staff that signs a petition - Staff member forced out and criticized by almost every local elected.
What the hell is going on down on Grant St.?
The mayor (
@gainey_ed
) asked for free tickets twice. We made him & his staff pay to get their publicity shot. Afterwards, we were publicly attacked by a member of his entourage for doing so.
Sir, why should we handle this bullying privately? Why haven't you addressed them?
I think leaving and coming back to Pittsburgh or not being from Pittsburgh (like me) and coming to it is a quick way to realize exactly this.
I love Pittsburgh but the city desperately needs to give new people a chance. Moving the same people from org to org is why people leave
Weird how far-right protest is always directed at people and far-left protest is directed at systems and property but politicans only get upset at one form.
Isn't it weird how Pittsburgh spends millions inviting tourists and tech companies with incentives and yet there's still a housing crisis?
It's almost like those things don't actually do anything for current residents*.
*See people leaving the city by the thousands
I'm sorry, but if you equate wearing a keffiyeh with committing hate crimes, you're the problem.
We probably don't vote for the same definition of blue 🤷♂️
Here we go again. Not all development is good development.
There is zero personality to this neighborhood.
It doesn't matter to me that "there was nothing there before". What's there now looks horrible and doesn't encourage community.
@JDCocchiarella
Trying to get this message through to my older brother! He's part of the group that hates both sides and doesn't see a point in voting. Keep telling him to pick a side he hates less and vote for them. If he hates TFG (he does), I told him not voting helps TFG/the GQP win.
Jesus. Apparently if you mention KDKA, it really pisses off a select bunch of people.
To any new followers, I appreciate the follows/likes.
To the angry KDKA folx, stay mad. I appreciate whatever you've said after I blocked you. Any bit for the algorithm helps!
If you're a housing advocate and part of your advocacy includes blaming communities for not wanting to be displaced after that community has been historically displaced, you're the problem.
@eligit
And when the colleges deny the booking requests? (Because they absolutely would) Is there a "protest zone" appeal board (that would be facilitated by the college)? Think this through.
If only the trustees of
@PittTweet
(like the Mayor and County Exec) would speak up and protect their students from police violence. That'd be pretty cool.
New: Gov. Josh Shapiro won't make any endorsement in the statewide treasurer's race, the latest blow to Erin McClelland's campaign to unseat incumbent Republican Treasurer Stacy Garrity.
Not posting the address list because I'm not an asshole like Marty, but

Highly recommend getting a 2nd person to help hold the door while you screw everything back in, otherwise it's real a PITA (source: having a good-for-nothing roommate and having to do this solo).
Honestly, I don't get the appeal of the RNC or DNC. It's just a giant room of everyone patting themselves on the back for doing the bare minimum for 20+ years while the rest of us in the real world struggle. I deal with that enough with the foundations in Pittsburgh 🤷♂️
@SxarletRed
I forget who said it in the original post's replies (sorry if you see this) but essentially, this approach doesn't solve anything, it just lowers the bar for what's acceptable to house people.
In all seriousness, why is Shapiro the solution? Did he not just support a bill to financially punish universities that support divesting or actually divest from Israel?
People care more about roads, buildings, and grass than they do about stopping genocide and war.
If this is you, stop and think about why the protesters are there. If you're not sure of why, please ask. They're not the ones armed in riot gear.
@JanePitt
I've always considered everything within the pink border the East End. I refer to the communities outside the pink by their names, the exception being Squirrel Hill North and South is just "Squirrel Hill".
@CBHeresy
Hi Frank, one of her white followers here. So are you going to show up or are you just going to focus on making yourself the victim of "reverse racism" (which doesn't exist) now that you got called out?
Just your reminder that people are more important than property.
Windows, doors, flags, etc. - they can all be easily replaced.
If you don't understand this, you're probably on the wrong side of history right now 🤷🏼♂️
Pittsburgh funders are really out here giving each other $50k grants just to gather information from the community to inform their grant process, but will question nonprofits trying to start or maintain a program and think a $15k request has too much overhead.
"Progressive"
#foundations
- this is on you. You are too afraid to be political when you have the power and space to be. If your donors don't like the move, remove them immediately. We are all sick of your donor pandering.

Just remember, when foundations spend hundreds of millions investing in a green entrepreneur hub in a community that didn't ask for it and robots that ensure future DoD contracts for places like CMU and Pitt, that money could have gone to things like building and repairing homes.

Imagine having to place black fencing and other barriers along most of Fifth to protect people instead of doing anything to prevent cars driving recklessly through a 4-lane stroad through campus.
@OrganizerMemes
The problem is they're technically allowed to do what they're doing. Even if it's petty, they've likely retained decent attorneys to protect themselves. My concern is this backfiring harshly on the legitimate non-government takeover 501c3s doing things like voter education.
@davonmagwood
I don't understand how it always comes back to this. Is this just a waiting game at this point for our white parents to kick it? Like tf.
Wrote my senior thesis on this and concluded Germany, by every existing standard at the time, committed war crimes and should have been held accountable (which would have impacted history in a dozen ways).
My friends thought I was crazy for even being interested in the topic😳
All the tactics Germany used during the holocaust: concentration camps, starvation etc., were tested, practiced and refined first in Namibia. Germany only apologised to Namibia in 2021… and yet to page reparations.
So yes, she is right.
So if a cop destroys your property while you're protesting, can you sue them personally as well as the department?
Asking for a couple hundred friends in Pittsburgh.
Okay Pittsburgh, where can I buy a printed block/lot map for specific neighborhoods? I've contacted City Planning a handful of times but they never follow up.
We believe that all people who choose to live in Pittsburgh deserve to call the city their home. There's no requirement that you were born here, have lived here for your whole life, or have been here for a certain amount of time. Pittsburgh is for everyone.
@davidvatz
I'm just saying, if the whole thing was undeveloped, they could have done better. Focusing on existing residents instead of purely tourists and temporary tech employees. Not all development is good development.
@PippengerHarlo
Looks like "filtering" has already been rebranded as "vacancy chains" because everyone with a brain and any real estate experience rightly called it out for being Reaganomics. 🤦♂️
@DanRShafer
Honored to be a liberal infiltrator in Brookfield. Imagine thinking more housing, more diversity, and infrastructure projects is an "infection" to your neighborhood.
