SIGNED! Aotearoa New Zealand and the UK have signed a historic free trade agreement 🇳🇿🤝🇬🇧.
@annietrev
. This will bring benefits for all New Zealanders; exporters, Māori, SMEs, the environment & more. Very special to be a part of this historic moment. ➡️
NZ’s world-first effort to eradicate M.bovis has made significant progress. 3 years to the day since it was detected in NZ there are now just 4 infected farms.
That’s something our farming community should be really proud of. I'm certainly very proud of them.

Despite what some might say, the Govt doesn't "hate" farmers and we're not interested in destroying rural communities. We're interested in improving freshwater quality, something farmers and urban Kiwis agree is necessary.

We’ve worked hard as a nation to build our reputation for ethical high-quality animal protein and fibre. Consumers are becoming ever more discerning. This decision will help protect our reputation into the future.
Honour to meet with Ukraine’s Ambassador to the WTO in Geneva and convey NZ’s support and solidarity directly. Russia’s illegal, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is a form of aggression at direct odds with the core values NZers hold dear 🇳🇿🇺🇦
Big step. The NZ-UK FTA Act was passed in the House today. Great to celebrate with British High Commissioner Iona Thomas, as both countries steer toward ratifying this important deal. 🇬🇧🤝 🇳🇿
I want to extend my thanks and congrats to the Southland farming community for reaching a landmark zero cases of M.bovis. Southland was really hard hit and they’ve done the hard yards to get to this point. Full credit to them.

Today was special on farm as I announced that the Government’s programme to wipe out pea weevil has achieved a world first, with the successful eradication of the pest from Wairarapa.
This goes to show what can be achieved when Government, industry and communities work together.

This Govt has committed $100m to control wilding pines and provide hundreds of jobs for people most affected by COVID-19.This funding is a game changer in our fight against a pest that is a $4.6b threat to our economy, while providing up to 600 jobs.

I’m establishing a taskforce to respond to the animal welfare issues associated with winter grazing. Images of cows up to their knees in mud is unacceptable to me and I’ve heard loud and clear from the public that it’s unacceptable to them too. Time for action and consequences

Sauv is the variety that woke the world up to

Join me in raising a glass.
Today we announced that one way quarantine free travel to New Zealand for RSE workers from Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu is on the horizon. We are now working with these Pacific neighbours and the horticulture industry with the aim to bring staff in from September. Great progress.
Today was a big day for agriculture. The Government and primary sector leaders have agreed to a world-first partnership to reduce emissions. We will join forces to develop practical and cost effective ways to measure and price emissions at the farm level by 2025.

Essential businesses, and those that support them, will continue to provide the necessities of life for everyone in NZ. Primary industries, including food and beverage production and processing, are deemed an essential service.

There is no shortage of demand. The world wants our high quality product. We now need a skilled workforce to help us seize the opportunities before us.
The Govt is working with the primary sector to help ensure workers get to the places they are needed.

The Govt is supporting exporters to meet the new challenges they're facing. Our farmers and growers are rising to it with overall goods exports 2% higher in March 2020 than in March 19. Dairy exports were up 7%, meat 10% and seafood 7%. They're feeding us, and feeding the world.
Trade can help economy rebound, rebuild and recover.
