Alright, I give up. Apparently it's not possible for me to recreate this look in #GodotEngine right now. So my 3D projects are shelved. Basically, I need to add all the lights together and toon ramp them afterwards. So I'll be rooting for shader related feature proposals.

Trying something new in #godotengine . Cel-shaded sprites on smooth shaded backgrounds with painted textures. Not much of a scene for an art test I know. I'm trying out various things here. I'd like to have a viable workflow for every aspect of the project before going forward.

I've put together the basic structure of the character sprites. Head, torso and legs are separate pieces mainly to be economical with frames. For most animations arms will be seperate too. A couple of #godotengine quirks to overcome but mostly smooth work. #screenshotsaturday

More art tests for my weekend project. There is something to be said for the less-is-more approach for toon shading when combined with painted/non-toon backgrounds. I might redo the shading on the hands to match the simplicity of the characters if need be. #screenshotsaturday

This is something I thought about briefly with the visual style of this project. I don't want to ever blur the toon elements so I'll stick with a big silhouette of gun in your face for ADS. I figure I may have some creative leeway with drawn sprites over realistic models too.

@DamianSchloter Oh, additionally, depth of field is a HUGE contributor to the clearing of your view. When looking through aperture iron sights, the aperture widens as you focus on the front post. When looking through a red dot or a scope, the housing blurs and clears your view as well.

Animation import issues with #godotengine have me half tempted to go back to 2D sprites for my 3D project, like what I did in Slasher's Keep here. It's a stupid idea and I'm not going to do it but I'm already making plans for the implementation.

Knockback can now be passed on from one enemy to another. The main reason is to prevent you from getting stuck so easily when cornered. Nevertheless I spent most of my HP here trying to spike a zombie via an intermediate, which is also possible. #screenshotsunday #indiegame #pc

The player can take hits too now, with hit indicators and some general screen reddening, a combination of toon and gradient style with a faint brush stroke pattern, all in one big dumb shader. I'll probably make a more pronounced effect for low HP #screenshotsaturday #godotengine

Sort of a combat idle stance. This one is tricky as it has to work with different arm poses (pistols, rifles), and a jog cycle for the leg sprite. Head and right hand are also swappable. Nevertheless this project involves a stupid amount of drawing work. #screenshotsaturday

Here's a cool #godotengine trick I used for character shadows and blood decals: You can right-click>"Convert to ShaderMaterial" on a StandardMaterial3D, then pick parts you like for your own shader; In this case I used the proximity fade section and inverted it.
