The unfortunate thing is that most of us don’t get a choice. In practice, neighborhoods like the one on the left aren’t going away, which is fine. But most American cities have little to nothing that looks like the neighborhood on the right. We should at least get a choice

When I was at BuzzFeed News I pitched & wrote a story just to talk to Donald Shoup. I kind of didn’t think he’d talk to me. But not only did he talk, he was exceedingly gracious—and continued to be when I occasionally emailed him later. A brilliant guy, who was also a good guy

Farewell to our friend Donald Shoup, the guru who showed how parking can make and break a city. He was decades ahead of his time and we're still trying to catch up with him. The legacy of his life and his times will never expire.

I wrote about growing up in a community where people have lots of kids — and how family formation is pushed along both by incentives and social penalties.

I’m not sure people will ever choose to have more kids unless they see their choices leading very clearly to rewards on the one hand, or to obvious costs on the other. @Dalrymple

@rycrmml @FamStudies Yeah I though that disagreement was pretty interesting (and perhaps tonally counterproductive?).

@ancerj @FamStudies That's a really great point. Seems like we may get a case study in this at a high level with transportation spending now

@stevemouzon Real question: Why don't architects bring this back? People love beautiful buildings, but I could count the number of deco revival buildings I've seen in my life on my fingers.

lest you think guys don't face unrealistic body standards, there was just a bunch of articles about how Patrick Mahomes has a "dad bod." So like, the bare minimum to be kind of loveably schlubby is a literal NFL quarterback in his 20s.

@devinzander Haha. What is the logic there? Did some just go to LA once and like it?

2. That status can come from other sources. Eg Ive had church leaders w/ unremarkable jobs who are beloved/have high status in the community. The debate presumed that the managerial class ladder is the only one to climb, but it's not. Anyway some thoughts:
