We have a new monument at Dalry. “In memory of the many thousands who rest in this cemetery in unmarked graves.” Very many burials are in common ground with no markers. Of those in private lairs, many still have no markers. 🌿🪦🌳

Please do not clean gravestones like this!!! A hard (wire?) brush has put hundreds of scratches into the marble surface, which can’t be removed now. This gravestone is unfortunately ruined, just weeks after we found it. Cleaning must only ever be done with a soft, natural fibre

If you were to take the Dundee Terrace Footbridge to walk down Dundee Street to, for instance, the @AthleticArms / “Diggers” pub, an excellent example of a well-preserved late-Victorian saloon bar, you would find the pavement intolerably intruded upon by accumulated vegetation.

What has become clear over several years of working at Dalry & visiting other Victorian cemeteries is that most monuments were chosen from catalogues. Left is Dalry, right is Roslin. Unfortunately very few Victorian-era monument catalogues appear to have survived! 📖🪦🌳

These may not look like much, but they are the only immortelle flowers we have found at Dalry! Once common, immortelles were ceramic flowers on a marble base with a glass cloche or belljar over the top. The photo with intact immortelle is from Dalry around 1918. 🌼💐🌸

This mile marker is on the outside wall of the cemetery, along Dalry Road. It reads “Edinburgh 1 mile Glasgow 51 miles”. Edinburgh very likely means Tollcross, in this case. Today, Glasgow is 44 miles via the M8, so the mile marker technically needs updating. 🚙🛣️🌳
