Writer of all shapes n’ sizes, critic of all forms @newyorker @guardian @thenation @newrepublic @theatlantic @villagevoice @pitchfork he/him 🪡 very gay leftist

Joined March 2020
I had the chance to write about my rather niche sexuality on a large stage for @guardian and their Saturday Magazine. And, you know what? I took it.

For @pitchfork, I wrote about the brilliant 2023 record Bathhouse Blues by @_jakemuir, the undersung history of gay pornographic auteurs, the emotions of cruising, and some other steamy subject matter that can, yep, be evoked by whipsmart ambient music

One of my favorite rock bands is called Being Dead and I was glad to write about their wild second album for @pitchfork.

Great writing by @paranoiacs about a record that has obsessed and mystified me for most of my life. This piece makes it a bit clearer and more magical at once.

I ride the subway everyday, there's no violent crime, just a bunch of cops and men with assault rifles wearing fatigues who harass commuters and make everyone feel unsafe. The most dangerous, well-funded, and violent gang in New York is the NYPD. Stop-and-frisk redux.
The National Guard and 250 additional police officers will carry out random bag checks and help patrol New York City’s subway system amid a spike in high-profile crimes, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday.

So glad to have worked on the brand spanking new issue of @NOONAnnual. Another coiled edition of short fiction that pushes into novel emotional and syntactical terrain, and feels completely fresh more than 20 years (!) after it began. Plus, some astounding artwork.

So very thrilled to have been named a finalist for AICA's Irving Sandler Award for New Voices in Art Criticism by @AICA_USA. Huge congrats to the winner and to the other finalist—support art critics! It's tough out there, but sometimes you learn folks are paying attention ✨ 🧡

My husband @jeffweinstein has a sparkingly good essay in the new @thebafflermag about aging, promiscuity and how Medicare fails the sexual health of seniors. It's his grand return to writing for publication and also an undiscussed, necessary perspective

I wrote about Compassion, the terrific new album by @vijayiyer, @lmoh000 and Tyshawn Sorey, which resonates emotionally during a time when human rights are pervasively abused. ❤️ to @pitchfork for letting criticism, like music itself, be political

‼️Just finished this amazing novel about early 20th century Redondo Beach, CA, comprised of doctored newspaper clippings, by @APolitanoff. Ceaselessly beautiful, unaffectedly experimental, resonant today. What else can I say! Out now on @Dalkey_Archive

Thanks so much to @lithub and @danpjsheehan for publishing this piece about our work to publicize the astonishingly poor pay rates affecting book critics today. Spread the word about our campaign! Help make $1/word an industry standard, not a pipe dream.

Book critics—all critics—deserve to be far better compensated for their hard labor. Freelancers are drowning, truly, but they don't need to be. Join @FSP_NWU in fighting for better rates and working conditions for critics. $1/word must become a baseline industry standard.
"Low rates mean only rich people can afford to review books. What a bleak idea." —Erin Somers . Book critics are tired of being paid a pittance by outlets that undervalue and exploit their labor. Join FSP-NWU in calling for $1 a word as the new floor for rates!

". The most important culture publication of the 21st century. Pitchfork's painstakingly written reviews focused on music as art, not fashion." I am so sad that this piece had to be written, but @skornhaber gets at the momentous reality of the past day.
I worked at Pitchfork, and have many friends who worked there — it's too close for me to write objectively about. But @skornhaber wrote this piece filled with lines that are hitting a bit hard:

@octopus_grigori Not that this is a reflection of his reprehensible politics, but I maintain that Book of Numbers is one of the worst novels to ever receive such wide attention, legitimately not so much written as it was vomited onto the page. It has all the urgency of an NFT artwork. .

Me and @jeffweinstein , photograph by the ever-poignant Chris Buck, from our photoshoot with The Guardian Saturday Magazine earlier this year. Mr. Buck says this is his favorite photo of the more than 800 frames he shot, so I thought I'd share it with y'all.

New @Jensen_McRae record slaps so hard. What a lyricist—she uses couplets like Phoebe Bridgers, but builds worlds out of adolescent female experience that are very true and very much her own. Out Tuesday.
