Foundation models are stuck in the past, but they intentionally produce natural-sounding and varied responses. These can lead to hallucinations. We explore the limitations of foundation models and how RAG can address these so chat, search, and agentic workflows can all benefit.

It’s pretty heady to be shopping around homegoods and its chaos while listening to The Odyssey narrated by @DAMendelsohnNYC 😅

focusing on new translations of the Odyssey in an advanced English class in high school could be an exciting experience. one can imagine the discussions if several translations are read side by side--a revelation to young readers that the world "is" its interpretations; that

@JoyceCarolOates Homer is still common in the 9th grade, although an entire epic isn’t. When people remember “reading The Odyssey” in high school, especially if it’s 9th or 10th grade, it’s usually excerpts. The whole thing would take a full quarter and is too unwieldy.

“A proud man, he did not assent to committing suicide. He therefore armed himself with extreme will-power, closed himself off in his house, became his own vigilant guard, and transformed his Art into life.” – The Athenian poet Myrtiotissa recalls visiting Cavafy, 1924.

@vilem_vok @DAMendelsohnNYC Uno dei libri più belli degli ultimi anni. L’Odissea diventa qualcosa di primordiale e contemporaneo allo stesso tempo.

"The Iliad is simplex and pathos-driven, while the Odyssey is complex (for there is recognition throughout) and character-driven; and furthermore he has surpassed everyone in style and thought," Aristotle, Poetics 1459b15.

@CCavafy @DAMendelsohnNYC "...poems are sometimes referred to but not quoted, which means that it is essential to have an edition of the poems to hand – ideally Daniel Mendelsohn’s superb translation of the Complete Poems, which includes unfinished and ‘repudiated’ works."

C.P. Cavafy, who had a very high opinion of his own work, would no doubt be gratified to learn that he is now one of the most admired poets of the 20th century. This is all the more remarkable...
