For modern science it is more productive to embrace an essentialist notion of diagnosis than to entertain alternative understandings of suffering: Dx means causes to discover, correlations to establish, treatments to test, etc. The commercial factor is important, but secondary.

What's mental health science going to be about, after the dark biochemical age? Some ideas: Testing social interventions for mental health promotion and prevention; Designing harmless and effective placebo experiences. Little space for psychiatry, lots for social work, OT, etc.
Psychiatry professor Robert Howard says at Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress that depression drugs are no better than placebo in people with dementia but he uses the drugs as placebos because “people get better.” He ignores the drugs have serious harms!
