This combined with smudging baked normals is pretty much how you do it.
It's very important that you study how fur grows to get the technique right.
I'm not an artist but I have artist teammates so I've been trying to figure out the technique for getting this effect- I think I'm onto it?

How it started -> how it ended
I can never settle on a style. The first image was a test style based off of Fukari's artstyle, but eventually I started adjusting based on instinct. A huge part of me believes if I finished the first one it would have sold much better.

The problem with your challenge is it's a misdirection from the point we're trying to make. It doesn't actually disprove anything.
In the end, you still used a program to skip an entire 10 years of color theory, shading, etc. Digital art never did that. Too easy.
